To run private nameservers such as ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com on a VPS, you need four pieces to agree: an authoritative DNS service on the VPS, reachable public IP addresses, registrar host (glue) records, and a domain delegation that lists those nameservers. The parent zone uses glue to reach nameservers whose hostnames are inside the domain they serve.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The safest sequence is to build and test the zone first, register both child nameservers at your registrar, delegate the domain, verify the parent and each server from outside the VPS, and keep the previous DNS service online until caches have expired.

What a custom nameserver is
A custom, private, or white-label nameserver is a hostname you control and present as authoritative for a domain. Typical names are ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com. “Private” describes the branding and delegation, not a private network: recursive resolvers on the internet must still be able to reach the server over public DNS.
Your VPS becomes authoritative when its DNS software answers with the zone’s SOA, NS, and other records, and the parent registry delegates the domain to that VPS. A hosting control panel can manage the same records, but the requirements do not change.

Why glue records are required
Normally, a resolver finds a domain’s nameservers by following the parent zone. An in-bailiwick nameserver creates a bootstrap loop: to resolve ns1.example.com, the resolver needs example.com; to resolve example.com, it needs the nameserver. The parent breaks that loop by publishing a glue record containing the nameserver’s address. AWS documentation describes this address as a glue record.
Glue is held at the registrar or registry side, while the matching A or AAAA record is held in your authoritative zone. Both are necessary. Cloudflare notes that in-bailiwick nameservers still need usable parent glue; omitting it can make DNS lookups fail.
Plan the nameservers and addresses
Choose hostnames
Use names below the domain you will delegate, for example:
ns1.example.comns2.example.com
The names must be entered consistently at the registrar, in the zone’s NS records, and in every delegation setting. You can use other labels, but the familiar ns1/ns2 convention makes administration and troubleshooting easier.
Assign stable public addresses
Document the exact address assigned to each hostname. If you have IPv4, record an A address; if you provide IPv6, record an AAAA address as well. AWS allows both IPv4 and IPv6 values for a white-label nameserver. Do not publish an address that can change when the VPS is rebuilt or reprovisioned.
Plan for independent reachability
Two names are the minimum practical delegation, but two labels on one machine are not the same as two independent failure domains. If both addresses depend on one VPS, one hypervisor, one network path, or one firewall, a single outage can take out the entire domain. A second server in another location, or a managed secondary service, improves resilience. The technical steps below work with one VPS, but the reliability decision is yours.

Install an authoritative DNS service
Install and configure authoritative DNS software such as BIND9, or enable the authoritative DNS module in your hosting panel. Configure it to serve the domain’s zone rather than act only as a recursive resolver. Recursion should not be exposed to the public internet unless you have deliberately secured and restricted it.

Open both DNS transports
Permit inbound UDP and TCP on port 53 in every firewall layer:
- the operating-system firewall;
- the VPS provider’s network firewall or security group; and
- any perimeter firewall, load balancer, or security appliance in front of the address.
Most queries use UDP, but resolvers retry over TCP for truncated responses and other conditions. Allowing only UDP produces intermittent failures that can look like propagation problems.
Make the daemon listen publicly
Confirm that the DNS process listens on the VPS’s public address, not just on 127.0.0.1 or an internal interface. Check the service status and local listening sockets, then test from a different network. A local query can succeed while outside resolvers time out if the public interface or provider firewall is wrong.
Create the authoritative zone
Create one authoritative zone for the domain and set its start-of-authority data, nameserver set, and address records. The essential relationships for example.com are:
| Record location | Record | Value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Authoritative zone | example.com NS |
ns1.example.com |
Nameserver member of the delegation |
| Authoritative zone | example.com NS |
ns2.example.com |
Second nameserver member |
| Authoritative zone | ns1.example.com A |
192.0.2.10 |
IPv4 address for the first nameserver |
| Authoritative zone | ns2.example.com A |
192.0.2.11 |
IPv4 address for the second nameserver |
| Authoritative zone | ns1.example.com AAAA |
Your assigned IPv6 address | Optional IPv6 reachability |
| Authoritative zone | ns2.example.com AAAA |
Your assigned IPv6 address | Optional IPv6 reachability |
The addresses above are documentation examples reserved for testing; replace them with the stable addresses assigned to your VPS. If you publish an AAAA record, IPv6 must actually route to the DNS service. A broken IPv6 path can cause delays or failures for resolvers that try it first.
Set the zone’s SOA record and serial according to your DNS software’s normal procedure. The zone must answer authoritatively for both the apex and the nameserver hostnames. After editing, reload the DNS service and check its logs for syntax or permission errors.
Register child nameservers and glue at the registrar
Registrars use different labels. Look for Register nameserver, Child nameservers, Private nameservers, Host records, or Glue records. This operation is separate from changing the domain’s nameserver list.

- Open the registrar’s host or child-nameserver page for
example.com. - Register
ns1.example.comwith the first VPS IPv4 address and, if used, its IPv6 address. - Register
ns2.example.comwith the second address set. - Save the objects and wait for the registrar to confirm that they were accepted.
Do not enter only an A record in the DNS zone and assume that creates glue. The parent registry must know the child nameserver and its address independently.
Delegate the domain to the new nameservers
Once the child objects exist, change the domain’s authoritative nameserver list at the registrar to:
ns1.example.comns2.example.com
Leave out old nameservers only after the new servers answer correctly. Cloudflare’s guidance is that the parent must contain the authoritative nameserver names and required glue for in-bailiwick servers; otherwise lookups fail. The parent’s NS set, glue addresses, and your child zone’s A/AAAA answers must describe the same servers.
Verify the delegation from outside the VPS
Testing only from the VPS can hide routing and firewall problems. Use a workstation or an independent monitoring host on another network. Replace the example domain and addresses in the commands below.

Query a root or TLD server to see what the parent publishes. cPanel documentation demonstrates using dig for this kind of inspection:
dig NS example.com @<parent-or-tld-server>
dig +trace example.com
Confirm that the parent response lists both intended nameservers and supplies glue addresses for each in-bailiwick hostname. The exact parent server to query depends on the top-level domain; use an authoritative server for that parent, not a recursive cache, when you need to inspect delegation.
Query each authoritative server directly
dig SOA example.com @ns1.example.com
dig NS example.com @ns1.example.com
dig SOA example.com @ns2.example.com
dig NS example.com @ns2.example.com
Each answer should carry the aa (authoritative answer) flag and return the expected zone serial, nameserver set, and records. Repeat address queries for the nameserver hostnames:

dig A ns1.example.com @ns1.example.com
dig A ns2.example.com @ns2.example.com
dig AAAA ns1.example.com @ns1.example.com
dig AAAA ns2.example.com @ns2.example.com
An absent AAAA answer is fine when you intentionally provide IPv4 only. An incorrect address is not: compare every child answer with the corresponding glue value.
Check TCP as well as UDP
Force TCP queries to each server:
dig +tcp SOA example.com @ns1.example.com
dig +tcp SOA example.com @ns2.example.com
Successful UDP queries do not prove that TCP port 53 is open. Test both transports after any firewall or provider-network change.
Manage the transition and caching period
Keep the previous DNS service online while the parent delegation and resolver caches update. AWS documentation notes that recursive resolvers typically cache nameserver information for two days, so some users can continue to receive the old delegation for up to two days. During that interval, answer consistently from both old and new services or maintain a deliberate migration plan.
Do not repeatedly switch the delegation while waiting; every change can introduce another cache interval. Monitor authoritative answers from several networks and remove the old service only after the new servers are consistently reachable and returning the intended zone.

Suppose example.com uses two VPS addresses, 192.0.2.10 and 192.0.2.11. The complete arrangement is:
- Registrar child record:
ns1.example.com→192.0.2.10. - Registrar child record:
ns2.example.com→192.0.2.11. - Zone record:
example.com NS ns1.example.com. - Zone record:
example.com NS ns2.example.com. - Zone address records point
ns1andns2to the same addresses registered as glue. - Registrar delegation lists only
ns1.example.comandns2.example.comafter direct tests succeed.
If the registrar shows 192.0.2.10 for ns1 but the child zone answers with another address, fix the mismatch before relying on the delegation.
Troubleshoot failures by symptom
SERVFAIL, timeouts, or intermittent resolution
- Verify that the DNS daemon is running and listening on the public interface.
- Confirm inbound UDP and TCP port 53 at both VPS and provider firewalls.
- Query each nameserver directly from an external network.
- Check daemon logs for zone-load, syntax, permission, or recursion errors.
A timeout indicates reachability or listening problems more often than a bad record. Fix transport first, then recheck the zone.

“Nameserver not found” or missing child host
Return to the registrar’s host-record page and confirm that both child objects exist under the correct parent domain. Check spelling, trailing-dot handling in the registrar interface, and every registered IPv4/IPv6 value. AWS warns that incorrect glue can make a domain unavailable for the cache period, so correct the object rather than waiting for a bad address to expire.

Cloudflare requires the expected nameservers and addresses to match for activation. Update the registrar object or the zone, then repeat external tests until every value agrees.
Only some locations resolve
This usually reflects resolver caching during the delegation change. Keep the old service available, avoid further delegation edits, and allow the cache window to pass. If the problem persists beyond that period, compare answers from affected networks with direct authoritative queries; inconsistent results can indicate multiple old delegations or an anycast, routing, or firewall issue.
One nameserver works and the other fails
Test ns1 and ns2 independently for SOA, NS, address records, UDP, and TCP. A delegation is only as reliable as its weaker listed server. Correct the failed server or remove it from the parent delegation temporarily while you repair it; do not leave a dead nameserver published indefinitely.
Self-hosted VPS DNS versus managed DNS
Both approaches can provide authoritative answers. The important difference is who operates the servers and failure domains.

| Decision area | Authoritative DNS on your VPS | Managed DNS service |
|---|---|---|
| Operational responsibility | You patch the operating system, DNS software, firewall, monitoring, backups, and recovery process. | The provider operates the service; you manage zones and account access. |
| Geographic redundancy | Depends on how many independent VPS locations and networks you deploy. | Usually supplied by the service, but exact architecture varies by provider. |
| Registrar and glue control | You register child nameservers and maintain their addresses. | You normally delegate to the provider’s nameservers; custom glue requirements depend on its design. |
| IPv4/IPv6 support | You must route, firewall, and test every published address. | Availability and behavior depend on the provider’s implementation. |
| DNSSEC and automation | You are responsible for key management, signing, rollover, and API or configuration automation. | Features, automation, and DNSSEC workflow depend on the selected service. |
| Monitoring and outage impact | You need external checks; a VPS outage can affect all zones hosted there. | Monitoring and redundancy are outsourced, but an account or provider outage remains a dependency. |
| Total cost | Includes VPS capacity, administration time, backups, monitoring, and possible secondary servers; no universal price is established here. | Pricing and plan limits vary by provider and change over time; check current terms directly. |
Choose self-hosting when you need control over the authoritative stack, automation, or infrastructure layout and can operate it continuously. Choose managed DNS when geographic redundancy and reduced maintenance matter more than running the service yourself.
Operational checklist after launch
- Record which registrar account owns each child nameserver object.
- Document every IPv4 and IPv6 address, firewall rule, and DNS software configuration.
- Monitor SOA and NS answers from outside your VPS.
- Alert separately on UDP failure, TCP failure, and incorrect address answers.
- Keep zone data and configuration backups in a location independent of the VPS.
- Plan how you will change glue before moving an address; changing a nameserver IP can be disruptive while old glue is cached.
- Review whether two servers actually provide independent power, network, and geographic paths.
- Test a complete rebuild or failover procedure before the first emergency.
The core invariant is simple: the parent’s delegation and glue, the authoritative zone’s NS and address records, and the servers’ live answers must all identify the same reachable systems. If those values agree and both DNS transports are open, custom nameserver delegation on a VPS can resolve normally; if they do not, no amount of waiting will repair the mismatch.
