What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: The Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Drive (model CFI-ZDD1) fits only supported PS5 slim and PS5 Pro model groups. Turn the console off and let it cool, remove its short feet and circular cover, click the drive into the two marked mounting holes, install the supplied cover and long feet, then reconnect the console. During first-time setup, the PS5 must be online so it can pair the drive with the console.
Which PS5 consoles support the add-on drive?
Check the model identifier before you buy or open the console. The words “Digital Edition” alone are not enough: Sony groups compatible consoles by their CFI model numbers. Sony’s support guidance limits the add-on to the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups, while the current product listing for the drive identifies the unit as CFI-ZDD1 and names the PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 slim, CFI-2100 and PS5 Pro families.

| Console family | Model group to verify | CFI-ZDD1 compatibility | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition slim | CFI-2000 | Supported | Confirm the CFI identifier on the console or its packaging. |
| PS5 Digital Edition slim | CFI-2100 | Supported in Sony’s product specification | Use the exact CFI-2100 identifier rather than relying on the retail name. |
| PS5 Pro | CFI-7000 family | Supported | Verify that the model belongs to the CFI-7000 Pro group. |
| Other PS5 model groups | Not identified by Sony as compatible for this add-on | Do not assume compatibility | Do not force the drive onto a console whose CFI group is not listed. |
The CFI-ZDD1 is a specific add-on, not a universal replacement for every PS5 optical-drive configuration. If your model number does not match a supported group, stop at the compatibility check and confirm with current PlayStation Support before purchasing.

Where to find the model number
Look for the CFI identifier printed on the console label or original packaging. Compare the complete model group, including the digits after “CFI-,” with Sony’s compatibility information. Keep the packaging available until you have completed installation and pairing in case you need to verify the model or return an incompatible purchase.

What the CFI-ZDD1 package contains
Sony’s product listing says the package includes the disc drive, a white drive cover, two plastic horizontal stand feet and a user manual. The replacement cover and feet are not optional decoration: the drive changes the console’s external profile, so install the supplied long feet and cover after the drive is attached.
Put the original short feet and circular cover somewhere safe before you begin. You need them if you later remove the drive and return the console to its original configuration.
Before installation: prepare the console and workspace
Installation is a physical procedure. A stable, flat surface and a soft cloth protect the console’s exterior while it is upside down.

- Use a flat work surface covered with a soft, clean cloth.
- Save the original short horizontal feet and circular cover before discarding any packaging.
- Have the supplied drive cover and long horizontal feet within reach.
- Plan to reconnect the console to a network before pairing; first-time pairing requires internet access.
- Do not work on the console while it is powered or warm.
Shut down completely, then wait
Open the PS5 Control Center, choose Power > Turn Off PS5, and wait for the console to finish shutting down. Unplug the AC cord and all other cables, including display, network and USB connections. Let the console cool before moving it. A rest mode session is not a substitute for turning the PS5 off and disconnecting it.
How to physically install the PS5 disc drive
- Place the console. Put the unplugged PS5 on the soft cloth and turn it bottom-up, with the front of the console facing you. This orientation matches Sony’s installation sequence.
- Remove the short horizontal feet. Take off the two short feet currently fitted to the console. Set them aside rather than throwing them away.
- Release the circular cover. Lift off the circle cover by releasing its clips. Work around the cover carefully instead of twisting or prying at one corner with a tool.
- Position the drive. Hold the CFI-ZDD1 over the exposed bay and align its clips with the two holes marked by upside-down triangle symbols. The markings identify the attachment points.
- Press until it clicks. Apply firm, even pressure so both clips engage. A click indicates that the drive has seated. If one side is raised or the clips do not engage, lift the drive away, realign it with both marked holes and try again; do not force a visibly misaligned unit.
- Install the supplied circle cover. Fit the white cover that came with the drive, align its clips and press until it clicks into place.
- Fit the long horizontal feet. Attach the two long feet supplied in the package. They replace the short feet removed in step two.
- Reconnect the console. Return the PS5 to its normal position, reconnect the AC cord and the other cables, and turn it on.
Keep the removed cover and short feet with the original packaging or another labeled container. They are required for a clean reversal of the installation.
How to connect the PS5 to the internet for pairing
Sony explicitly states: “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon set up.” The initial drive-to-console pairing therefore cannot be completed while the PS5 is offline.

- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Open Settings inside the Network menu.
- Choose Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select a Wi-Fi network or choose a wired LAN connection.
- Enter the network security details when prompted and complete the connection test.
- Return to the on-screen drive setup or pairing prompt and follow the instructions shown by the PS5.
A wired connection can be useful if Wi-Fi setup is unavailable at the installation location, but Sony’s requirement is an internet connection rather than a particular connection type. The support instructions establish the need for internet during setup; they do not promise that every future disc operation will be available without any network access.

Test the drive with supported media
Sony lists the CFI-ZDD1 for playback of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media. The instruction-manual information also identifies PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray and compatible PS4 Blu-ray game media. Use an intact, compatible disc for the first test.
| Media type | Support stated by Sony | Practical test |
|---|---|---|
| PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game disc | Listed in the instruction-manual information | Insert the disc and wait for the game tile to appear on the Games home screen. |
| Compatible PS4 Blu-ray game disc | Listed in the instruction-manual information | Insert the disc and allow the console to recognize and install the game. |
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movie | Listed on Sony’s product specification | Insert the movie disc and use the PS5’s media playback controls. |
| Blu-ray movie | Listed on Sony’s product specification | Insert a standard Blu-ray and check that the media player recognizes it. |
| DVD | Listed on Sony’s product specification | Insert a DVD and check playback in the media area. |
Sony’s getting-started guidance says a disc game installs automatically after insertion and then appears on Games home. Installation time, available storage and game updates vary by title; the drive’s role is to read the physical disc, not to eliminate those normal console requirements.

How to remove the drive later
Remove the drive only when the PS5 is off, unplugged and cool. Reversing the installation while the console is powered risks damage and can leave the console in an unsupported partially attached state.
- Open Control Center and select Power > Turn Off PS5.
- Unplug the AC cord and every other cable, then wait for the console to cool.
- Place the PS5 on a soft cloth, bottom-up with the front facing you.
- Remove the long horizontal feet.
- Release and remove the drive’s circular cover.
- Lift the drive using its concave section. Do not pull on the disc slot or use a sharp object to pry it up.
- Reinstall the original circle cover and the short horizontal feet.
- Reconnect the cables and power on the console.
Store the drive, its white cover and long feet together, and keep the original cover and short feet with them. If you reinstall the drive later, repeat the compatibility, cooling and network-pairing considerations rather than treating it as a hot-swappable part.
Troubleshooting checklist
The drive will not physically fit
- Stop and recheck the complete CFI model group. A console that is not in Sony’s supported CFI-2000/2100 slim or CFI-7000 Pro families may not accept this add-on.
- Confirm that the console is bottom-up and front-facing as specified. The clips must line up with the two holes marked by upside-down triangles.
- Make sure you removed the short feet and the original circular cover before attempting to seat the drive.
- Never use force to overcome a gap or uneven edge. Remove the drive, inspect the clip alignment and try again only when both sides are correctly positioned.
The console starts but pairing does not complete
- Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection and complete network setup.
- Check that the network test succeeds and that the PS5 is not merely connected to a local router without internet access.
- Power the console down, unplug it, let it cool, and verify that the drive clicked fully into both mounting holes.
- Restart setup after reconnecting the cables. If the prompt still fails, consult current PlayStation Support rather than repeatedly cycling the hardware.
A disc is not recognized
- Confirm that the disc is one of the supported formats: PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game media, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD.
- Inspect the disc for dirt or damage and try another known-good supported disc.
- Check that the drive cover is fully clipped and that the drive itself has not shifted.
- If multiple supported discs fail after a successful pairing, seek current PlayStation Support; the installation pages do not provide a complete hardware-failure tree.
You need to return or exchange the purchase
Keep the packaging and all removed parts until compatibility and pairing are confirmed. Retailer stock, regional pricing, return windows and warranty terms change by market, so verify those conditions with the seller in your region before purchase.
Buying decision: what matters for this drive
There is one official compatible drive model for this setup: Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1. The useful decision is not a comparison between several Sony add-on models; it is whether your console, network situation and media needs match the drive’s requirements.
Quick Recap
| Decision question | Why it matters | Answer to establish before buying |
|---|---|---|
| What is the console’s CFI group? | Compatibility is model-group specific. | It should be CFI-2000, CFI-2100 slim or CFI-7000 Pro as identified by Sony’s current specifications. |
| Can the console reach the internet during setup? | Pairing requires internet. | Have working Wi-Fi or wired LAN available at installation time. |
| Which discs do you need to use? | The drive supports specified optical formats. | Confirm that your game and movie collection falls within the listed PS5, PS4 Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD formats. |
| What will it cost locally? | Prices and availability vary by region and date. | Check the current regional listing and seller return terms; no universal price is established here. |
Frequently overlooked details
- Pairing is not optional setup trivia. The console needs internet for the initial drive pairing, even though the drive is physically attached.
- Keep both sets of feet. The long feet belong with the installed drive; the short feet belong with the drive-free console configuration.
- Use the supplied cover. The drive package includes a replacement circular cover designed for the changed hardware profile.
- Do not generalize from the “Digital Edition” name. Verify the CFI identifier, because Sony defines support by model group.
- Test with supported media. A disc outside the listed formats cannot establish whether a correctly installed drive is working.
