To add bots in Counter-Strike 2, send the server commands bot_add, bot_add_t, or bot_add_ct from the developer console. Use bot_quota to set the target population, choose bot_quota_mode fill to keep a chosen number of players in the match, and run bot_kick to remove bots. The commands must reach the server that is running the map, and a dedicated server requires server-level permissions.

What CS2 bot commands actually control
A CS2 bot is a computer-controlled player managed by the game server. The client console is only an input method: a command changes the match when it is sent to the server hosting your map and when your account has permission to issue server commands. Typing a command in a client connected to somebody else’s server will not give you control over that server.

There are two practical ways to run bots:
- Local practice or private session: you start the map and issue commands from your own developer console. This is the fastest way to test teams, quotas and difficulty.
- Dedicated server: you use the provider console, the server process console, RCON or another administrator interface. Put persistent convars in the instance’s configuration so they survive a restart.
Bot behavior also depends on the active map and game mode. A command can be valid yet produce no bot if the current mode disallows bots, the map has no usable navigation data, or the command was sent to a client rather than the server.
Before adding a bot
Enable the developer console
- Launch CS2 and open Settings.
- Find the option that enables the developer console and set it to Yes.
- Use the configured console key (commonly the tilde key, unless you changed it) to open the console in a match.
Start a practice/private session or connect to the dedicated server on which you want the bots. If the console does not open, check the key binding in the keyboard settings rather than repeatedly entering commands that are never sent.

Confirm that you are an administrator
On a local session that you created, you normally have the authority needed for bot convars. On a dedicated server, use the host’s server console, an authenticated RCON connection, or the provider’s administrative console. A normal player console cannot override a remote server’s settings.
Confirm the map and mode
Check the map name and the active mode before troubleshooting the bot count. Some modes or custom maps do not support the expected bot behavior, and missing navigation data can prevent a bot from spawning or moving. If you have just changed a configuration, change level or restart when the host requires a reload.

Enter one of these commands in the server console:

The team-specific forms also document optional type, difficulty and name arguments. A representative syntax is bot_add_ct <type> <difficulty> <name>. The accepted values and their order can change with the running build, so use the command’s built-in help on your server before supplying those arguments. If you only need a normal bot, omit the optional fields.
Check that the request worked
Watch the scoreboard and the server console after each command. A successful request should create a bot on the requested side if a slot is available and the mode permits it. If no player appears, do not immediately increase the quota; first verify that the command reached the server and that you selected the intended team.
Set the bot population with bot_quota
bot_quota is the server convar for the bot target. The current CS2OpenDev convar reference lists a default value of 10. That default is a server setting, not a promise that ten bots will always be visible: the active quota mode, available slots, human players and game rules can all change the resulting count.
Keep a fixed bot target
For a straightforward target, enter a number and use the normal quota behavior:

bot_quota_mode normalIn normal mode, the quota is treated as the target number of bots. The server may still be limited by the match’s maximum slots, team rules or a mode that does not permit bots. If you want to add exactly one bot for a short test, bot_add is more direct than changing a persistent quota.
Fill open places with bots
Use fill mode when you want the server to maintain a total player population as humans join and leave:
bot_quota 5
bot_quota_mode fillIn fill mode, the server adjusts the bots to keep N players in the game, where N is the value of bot_quota. Consequently, five does not mean five bots. If two humans are present, the server seeks a five-player match and may add three bots; if another human joins, it can remove or stop replacing a bot. This is why the apparent bot count changes during a session.
Maintain a human-to-bot ratio
Match mode interprets the quota as a one-to-N human-to-bot ratio:

bot_quota_mode matchWith this mode, the number of bots is tied to the number of human players rather than being a fixed total. As humans connect or disconnect, the server recalculates the bot population. Use it for a server that should scale practice opponents with its human population, not for a permanently fixed number of bots.
Change a quota that keeps replacing kicked bots
If you run bot_kick while fill or match mode is active, the server is designed to restore the configured population. To keep the match empty, lower the quota or switch to a mode and value that do not request replacements before kicking the bots.

Remove bots
To remove all bots currently in the match, run:
bot_kickThe documented command syntax also supports filters for team, bot type, difficulty and name. Use the command help on the running build to see the exact filter format, then apply the narrowest filter that matches your goal. For example, a team filter is safer than removing every bot when you are testing only one side.
Remember that removal is a current-match action. A persistent bot_quota setting can add bots again immediately or after the next level change, depending on the quota mode. Treat the quota configuration as the source of truth when you need the result to persist.
Local server versus dedicated server

Use a local session to validate the command sequence first. Move the same convars to a dedicated server only after confirming that the map and mode support the behavior you want.
Make bot settings persistent on a dedicated server
Place convars in the active configuration
Add the required settings to the configuration file that the running server instance actually loads. A minimal example is:
bot_quota 5
bot_quota_mode fillIf you prefer a fixed bot total, use normal instead of fill. Do not assume that a file with a familiar name is active: hosts can use different paths and startup profiles for different instances.

Load the settings after game-mode configuration
Game-mode configuration can override bot convars. Ensure your bot settings execute after the game-mode configuration, or issue them through the server console after the mode has loaded. This ordering is a common reason a value appears correct in a file but behaves differently in game.

Use the host’s reload procedure
Some hosts apply configuration changes only after a restart or level change. Follow the provider’s current documentation for its panel; panel labels and file paths differ. After reloading, reconnect and verify the active values in the server console rather than assuming the edit took effect.
Verify the correct instance
- Check that the map you are playing belongs to the server instance whose configuration you edited.
- Confirm that the command was executed with server permissions, not merely typed into an unprivileged client console.
- Inspect the startup profile or command line if several instances share the same machine.
- Record the selected mode and map so a later level change does not move you to a different configuration.
A reliable setup sequence for a dedicated server
- Start or restart the intended dedicated-server instance.
- Load the map and game mode in which bots should play.
- Open the provider console, server process console or authenticated RCON session.
- Set the mode first, then issue
bot_quotaandbot_quota_modeso later mode loading does not overwrite them. - Run
bot_add_torbot_add_ctfor a team-specific spot check. - Observe the scoreboard and server output. Confirm the number of humans and bots matches the meaning of the selected quota mode.
- Save the same convars in the persistent configuration and reload according to the host’s procedure.
- Reconnect or change level and repeat the check. A setting that works only until restart is not yet persistent.
Troubleshooting: diagnose the symptom
No bot appears after bot_add
- Wrong console: verify that you are hosting the local session or using a server-admin console. A remote client console cannot control an unrelated server.
- Team or slot problem: run
bot_add_torbot_add_ctand check whether the requested side has room. - Map or mode restriction: confirm the active map, game mode and bot support. Custom maps may lack navigation data required for bots.
- Stale configuration: change level or restart if the host applies settings only during a reload.
- Changed command behavior: use the current build’s command help and compare the spelling and syntax with the maintained CS2OpenDev reference.
Bots keep coming back after you kick them
Inspect bot_quota and bot_quota_mode. Fill mode is specifically designed to replenish bots until the requested player total is met, and match mode recalculates bots from the human count. Reduce the quota or change the mode before running bot_kick if you need the removal to remain in effect.
The number of bots is wrong
First identify what the quota means in the active mode. In normal mode it is the bot target; in fill mode it is the desired total number of players; in match mode it is the multiplier in a human-to-bot ratio. Human joins and leaves can therefore change the displayed bot count without any command being issued. Also check the match’s available slots and team limits.
Settings reset after a restart
Move the convars from a one-off console entry into the persistent configuration or startup mechanism for the active server instance. Confirm that the file is loaded after game-mode settings, then restart or change level and test again. If a hosting panel rewrites files, use its documented configuration field instead of editing a generated file that will be replaced.
The console reports an unknown command
Run the command’s help in the current CS2 build and check for spelling, underscores and argument order. Command behavior can change between builds, and a guide written for another version may show obsolete syntax. If the command is absent, verify that you are in CS2 rather than a different game executable or server environment.
Bots spawn but do not move
Check the map’s navigation data and whether the current mode supports bot navigation. A syntactically successful spawn does not guarantee usable paths. Test on a standard map known to support bots; if that works, the custom map or its navigation data is the likely cause.

Which setup should you choose?
Choose a local session when you need immediate practice and do not need settings to survive. Choose a dedicated server when other players must reconnect to the same bot rules or when the match should run independently of your game client. Use normal mode for a stable bot target, fill mode for a stable total player count, and match mode for a population that scales with humans. This choice matters more than the individual add command because it determines what happens when players join, leave or restart the server.
