To play four-player split-screen in the current Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2, open the game, press A at the title screen, choose Battle Mode, select Local Battle, set the number of players using the console to four, pair one controller for each player, then choose pilots and a mission. If Local Battle is missing, download the game’s free update first; Nintendo says an internet connection and software update are required to obtain Local Split-Screen Battle Mode.
First, make sure you have the right Star Fox game
These instructions apply to the current Star Fox release for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s product information identifies that version as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive and describes local split-screen battles with up to three friends, making four players total on one console.

Do not use the menu names here as a guide for Star Fox 64 on Nintendo 64 or Star Fox 64 3D on Nintendo 3DS. Those are different releases with different multiplayer systems. In particular, the 3DS manual describes multiplayer through wireless communication, so its setup should not be expected to match the Switch 2 menus.
If the title screen, main menu, or mode names do not match the steps below, confirm the game’s name and platform before troubleshooting. A similarly named older game is the most likely explanation for a different menu structure.

What four-player split-screen actually is
It is a Battle Mode feature
The four-player local option is in Battle Mode. Nintendo describes this mode as aerial combat with and against other players and CPU-controlled opponents. The one-console match uses split-screen views so each local participant can fly and fight in the same battle.
It is not four-player campaign co-op
The documented campaign co-op arrangement is for two players sharing flight and gunner responsibilities. That is separate from the four-player split-screen Battle Mode option. If you are looking for a four-person story campaign, the available local setup does not provide that arrangement.
It is different from online and GameShare play
Nintendo also describes online four-on-four team battles and local GameShare as separate ways to play. Neither changes the one-console procedure in this guide. For four people sitting at one Switch 2, select Local Battle rather than an online or GameShare option.
Before you start
Install the free mode update
Nintendo states: “Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is available in a free update. Internet connection and software update required to download.” The update is therefore a prerequisite if the mode has not yet been added to your copy.
Start the game after the update has installed and check the Battle Mode menu again. If Local Battle still does not appear, close and relaunch the software, then verify that the update completed on the console. The official information does not provide a separate in-game switch for manually enabling split-screen.
Have four compatible controllers available
The setup asks each local player to pair a controller. Four-player play consequently requires enough compatible controllers for all four participants, including the controller used by the person who launched the game.

The cited Nintendo setup instructions do not name particular controller models. Check compatibility for your Switch 2 and region before buying or borrowing hardware rather than assuming that every older or third-party controller will work.

Set the console’s player count to four
When the local setup asks for the number of players using this console, change the value to four and press A. This tells the game to prepare a four-person local match before it begins controller pairing.
-
Pair one controller for each player
Follow the on-screen pairing prompts. Each of the four players pairs a controller, including the player who started the software. If a participant is not detected, do not continue until that controller has completed the pairing prompt.
-
Choose pilots
After controller pairing is complete, continue to the pilot-selection screen. Each participant chooses a pilot using the controller assigned during the previous step.

Select a mission and begin
Choose the mission when the game presents the mission-selection screen, then confirm to start the local Battle Mode match. The resulting session is the four-player split-screen battle you configured on one console.
Troubleshooting the setup
There is no Local Battle option
The most important check is the free software update. Nintendo identifies Local Split-Screen Battle Mode as update content and says an internet connection is required to download it. Connect the console to the internet, allow the game to update, and relaunch it before checking Battle Mode again.
Also verify that you are running the current Nintendo Switch 2 Star Fox, not Star Fox 64 or Star Fox 64 3D. The older games use different multiplayer contexts and will not necessarily contain a menu called Local Battle.

The game will not proceed after selecting four players
Return to the controller-pairing prompt and make sure every participant has paired a controller. The documented flow places pairing after you set the console to four players; selecting four does not replace the need to register four controllers.

If one controller cannot be paired, check that it is compatible with the Switch 2 and that it is being paired through the prompt shown by the game. Nintendo’s instructions do not specify a particular controller model, so compatibility must be confirmed for the hardware you are using.
You expected a four-player story mode
Use Battle Mode for four local players. The documented campaign co-op feature supports two players sharing pilot and gunner roles, so changing the Local Battle player count will not turn the campaign into a four-player co-op session.
You selected an online option by mistake
Back out and choose Battle Mode → Local Battle. Nintendo lists online four-on-four team battles separately, with their own Nintendo Switch Online, account, and internet requirements. Those requirements apply to online play, not to the one-console menu path described here.
You are unsure what the split-screen layout will look like
Nintendo’s cited setup information does not specify the exact screen division, player-window arrangement, or television configuration. You can rely on the mode being local split-screen, but do not assume a particular quadrant layout or display orientation until the game shows it on your setup.
How the available multiplayer choices differ
| Arrangement | Where to find it | Players or roles documented by Nintendo | Connection and hardware context |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-console local split-screen | Battle Mode → Local Battle | Up to four players total, described as you plus up to three friends | One Nintendo Switch 2; pair a controller for each local player; free update required if not already installed |
| Campaign co-op | Campaign co-op instructions | Two players sharing pilot and gunner roles | Different from four-player split-screen Battle Mode |
| Online team battle | Online Battle options | Four-on-four teams | Separate Nintendo Switch Online, account, and internet requirements listed by Nintendo |
| Local GameShare | GameShare feature | Player count not stated in the cited product information | Separate local arrangement; do not substitute it for Local Battle on one console |
The table’s distinctions matter because the same game presents several multiplayer concepts. If your goal is four people sharing one screen, the only row that matches is Local Battle.

Controller planning for four people
Count controllers before opening the mode
Because the game asks each player to pair a controller, count four compatible controllers before entering Local Battle. A missing fourth controller will prevent the intended four-player arrangement even if the player-count setting is correct.
Do not infer a model list from the menu
The official setup material explains that controllers are paired but does not identify exact supported models. Treat compatibility as a console- and region-specific question. Verify it before purchasing a controller for this purpose, particularly if you are considering hardware from an earlier Nintendo system.
Keep the pairing order clear
Have players pair in the order requested by the on-screen prompts, then use the assigned controller for pilot selection. This avoids confusing which controller belongs to which local player when the game advances to the next screen.

What this setup does and does not require
- Required for the documented local flow: the current Nintendo Switch 2 Star Fox, Battle Mode, Local Battle, a setting of four players using the console, and one paired compatible controller per player.
- Required to obtain the split-screen feature when absent: an internet connection and the game’s free software update, as stated by Nintendo.
- Not part of the one-console instructions: Nintendo Switch Online, multiple consoles, or online matchmaking. Those belong to separate online arrangements.
- Not established by the official setup information: a specific controller-model list, a promised screen quadrant layout, or a required television configuration.
Older versions use different multiplayer contexts
Star Fox 64 and Star Fox 64 3D should not be treated as interchangeable with the Switch 2 release simply because their titles are similar. The instructions above depend on the Switch 2 game’s Battle Mode and Local Battle menus.
The Star Fox 64 3D manual describes multiplayer through wireless communication, which is a different setup context from four players selecting Local Battle on one Switch 2. If you are using an older Nintendo system, consult the instructions for that specific release instead of looking for the Switch 2 menu names.
A precise pre-match checklist
- Confirm the software is the current Star Fox release for Nintendo Switch 2.
- Install the free update if Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is not available.
- Open the game from the HOME Menu and press A at the title screen.
- Enter Battle Mode, then Local Battle.
- Set the number of players using this console to four and press A.
- Pair a compatible controller for every player.
- Choose pilots, select a mission, and start the battle.
Following that order keeps the mode, player count, and controller assignments aligned with Nintendo’s documented setup.
