To run Windows PC games on an Android phone or tablet, use an Android Windows-compatibility layer such as Winlator, install it from the project’s official distribution channel, create a container, and then add an installer or game folder that you are authorized to use. The emulator does not supply game rights or game files. Success varies with the Android device, graphics drivers, emulator configuration and the individual game, so treat every title as a separate compatibility project rather than expecting a universal setup.
This guide covers the direction “Windows games on Android.” That is different from Google Play Games on PC, which runs supported Android games on a Windows computer.

First, identify which kind of emulation you need
The phrase “Android PC game emulation” can describe two opposite arrangements. Confirm the target before downloading anything.

What Winlator does—and what it does not do
Winlator is an Android app that provides a Windows-oriented runtime for x86_64 applications. Its stack uses Wine together with Box86/Box64 translation components. In practical terms, it gives a Windows game executable an environment in which it may run; it is not a copy of Windows and it is not a game store.
Installing Winlator does not grant permission to download, copy, decrypt or modify a commercial game. The emulator and the game files are separate matters. A GameHub terms page, for example, states that the service does not supply copyrighted game files and places responsibility for obtaining software on the user. Licenses and local law differ, and buying a game does not automatically answer every question about extraction, backup, transfer or modification.
Before installation: check the practical prerequisites
Use a device you can manage
You need an Android phone or tablet with enough free storage for the emulator, the installer and the installed game. The sources available for this guide do not establish a universal minimum RAM, processor, GPU, Android version or storage figure. Do not treat an online “minimum specification” list as a guarantee unless it is tied to your exact device and game.

Prepare an authorized game source
Use an installer, backup or transfer method supplied or permitted by the publisher or storefront that licensed your copy. A Windows installer commonly contains a file such as setup.exe; a DRM-free game may instead arrive as an already installed folder. The correct method depends on the title’s license and distribution system.
- Do use files you obtained through a channel that permits your use of them.
- Do not use ROM or ISO sites, cracked executables, unauthorized repacks or “preinstalled games” downloads.
- Do not assume that an executable copied from another computer is transferable under every license.
- Keep the original installer or backup unchanged so you can retry after changing container settings.
Install Winlator from an official source
App versions and installation screens change. Start at the current official Winlator project page and follow its release-specific instructions rather than relying on a mirror, an old video or a repackaged APK. Verify that the page you use is the project’s own distribution channel before downloading.
Allow an outside-Play-Store install narrowly
Android blocks apps installed from outside Google Play until you opt in. On Android 8.0 and later, the permission is assigned to a particular source app, such as the browser or file manager that opens the APK. The labels vary slightly by manufacturer, but the process is generally:

- Download the APK only from the official Winlator distribution channel.
- Open Settings and search for Install unknown apps or Install other apps.
- Select the specific browser or file manager you used to open the APK.
- Turn on Allow from this source, install the APK, then return to the same screen and turn the allowance off if you do not need it again.
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled. A Play Protect verdict can reduce risk, but a clean result is not a guarantee that every APK or download is safe.
Never disable Android security protections merely to install a file from an unofficial mirror. If an APK asks for permissions that do not make sense for an emulator, stop and recheck the source.
Create your first container
Winlator uses containers to hold the Windows-like environment and its settings. A container is where you select graphics and compatibility options and where the game’s virtual drives are exposed. Names and defaults can change between releases, so use the labels shown by your installed version.
- Launch Winlator and open its container-management screen.
- Choose the command to create a new container.
- Give the container a descriptive name, such as the game title or “test,” so you can keep separate configurations.
- Review the available screen, graphics and input options. Start with the defaults unless the project’s current instructions or a game-specific guide calls for a change.
- Save the container and start it once. This first launch lets Winlator create its virtual drive structure.
Separate containers are useful when two games need different settings. They also make troubleshooting easier: you can change one container without unintentionally altering another.
Transfer and install a game legally
The exact file workflow depends on the Winlator release and the game. A third-party Winlator how-to article published on February 8, 2025 illustrates a common pattern: transfer the installer or game folder to the Android device, open the container’s drive view, run the setup executable, and create a shortcut. Treat that as a general workflow, not a universal recipe or official guarantee.
Option A: run an installer
- Copy the authorized installer to storage that Winlator can access. Keep the path simple and use a folder you can identify, such as a dedicated game-transfer directory.
- Open the target container and its drive or file-browser view.
- Navigate to the transferred installer and select the Windows setup executable, commonly
setup.exe. - Follow the installer’s prompts. Choose an installation directory inside the container’s virtual Windows drive unless the game’s documentation specifies another location.
- When installation finishes, locate the game’s main executable in the virtual drive.
- Use Winlator’s shortcut option, if available, to add a launcher entry. Give it the exact game name and select the executable you just installed.
- Close the container cleanly, then launch the shortcut from Winlator’s main screen.
Option B: use an already installed folder
- Transfer the complete folder using a method allowed by the game’s license.
- Place it where the container can see it through its drive mapping or file view.
- Open the folder and identify the game’s actual executable rather than a desktop shortcut copied from Windows.
- Create a Winlator shortcut if the release offers that function, then launch the executable from the container.
If the installer requires an online account, a launcher or a separate runtime, follow the publisher’s instructions. An emulator can provide a Windows-compatible environment, but it cannot bypass account checks, licensing servers, anti-cheat systems or other game-specific requirements.
Configure controls for a phone or tablet
Winlator lists support for gamepads and keyboard-and-mouse combinations. A controller is optional; the available sources do not identify or test a particular controller model or establish compatibility with every Android device.
Touch controls
Use the on-screen controls supplied by your Winlator version for games that tolerate touch input. Strategy, simulation and older mouse-driven games may require careful mapping of taps, drags and right-click equivalents. If a title depends on many simultaneous keyboard keys, touch mapping can become impractical.

Gamepad
An Android-compatible gamepad can make action games easier to control. Pair it with Android first, then start the container so Winlator can detect the input device. If buttons are wrong, check the game’s own control menu and Winlator’s input mapping before changing graphics settings; input problems and rendering problems have different causes.
Keyboard and mouse
For games designed around keyboard shortcuts or precise pointer movement, a compatible Bluetooth or USB input combination may be more suitable than touch. Android port, pairing and permission behavior varies by device, so the absence of a particular accessory from a compatibility list is not proof that it will work or fail.
Launch safely and evaluate compatibility
Start with one game and one container. The first launch may take longer while caches or configuration files are created. Watch for whether the game reaches its menu, renders correctly, accepts input and remains stable during a short session.
No source establishes a universal compatibility percentage, a guaranteed game list, a benchmark or a minimum phone specification. Performance and stability depend on the Android hardware, graphics drivers, Winlator settings and the game’s engine. A game that starts may still suffer from missing effects, broken video playback, unstable frame pacing, crashes during loading or incompatibility with online services.
A useful first-run checklist
- Does the executable start without an immediate error?
- Are menus and 3D scenes rendered correctly?
- Can you control the game with touch, a gamepad or keyboard and mouse?
- Does audio play without stuttering or missing components?
- Can you save, quit and relaunch from the same container?
- Does the game require a launcher, account, network connection or anti-cheat component that may not function in this environment?
Record the container name and any setting you change. That makes it possible to undo a change instead of losing a working configuration.

Security and legal boundaries
Reduce APK risk without claiming certainty
Using the official project channel, checking the release information and limiting Android’s unknown-source permission to the app you actually use are sensible risk-reduction steps. Android’s Play Integrity documentation describes Play Protect verdicts, but neither Android documentation nor a scan result proves that every file from a particular website is safe. Keep the permission disabled when it is not needed and remove an APK you no longer trust.
Keep game ownership separate from file handling
Use only software you are legally entitled to use and a transfer method allowed by the applicable license and local law. The sources do not settle the legality of making a personal copy, extracting files from every storefront or modifying every executable in every jurisdiction. When a publisher’s terms prohibit a particular transfer or alteration, do not assume the emulator changes that rule.

Maintenance, updates and cleanup
When updating Winlator
Read the current project release notes before replacing an installed version. Keep copies of important save files and note which container belongs to each game. A new release can change defaults or compatibility behavior; preserving your game installer lets you rebuild a container if needed.
When removing a game
Delete the game through its own uninstaller when one is provided, then remove leftover files from the container only after confirming that saves are backed up. Do not delete a shared folder until you know no other container or game uses it.
When a game stops working
Undo the last setting change first. If that does not help, create a clean container and test the same authorized installer. A clean test separates a damaged configuration from a broader incompatibility without destroying the original container.

Can Winlator turn any Windows game into an Android game?
No. It provides a compatibility environment, not a guarantee. Some games start, some require extensive configuration, and others may not work because of their graphics path, launcher, DRM, anti-cheat or other Windows-specific dependencies.
Do I need a controller?
No. Winlator lists gamepad and keyboard/mouse support, but touch input may also be usable depending on the game and your mapping. A controller is an optional control choice, not a stated requirement.

Can I copy a game from my Windows PC after buying it?
