The reliable way to update a self-hosted V Rising server without surprising players is a controlled sequence: announce the restart through RCON, stop the server, run SteamCMD with AppID 1829350, then start the server again. Put that sequence in a script and schedule it during a low-activity period. Keep saves and durable configuration outside the update-prone installation files, and test the script manually before allowing unattended runs.

What the automation does
V Rising Dedicated Server files change as Stunlock Studios fixes bugs, improves performance and balance, and publishes new builds. Stunlock’s server instructions state that rerunning the SteamCMD download script while the server is offline verifies the installation and updates it to the latest files. SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line tool for downloading and updating standalone dedicated servers.

A safe maintenance run has five distinct phases:
- Send an in-game warning through RCON.
- Wait long enough for players to leave combat, dungeons, castles, or other dangerous situations.
- Stop the server cleanly and allow its process to exit.
- Update the offline installation with SteamCMD.
- Start the service and verify that it is accepting connections.
The schedule can be fixed (for example, every day at 09:00) or tied to an update-detection mechanism in a container. Either way, the warning must happen before the stop command, not after the server has already disappeared.
Choose an implementation

Windows is the clearest option when you already run the server as a Windows service. A container is useful when you want the image to detect an available Steam update and restart itself, but it still needs RCON enabled for a graceful shutdown and a persistent volume for saves.

Prerequisites on Windows
- A working V Rising Dedicated Server installation and a service or executable that you can stop and start.
- SteamCMD installed and reachable by the script, either through its full path or the system
PATH. - RCON enabled in the server configuration, with the correct host, port, and password.
- An RCON client such as
mcrconinstalled on the server host. - Permission for the account running the scheduled task to stop and start the service and to write to the SteamCMD installation.
- A persistent location for save data and durable settings, separate from files that SteamCMD can replace.
- A maintenance window that matches your players’ time zone and normal activity.
Do not put an RCON password directly in a script that is readable by every local user. Restrict permissions on the batch file and its directory, or use the credential-storage features available in your chosen RCON client and service-management setup.
Enable and test RCON before scheduling anything
RCON is the control channel that lets the script display a warning to connected players. The exact configuration-file location and option names depend on how the server was installed, so use the settings documented for your deployment. Confirm that RCON is enabled, note the listening port, and set a strong password.

- Start the server normally.
- From the server host, run your RCON client against the configured host and port.
- Send a harmless test command and confirm that the server accepts it.
- Send the restart announcement command and verify that connected players can see it in chat.
If a local test cannot connect, an unattended scheduled task will not be able to warn anyone. Check the host address, port, password, firewall rules, and whether the RCON listener is bound to the interface you are using. Test from the same Windows account that will run the task when possible.
The SteamCMD update command
The V Rising Dedicated Server Steam AppID is 1829350. With the server offline, the core update command is:
steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +app_update 1829350 validate +quitvalidate asks SteamCMD to check the installed files as it updates. SteamCMD may report that no files changed when the installation is already current. That is not an error; a controlled restart can still be useful when the host needs to load a build that is already present or when you are enforcing a regular maintenance window.

Use the full path to steamcmd.exe if the scheduled task has a different working directory or environment than your interactive command prompt. Keep the server process stopped for the entire update so files are not locked or changed while SteamCMD is verifying them.
Build the warning, stop, update, and start script
The following sequence follows the documented community example. Replace the paths, service name, RCON port, and password with values from your installation. The waits are examples, not universal requirements: measure how long your server actually takes to shut down and how long downloads take in your environment.

announcerestart 10 tells players that a restart is planned in 10 minutes. The example then waits 600 seconds, which is the same ten-minute interval. Use wording that gives the exact clock time as well as the countdown when your player base spans time zones. Tell players the expected downtime and remind them to leave combat, boss arenas, exposed castle areas, and other situations where a disconnect could cost progress.
2. Stop the service
nssm.exe stop vrisingserver is only an example of a service command. NSSM is not required for every installation. Substitute the command used by your service manager, or call the server’s own shutdown mechanism if that is how you operate it. The 60-second pause gives the process time to flush saves and exit; increase it if logs show a slower shutdown.
3. Update while offline
Run the SteamCMD command only after the server has stopped. Watch its output for login, download, validation, and completion messages. If the command fails, do not start the service blindly: preserve the error output, correct the cause, and decide whether to restore the previous installation or keep the server offline until the update succeeds.

4. Start and verify
The example waits five minutes after SteamCMD finishes before starting the service. That pause is conservative and may be unnecessary on a fast host; it can be shortened after observing several successful runs. Start the service, then check its process state and server log. Confirm that the server is visible to a test client and that RCON accepts a connection before considering maintenance complete.
Schedule the script with Windows Task Scheduler
- Save the script as
update.batin a directory whose permissions are restricted to administrators and the service account. - Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Task rather than relying on a basic shortcut.
- On General, give the task a descriptive name, select an account with permission to control the service and run SteamCMD, and enable Run whether user is logged on or not if the host is unattended.
- On Triggers, create a Daily trigger at a low-usage time. The installer example uses 09:00; choose a time that fits your community and specify the host’s intended time zone.
- On Actions, choose Start a program, browse to
update.bat, and set the Start in directory to the folder containing the script and any relative-path tools. - On Conditions and Settings, decide whether the task may wake the computer, whether it should retry after a failure, and whether a second run is blocked while the first is still active.
- Run the task manually from Task Scheduler and observe the complete warning, shutdown, update, and startup sequence before enabling the daily trigger.
Do not schedule the first unattended run until you have seen the service return online and checked the logs. There is no universal test duration: the useful test is one complete cycle on your own host.
Keep saves and settings safe during updates
SteamCMD updates the server installation. Files inside that tree can be replaced, removed, or changed when a new build is installed. Save data and durable configuration should therefore live in the persistent-data location intended by your server setup, not only in an update-prone runtime directory.
- Identify the save directory and copy it to a separate backup location before automating updates.
- Identify settings that must survive an update and keep the authoritative copies outside the installation tree.
- After an update, copy only the runtime settings your installation requires into the active directory; do not overwrite newly supplied files indiscriminately.
- After the restart, verify that the expected world, player progress, server name, rules, and access controls are present.
If settings appear to revert, the usual cause is that the service is reading a different path from the one you edited, or that an update replaced a file that was stored inside the installation. Correct the path and restore the intended settings from the persistent copy before the next scheduled run.
Container-based automatic updates
Didstopia’s V Rising container documentation describes an automatic-update mode that watches for a Steam update, restarts the server, and then triggers the update. In that model, configure the image’s documented update-mode variable, enable RCON so the container can issue shutdown commands, and mount the save-data directory as a persistent volume.

The operational checks are the same as on Windows: confirm that a warning is visible, that the container can stop the server cleanly, that SteamCMD completes, and that the container returns to a healthy running state. Inspect container logs after enabling the mode; an automatic restart without a persistent volume risks losing or hiding the data the server needs to load.
Design warnings players can act on
A useful warning is operational information, not merely a countdown. Send the first message early enough for players to finish an activity, then make the final interruption unambiguous. Include:

- How long the server is expected to be unavailable.
- A reminder to leave combat, dangerous territory, and activities that cannot be safely paused.
- Where players can check status if the restart takes longer than expected.
An official V Rising announcement described maintenance chat messages that told players to get to safety before a restart. Follow that principle even if your schedule is automated: players need enough notice to protect their characters, not just enough notice to read a technical message.

SteamCMD says there are no changes
The server may already have the latest files. Check the SteamCMD output for a successful login and completion, then perform the planned restart if your maintenance policy requires one. “No changes” does not prove that the service restarted successfully, so still verify the process and connection afterward.
The warning never appears
Run the RCON command interactively. Verify that RCON is enabled and that the host, port, and password in the script match the live server. Check firewall rules and confirm that the scheduled task runs under an account that can reach the RCON listener. Do not leave the task unattended until a manual warning is visible to a connected player.

The service does not stop cleanly
Read the service and server logs, then lengthen the shutdown wait. Confirm that the stop command targets the correct service name and that the task account has control permission. If a forced termination is the only option, treat it as a failure mode rather than the normal update path because it can interrupt saving.

Check SteamCMD’s exit output, the service manager’s status, and the server log. Verify that the scheduled task’s working directory and executable paths are correct. A five-minute post-update wait does not repair a failed download or a bad path; correct the underlying error, start the service manually, and confirm a client connection.
World or settings look wrong after startup
Stop the service before copying anything back. Compare the active paths with the persistent save and configuration locations, restore the intended files, and start the server again. Keep a dated backup before each maintenance run so you can recover from an accidental overwrite.
Pre-flight checklist for unattended updates
- RCON warning tested with a connected player.
- SteamCMD can log in and update AppID
1829350while the server is stopped. - Service stop and start commands work under the scheduled-task account.
- Shutdown and download waits match observed behavior on this host.
- Saves and durable settings are stored in a persistent location and backed up.
- Task Scheduler trigger uses the intended time zone and low-activity window.
- Logs are available for the batch file, SteamCMD, service manager, and server.
- A manual end-to-end run has returned the server online before daily automation is enabled.
What to remember
Use RCON to warn first, stop the server before SteamCMD runs, update AppID 1829350, and start only after the update completes. Schedule that sequence at a player-friendly time, keep data outside the replaceable installation tree, and validate the entire cycle manually. Containers can automate update detection, but they still require RCON and persistent storage for the same player-safe behavior.
