What the official material says about a second player
The official information located for FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE contains controller and party-command instructions, but no co-op setup instructions. In practical terms, there is no documented menu path for adding player two or assigning a party member to another controller. A second controller may be recognized by the operating system or Steam, yet recognition alone does not create a supported multiplayer slot in the game.
This is a statement about the documented feature set, not proof that every unofficial experiment is impossible. Community modifications may change input behavior, but they are separate from the game’s supported controls and cannot be treated as an official co-op mode.

- Identify your edition and platform. The quoted compatibility information concerns the PC release of INTERGRADE. Console menus and controller behavior can differ.
- Connect one compliant controller before launching the game. Use the normal pairing or USB procedure for your operating system or Steam. XInput and DirectInput are the two input standards named by Square Enix.
- Start the game and test ordinary navigation. Confirm that the title screen and menus respond before changing bindings. This separates a connection problem from a remapping problem.
- Change the layout only after the device responds. Use the in-game controller-layout menu described below rather than assuming a Steam-level remap is required.
- Keep expectations single-player. A second connected device can be useful for testing or for another game, but the documented Remake controls do not provide a player-two assignment.
DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 vibration on Steam
A pinned developer announcement dated June 30, 2022 says that DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 vibration functions are supported when Steam Input is deactivated in Steam’s controller settings. Treat that as the stated setup guidance for those PlayStation controllers, not as a guarantee that every current driver, firmware version or third-party wrapper will behave identically.

If vibration is your only problem, first check the Steam Input state and then test the controller in the game. Do not infer from a missing vibration effect that the controller is unsupported or that multiplayer is disabled; vibration and player assignment are separate issues.

Choose the custom layout and change the inputs that the menu exposes. Square Enix also notes that some inputs cannot be changed. The available excerpt does not establish that the exact menu path is identical on every platform, so look for the equivalent controller-layout screen if your edition presents a different System menu.
What to check when a control cannot be changed
- Confirm that you are editing the in-game custom layout, not only a desktop or operating-system profile.
- Check whether the action is one of the inputs the game marks as fixed. The support guidance does not provide a complete list of exceptions.
- Test the resulting layout in a safe area before entering a difficult fight. A remap can change the button you expect for menus as well as combat.
- Do not use an unchangeable input as evidence of a second-player restriction. Fixed bindings and multiplayer support are unrelated settings.
Keyboard and Steam keybinds
For keyboard play, Square Enix support says that some actions can be rebound through the in-game Options menu, while some bindings cannot be changed. Open Options and use the keybinding controls shown by your copy of the game; the available material does not establish a universal list of rebindable actions for every PC configuration.
Because the game itself determines which actions are exposed, avoid copying a controller layout one-for-one onto a keyboard and assuming every command will be available. Save a small set of changes, test them, then continue. This makes it easier to identify whether an unexpected action is a fixed binding, a conflict with another key or an external Steam profile.

Keyboard setup checklist
- Open the game’s Options menu rather than relying solely on a Steam desktop configuration.
- Change only the actions the game lists as editable.
- Leave an easily reachable key for opening the command menu; Wait Mode depends on being able to reach that menu reliably.
- Test ally commands as well as Cloud’s attacks. L2/R2 are controller labels, so keyboard users should verify which keys the game displays for opening ally menus.
- If an action remains unchanged, treat it as a documented limitation rather than repeatedly assigning it through the same screen.

Party commands are most useful when you treat the other characters as specialists directed by one player. The following procedure uses only the documented systems.

- Enter a fight and watch the active character. The current character remains under direct control while companions act through the game’s AI.
- Open the command menu. In Wait Mode, time slows while the menu is open, allowing you to choose an ability without the normal pressure of real-time combat.
- Choose a shortcut or open the ally menu. Shortcuts provide quick access to assigned commands. L2 and R2 open the respective ally command menus identified by the official system description.
- Select the ability and target. The command is issued to the AI-controlled companion; another person does not take over that character’s movement or camera.
- Return to movement and reassess. Once the command is queued, continue controlling the active character and repeat the process when another ally needs direction.
This arrangement can feel cooperative because you coordinate several characters, but the underlying input model remains one player issuing party commands. It is especially important to distinguish “select an ally’s action” from “let another player control the ally”: only the first behavior is described by the official system information.
Why a second controller does not solve ally control
Controller compatibility answers whether a device can send recognized input. Party commands answer whether the current player can tell an AI ally what to do. Neither document describes a player slot, a join screen, an ally-specific controller profile or a way to split movement and combat input between people. Therefore, connecting two compliant pads is not a documented route to co-op.
Built-in settings versus an unofficial PC modification
A community listing titled Improved Keyboard and Mouse Controls advertises extra keybind options, including keys that can switch the selected party leader in combat. Its listing also describes map and minigame changes. Installation requires a separate Native Mod Loader and a DLL.
This is an unofficial PC modification, not a built-in setup step. The listing’s latest update shown is October 12, 2024, and current compatibility has not been independently confirmed here. A leader-switching keybind changes who the single player selects; it is not evidence that a second person can control that character.

Risks and checks before using the mod
- Confirm that the loader, DLL and mod build match your installed game version.
- Back up saves and keep an unmodified installation available so you can remove the change cleanly.
- Install only from a source you trust and follow that source’s current instructions; the game’s support pages do not cover third-party files.
- Disable the mod when troubleshooting ordinary controller detection. Otherwise, an input problem may come from the loader rather than the game.
- Do not promise co-op to another player because the mod can switch the selected leader or add keys. Those are single-player control changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game does not respond to the controller
- Verify that the device is an XInput- or DirectInput-compliant controller of the type covered by Square Enix’s PC guidance.
- Reconnect or re-pair it, then restart the game so it can detect the device from launch.
- Test one controller at a time. Multiple connected devices can make it unclear which input the game is receiving, but connecting a second device still does not create a second-player slot.
- If you are using a third-party remapper or mod, test without it before changing in-game bindings.
Buttons work but vibration does not
For DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 on Steam, compare your setup with the June 30, 2022 developer guidance to deactivate Steam Input. That advice concerns vibration support; it does not alter party ownership or add multiplayer.
A desired button is unavailable in the remap screen
Some inputs are documented as unchangeable. Keep the default for that action and remap another editable control, or use the keyboard options if you are on PC and the action is exposed there.
An ally will not move when another person presses a second pad
That behavior is consistent with the documented control model: allies are AI-controlled and receive commands from the current player. Recheck the ally command menu and the control layout instead of treating the second pad as a supported co-op device.
A modded setup stops working after an update
Remove the mod and loader, verify that the unmodified game works, then check whether the mod listing provides a build for your installed version. The October 12, 2024 update date shown for Improved Keyboard and Mouse Controls is not a promise of compatibility with every later game or platform revision.

One controller and one keyboard
The game’s documented settings allow controller layout changes and some keyboard rebinding, but they do not describe simultaneous roles for two people. Mixing devices may be useful for accessibility or testing; it is not a documented co-op arrangement.
