You cannot set up supported co-op for any BioShock story campaign. The original BioShock and BioShock Infinite were released without multiplayer, while the original release of BioShock 2 had a separate competitive multiplayer mode—not cooperative story progression. BioShock: The Collection is described in its official listings as a single-player compilation and is not a way to add campaign co-op.
First, separate campaign co-op from multiplayer
“Co-op” normally means two or more players move through the same story, share objectives, and progress through a campaign together. That is not how any of the cited BioShock releases work. There is no supported procedure for inviting a friend into a story save, enabling split-screen, or linking two players for a joint campaign.

Multiplayer is a broader term. A game can have a standalone competitive mode without allowing players to cooperate in its story. That distinction matters for BioShock 2: its original release included multiplayer combat as a mode separate from the single-player experience, but the available documentation does not describe campaign co-op.

Why the original BioShock has no co-op setup
The first BioShock is a single-player game. Contemporary reporting covered the decision not to include multiplayer, so there is no in-game co-op switch, lobby, invite flow, or campaign networking option to find. If your copy is the original game, the correct “setup” is simply to play its story alone; a second controller or a second account cannot create a mode the game does not provide.

- Bio Shock main game and all single player DLC
- Bio Shock 2 main game and all single player DLC
- Bio Shock Infinite main game and all single player DLC
- Director's Commentary: Imagining Bio Shock, featuring Ken Levine and Shawn Robertson
This also applies when the game is installed through a newer storefront or played on a modern console through backward compatibility. A change of platform does not turn the original single-player design into a cooperative version.
Why BioShock Infinite cannot be played as a co-op campaign
BioShock Infinite likewise has no supported multiplayer mode, according to historical reporting on the game. Elizabeth is an important story character, but she is controlled by the game rather than by a second player. You cannot assign her to another controller or invite a friend to take over her actions.
Do not confuse downloadable story content with co-op. Additional single-player chapters still use the same one-player structure; they do not add a second-player campaign slot.

What BioShock 2 multiplayer actually was
A separate launch path
The original BioShock 2 is the source of most “Does BioShock have multiplayer?” confusion. Its PC manual describes a Multiplayer entry that requires leaving the single-player experience and launching multiplayer separately. That wording is important: multiplayer is not an option inside the campaign, and the manual does not describe two players advancing through the story together.

If you own an edition that genuinely includes this original mode and its menu is available, the supported path is limited to selecting the game’s separate Multiplayer option. The documentation does not establish a campaign invite procedure, cooperative objectives, split-screen controls, or a way to carry a single-player save into that mode.
Combat and matchmaking, not cooperative progression
2K’s announcement describes multiplayer combat set in Rapture locations and refers to matchmaking. Those are characteristics of a standalone player-versus-player mode. They do not mean that two friends can escort one another through BioShock 2’s story, share plasmids, or complete campaign missions as a team.
Calling this “BioShock co-op” creates the wrong expectation. If your goal is to experience the narrative with a friend, the original BioShock 2 multiplayer mode is not a substitute.

Does BioShock: The Collection add co-op?
No supported co-op setup is identified in the Collection’s official product descriptions. The PlayStation and Epic listings describe the included games and their single-player content; they do not advertise a cooperative campaign or present the Collection as a way to restore the original BioShock 2 multiplayer.
Rank #3
- BioShock: The Collection contains all three games within this critically acclaimed franchise
- BioShock Remastered - Explore the undersea city of Rapture, a haven for society's greatest minds
- BioShock 2 Remastered - See Rapture through the eyes of Subject Delta
- BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition - Private investigator Booker DeWitt must take on an impossible task
That means buying or installing the Collection should not be treated as a multiplayer upgrade. In particular:
- Do not assume the remastered BioShock 2 contains the original release’s separate multiplayer mode.
- Do not assume a Collection menu will contain an invite, lobby, or co-op campaign button.
- Do not use the Collection’s inclusion of multiple games as evidence that they can be played together.
The safest reading of the official listings is that the Collection is for the remastered single-player experiences and associated included content. If multiplayer is important to you, verify the exact platform and edition before purchasing or relying on an old guide.
How to check your copy before looking for a co-op option
Use this checklist to avoid following instructions written for a different release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Identify the game. Confirm whether the title is BioShock, BioShock 2, or BioShock Infinite. The names are not interchangeable, and only the original release of BioShock 2 is documented as having a separate multiplayer mode.
- Identify the edition. Check whether you own an original standalone release or BioShock: The Collection. A remastered compilation should not automatically be treated as the original BioShock 2 package.
- Identify the platform. Record the console or PC storefront and the exact product listing. Legacy features can differ by edition, and present-day access to old matchmaking was not established for every platform.
- Check the game’s own menus. In documented original BioShock 2 material, multiplayer is a separate menu destination rather than a campaign toggle. If you are in the story mode, do not expect an “Add player” command to appear there.
- Match the goal to the mode. If you want two people to complete story missions together, none of the cited releases provides that path. If you only want to investigate the original standalone multiplayer, confirm that your edition actually includes it before troubleshooting connections.
What to do when an online guide promises BioShock co-op
If the guide tells you to open a campaign invite menu
Stop and check the game and edition named in the guide. The cited documentation does not provide a campaign invite workflow for any BioShock story. Instructions involving “host campaign,” “join friend,” or “second-player story mode” are not supported by the sources for these releases.
Rank #4
If the guide calls BioShock 2 multiplayer “co-op”
Read the mode description carefully. The manual’s separate Multiplayer entry and 2K’s combat-and-matchmaking description identify a standalone multiplayer experience. They do not establish cooperative mission progression. A guide may be using “co-op” loosely to mean “playing online with someone,” which is not the same feature.
If the guide is written for a different edition
Compare its product name, platform, and release with yours. An instruction that refers to the original BioShock 2 may not apply to the remastered Collection, and a Collection listing that emphasizes single-player content should not be used to promise legacy multiplayer access.
If the Multiplayer option is missing
Do not infer that a hidden setting or controller combination will unlock it. First verify the title and edition. If you have the Collection or a release that does not list the mode, the absence may reflect the product you purchased rather than a configuration error. If you have an original BioShock 2 release, current service availability still needs to be checked for your specific platform; the historical sources do not prove that matchmaking works today.

The manual and 2K announcement establish that the original game had a separate multiplayer mode and matchmaking concept. Before buying an old copy solely for multiplayer, verify all of the following for your platform:
- That the product is the original release rather than a compilation whose listing only promises single-player content.
- That the multiplayer menu is present in the installed version.
- That the platform’s current online services recognize the mode.
- That any required account, network, or matchmaking service is still available.
Without those checks, the only defensible conclusion is historical: the original release included a separate multiplayer mode. It is not a guarantee that you can obtain a match now.
Can two people play BioShock locally?
No local co-op procedure is established for the cited games. The available material does not document split-screen campaign play, two-controller story support, or a local multiplayer setup. Connecting another controller cannot add those capabilities.
Remote-play, streaming, or screen-sharing can let another person watch or take turns, but those are external arrangements rather than a game-supported co-op mode. They do not create simultaneous campaign progression and should not be presented as an official setup.
Quick decision guide
| Your goal | Correct conclusion | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Finish the original BioShock story with a friend | No supported campaign co-op | Play the single-player campaign; there is no setup sequence to enable. |
| Finish BioShock Infinite with a friend | No supported campaign co-op | Play as the single player; Elizabeth is not a second-player character. |
| Find any multiplayer in BioShock 2 | Only the original release is documented as having a separate mode | Confirm the exact edition and platform, then look for its separate Multiplayer entry. |
| Use BioShock: The Collection for co-op | Official listings do not present it as a co-op or multiplayer package | Do not buy the Collection expecting campaign co-op or guaranteed legacy matchmaking. |
| Follow an old matchmaking tutorial | Current availability is unverified by the historical sources | Check present platform support before spending money or troubleshooting. |
Bottom line for “How do I play BioShock co-op?”
There is no supported way to play the BioShock story campaigns cooperatively. The original BioShock 2 is the exception only in the narrow sense that it shipped with a separate multiplayer mode focused on combat and matchmaking. That mode is not campaign co-op, and its current availability depends on the exact legacy edition and platform. Treat the official product listing and the game’s own menu as your starting points, not generic guides that promise a two-player story.
