Deploy Flask, MongoDB and Docker as a three-service Compose application: Gunicorn serves Flask inside a private network, MongoDB stores data on a persistent volume, and NGINX is the only service exposed to the internet. Put credentials in runtime environment configuration, terminate HTTPS at the reverse proxy, and keep tested backups outside the container volume.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
This arrangement answers the practical deployment questions that matter on a VPS: Flask reaches MongoDB by the Compose service name, replacing an application container does not delete database files, and public traffic never reaches the Flask or MongoDB containers directly.

A VPS deployment should separate application serving, data storage and internet-facing traffic. Docker Compose creates a private network for the services, while only the reverse proxy publishes web ports on the host.
| Service | Purpose | Compose connectivity | Public exposure | Persistent storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| web | Flask application served by Gunicorn or another production WSGI server | Reaches MongoDB at the service name mongo; exposes port 8000 internally |
None | Application image and ephemeral container filesystem |
| mongo | MongoDB database | Private Compose network | None | Named volume mounted at /data/db |
| nginx | Reverse proxy, TLS endpoint and public HTTP server | Forwards requests to web |
Host ports 80 and 443 |
Configuration and certificate storage as required by your TLS setup |
Docker’s official samples use the same NGINX/Flask/MongoDB pattern. Flask’s own deployment guidance says, “Do not use the development server when deploying to production.” The development server and debugger are useful locally, but they are not production serving infrastructure.

Prepare the VPS before deploying
Create a deployment account
Use a non-root account for routine deployment work. Retain administrative access only for operating-system changes, Docker installation and firewall management. Disable or tightly restrict password-based SSH access according to your provider’s procedures, and keep a separate recovery path such as the VPS console.
Patch the host and install Docker
Update the operating system, then install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin using the distribution’s supported packages. The exact commands differ between Linux distributions, so follow the package instructions for the operating system installed on your VPS rather than copying commands intended for another release.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
After installation, verify that the deployment account can run Docker and Compose. If you grant non-root Docker access, treat membership in that group as administrative access: anyone who can control the Docker daemon can effectively control the host.
Set DNS and firewall policy
Point the application hostname at the VPS address before requesting a certificate. Allow SSH and the web ports required by your reverse proxy. Do not publish MongoDB’s port to the host unless you have a specific, separately secured administrative requirement. Flask should also remain internal; NGINX is the public application entry point.
Containerize Flask for production
Build a small, repeatable image
Use a pinned Python base image and pin application dependencies so a rebuild does not silently change the runtime. Copy the dependency manifest first when you want Docker to reuse the dependency layer, then copy the application code. Keep development tools, source-control metadata and local virtual environments out of the build context with a suitable ignore file.
The container must bind the WSGI application to the container interface, not only to loopback. Gunicorn (or another production WSGI server) should start the Flask application; do not use flask run for the deployed service.

Keep configuration outside the image
Do not bake MongoDB usernames, passwords or connection strings into the Dockerfile or image layers. Supply them at runtime through an environment file protected on the VPS or through the host’s secret mechanism. The image can be identical in development, staging and production while each environment supplies different values.
Define the Compose application
The following manifest shows the intended shape. It is an illustrative starting point, not a complete production configuration: pin the image versions you choose, add health checks, configure TLS storage, and select a secret mechanism appropriate to your host.

How service discovery works
Compose places the services on its default internal network and provides DNS for each service name. In Flask’s MongoDB configuration, use mongo as the database host rather than localhost. Inside the web container, localhost means the Flask container itself, not the MongoDB container.
The expose declaration makes the web port available to other Compose services without publishing it on the VPS. NGINX can therefore forward to the web service while the host firewall has no Flask port to protect. Only the proxy’s published ports are reachable from the internet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfigure MongoDB credentials and the Flask connection
Inject values at runtime
Define the database name, application credentials and connection URI in the environment configuration consumed by the web service. MongoDB’s Flask tutorial demonstrates passing a connection string through an environment variable when the container runs. Keep the environment file readable only by the deployment account and never commit it to source control.
A connection string for this topology must use the Compose hostname mongo, the MongoDB port inside the network, the intended database name and the authentication settings that match the account you created. If the password contains characters reserved in a URI, encode it according to your driver’s requirements. Keep the URI in one variable so the application does not assemble credentials from scattered settings.

Separate initialization credentials from application access
The example uses MongoDB’s initialization variables for the root account. Use that account for administration, not ordinary application queries. Create an application account with only the permissions the Flask service needs, then place that account’s URI in the web service environment. Rotate both credentials on a schedule and after any suspected exposure.
Make MongoDB data survive redeployments
Containers are replaceable. Data written only to a container’s writable layer is not reliable deployment storage; Docker’s Compose guidance warns that you cannot rely on that layer when containers are regularly replaced.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a named volume or a managed host path
Mount a named volume at MongoDB’s data directory, /data/db, as shown above. Docker manages the volume independently of the MongoDB container, so recreating the container does not remove the database files. A carefully managed host path can also work, but document its ownership, permissions, filesystem location and backup scope before using it.
Never include the MongoDB volume in routine cleanup commands. Removing a container is a normal deployment action; removing its data volume is a destructive database operation.
Persistence is not backup
A volume protects against container replacement, not every failure. A damaged VPS disk, accidental deletion, ransomware, operator error or a bad migration can affect the live volume. Maintain an independent backup plan, store copies outside the VPS, restrict access to those copies and periodically perform a restore into an isolated MongoDB instance. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Put NGINX and HTTPS at the edge
Reverse-proxy responsibilities
NGINX receives requests for the public hostname, handles TLS, redirects HTTP to HTTPS, and forwards requests to the internal web service. Forward the original host, scheme and client-information headers required by the application. Configure Flask to understand that it is behind a proxy; otherwise URL generation, secure-cookie behavior or redirect schemes can be wrong.

Flask’s deployment documentation describes this division of labor: a WSGI server runs the application, while an HTTP server in front of it acts as a reverse proxy. Caddy or a cloud load balancer can fill the same edge role, but the proxy still needs a correctly configured upstream, TLS policy and forwarded headers.
Certificate and hostname checks
Ensure DNS resolves to the VPS before certificate issuance. Test both the HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect and the HTTPS hostname through the proxy. Keep certificate files and renewal configuration outside disposable application containers, and make renewal a monitored operational task rather than a one-time setup step.
Keep development and production Compose settings separate
Development commonly bind-mounts application code, publishes Flask’s port and enables rapid reloads. Production should remove those bind mounts, use the built image, set production environment variables, publish only the proxy ports, and apply restart behavior such as unless-stopped.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Docker recommends maintaining production-specific Compose settings and adding operational services as needed. A common approach is a base Compose file plus a production override, or a separate production file reviewed alongside the application. Whichever structure you choose, verify the rendered configuration before starting it so a development mount or debug setting cannot slip into the VPS deployment.
Deploy the stack
- Prepare the project directory. Place the Dockerfile, Flask source, dependency manifest, Compose files, NGINX configuration and protected environment file under the deployment account. Keep secrets out of the repository.
- Review image and secret settings. Confirm that Python, MongoDB and NGINX image tags are pinned, the MongoDB volume maps to
/data/db, and the web service’s URI usesmongorather thanlocalhost. - Build the Flask image. Run
docker compose buildfrom the directory containing the production Compose configuration. Inspect the build output for dependency or permission errors before starting the stack. - Start services in the background. Run
docker compose up -d. The proxy, web service and MongoDB container should be created from the declared configuration. - Inspect service state. Use
docker compose psto check containers, then inspect logs with commands such asdocker compose logs -f weband the corresponding MongoDB or NGINX logs. Look for failed imports, authentication errors, invalid proxy upstreams and certificate problems. - Verify the internal path. Confirm that Flask starts under Gunicorn, can resolve the
mongoservice, and can authenticate to the configured database. Do not expose MongoDB merely to make this test easier. - Verify the public path. Request the application’s health endpoint through the HTTPS hostname. Check the certificate, redirect behavior, response status and any health information your application intentionally exposes.
- Record the deployment. Save the image tags, Compose revision, environment change and backup status in your operational notes so a later rollback is identifiable.
Update Flask without disturbing MongoDB
For an application-only change, rebuild the web image and recreate only that service. Docker documents the pattern docker compose up --no-deps -d web after rebuilding. This avoids needlessly recreating dependent services, while the named MongoDB volume remains attached to the database container.
Review schema or index changes separately from a code rollout. Take a current backup before a migration that could alter or remove data, and keep a rollback plan for the application image. Do not treat a successful container recreation as proof that a database migration is reversible.

Operate the VPS safely
Backups and restore drills
- Back up MongoDB independently of the live container lifecycle.
- Keep at least one copy outside the VPS and protect backup credentials.
- Test restoring into an isolated environment, including authentication and application compatibility.
- Document retention, restore steps and who can authorize destructive recovery actions.
Monitoring and maintenance
- Watch disk space because MongoDB data, Docker layers, logs and backups all consume the VPS filesystem.
- Monitor container health and the public health endpoint.
- Patch the host operating system and rebuild images when security updates are available.
- Review NGINX, Gunicorn and MongoDB logs for repeated errors rather than relying only on container restart status.
- Rotate credentials and remove unused images, networks and temporary files without deleting the MongoDB volume.
Limit the attack surface
Publish only ports 80 and 443 from the proxy. Keep MongoDB and Gunicorn on the private Compose network, use HTTPS for client traffic, protect the environment file, and avoid enabling Flask’s debugger in production. Apply the least database privilege practical for the application and restrict administrative access to SSH and approved operators.

Flask cannot connect to MongoDB
Check the URI host first. In Compose it should reference mongo, not 127.0.0.1 or localhost. Then verify that the credentials in the web container match the initialized MongoDB account, the database name is correct, and both services are on the same Compose network. Read the web and MongoDB logs together so an authentication failure is not mistaken for a network failure.
NGINX returns a gateway error
Confirm that Gunicorn is listening on the container interface and the port NGINX uses, that the upstream name is web, and that the web container is running. A Flask process bound only to loopback is reachable from itself but not from NGINX.
Data appears to vanish after redeployment
Inspect the Compose configuration and verify that the same named volume is mounted at /data/db. Check whether an operator removed the volume or changed the project name, which can create a different automatically named volume. Restore from the independent backup if the original files were deleted; recreating the container cannot recover a removed volume.
HTTPS works inconsistently
Check DNS records, certificate coverage for the requested hostname, renewal status, and the proxy’s forwarded scheme headers. Test the redirect and the secure endpoint separately. If Flask generates HTTP URLs behind HTTPS, review its proxy-awareness configuration and NGINX headers.
Self-hosted MongoDB or a managed service?
A MongoDB container gives you direct control over the database process, data location and upgrade timing, but you own patching, disk capacity, backups, restore testing, monitoring and failure recovery. A managed MongoDB service can reduce those operational tasks and may offer built-in backup and scaling controls, but it adds a recurring service charge, provider-specific network configuration and dependence on an external service.
Make the choice using these questions:
- Who will monitor the database and respond when the VPS or disk fails?
- Can you meet the required backup retention and restore time with your own tooling?
- Will application-to-database network latency or egress charges affect the workload?
- Do you need provider-managed scaling, high availability or security controls that a single VPS does not provide?
- Can the team patch and upgrade a self-hosted MongoDB instance without unacceptable downtime?
There is no universal VPS size or price supported by the deployment pattern alone. The operating picture includes the VPS, storage growth, backup storage, TLS and the staff time required to maintain them.
Choose the reverse-proxy layer
NGINX is a conventional choice when you want explicit proxy configuration and broad documentation. Caddy can reduce TLS automation work, while a cloud load balancer moves edge availability and some observability responsibilities to a provider. Compare TLS automation, proxy configuration complexity, logging and metrics, failover behavior, and recurring cost. Whichever edge you select, keep the same boundary: public traffic terminates at the proxy, and Flask and MongoDB remain private.
Quick Recap
Pre-launch checklist
- Flask runs under Gunicorn or another production WSGI server, never the development server.
- Python, MongoDB and proxy image versions are pinned.
- MongoDB credentials and the URI arrive through runtime configuration, not the image.
- The Flask URI uses the Compose service name
mongo. - MongoDB mounts a persistent volume at
/data/db. - An independent backup exists and a restore has been tested.
- Only NGINX publishes ports
80and443. - DNS, HTTPS, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirection and forwarded headers work for the production hostname.
- Production settings remove development bind mounts and enable an appropriate restart policy.
- Health checks, logs, disk monitoring, patching and credential rotation have named owners.
- The deployment procedure and rollback steps are written down before the first update.
