Run at least two identical web nodes in separate failure domains, place a health-checking application load balancer in front of them, move files and uploads to shared or object storage, connect WordPress to a database service that can promote a replica automatically, and keep tested backups. For a regional disaster, replicate the database and files to a second region and use health-checked DNS or a global load balancer to direct visitors there.

What “high availability” means for WordPress
A highly available site continues serving requests when a process, server, availability zone, or (with additional design) an entire region fails. The goal is not an absolute promise of zero downtime. It is a measured recovery objective built around two numbers:

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Recovery time objective (RTO): the maximum acceptable time before the site is serving normally again.
- Recovery point objective (RPO): the maximum acceptable amount of recent data that may be lost.
Decide which failures you are addressing before choosing services. Replacing a crashed virtual machine is a local availability problem. Promoting a database in another region is a disaster-recovery event with different latency, replication, and data-consistency risks. A design that handles one does not automatically handle the other.
Reference architecture: separate every layer that can fail
Do not clone one WordPress server and call the result highly available. A second web server does not help if both servers depend on one disk, one database instance, or one unmonitored load balancer. Treat the application as several layers with explicit failure handling.

| Layer | Recommended pattern | Failure it addresses | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge and security | CDN or edge proxy with TLS termination, caching, and WAF controls | Origin overload, some network attacks, and edge-location outages | Cached responses can mask an origin problem but cannot replace origin recovery. |
| Traffic routing | Application load balancer with active health checks | Unhealthy process or web node | The check must test the dependencies that make the site usable, not merely an open TCP port. |
| Web tier | Two or more identical nodes across availability zones, managed by autoscaling | Instance or zone loss | Nodes must be disposable and stateless; never hand-edit one node. |
| WordPress files | Shared file storage for the installation and wp-content, or object storage/CDN for static assets |
Loss of a node and inconsistent plugin, theme, or upload files | Permissions, locking behavior, and deployment timing must be consistent on every node. |
| Database | Managed MySQL-compatible cluster with automatic failover and a stable writer/cluster endpoint | Database-instance failure | Applications need connection retries and must not pin themselves to an individual host address. |
| Object cache | Multi-node cache service such as a managed Redis-compatible tier | Cache-node loss and repeated database work | Cache is disposable; never treat it as the source of truth. |
| Backups | Separate, encrypted copies of database, files, configuration, and infrastructure definitions | Corruption, operator error, ransomware, or a regional event | A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan. |
A documented AWS design combines CloudFront, S3, an Application Load Balancer, EC2 Auto Scaling, ElastiCache, Aurora MySQL, and EFS. A Microsoft design uses Front Door, App Service, Blob Storage, and Azure Database for MySQL with a standby; an AKS variant adds shared Azure NetApp Files, managed Redis, MySQL high availability, and multiregion replication. The product names differ, but the separation of concerns is the transferable idea.
Set objectives before deploying anything
Write a one-page availability profile and have the people who operate the site approve it. Include:
- Traffic volume, peak concurrency, upload rate, and expected growth.
- Whether a single process, instance, availability zone, or region must be survivable without manual intervention.
- An RTO and RPO for ordinary node loss, database failure, and regional disaster.
- Which WordPress actions create writes: publishing, comments, orders, user registration, game-save data, or integrations.
- Budget for duplicate zones, storage, database replicas, data transfer, monitoring, and a secondary region.
- Who can declare a regional incident, who can fence writes, and who can approve rollback.
Local automatic failover is normally faster than cross-region promotion. Cross-region replication is often asynchronous, so an RPO of zero should not be promised unless the chosen database design and measured network behavior actually provide it.
Make WordPress reproducible and disposable
Version the infrastructure and configuration
Keep infrastructure definitions, web-server configuration, PHP settings, deployment scripts, and WordPress configuration in version control. Store secrets—database credentials, salts, API keys, and certificates—in a managed secret store rather than in an image or repository. Record the exact PHP, web-server, WordPress, theme, and approved-plugin versions used to build each release.
Build an immutable image or container
Create a tested image or container containing PHP, the web server, WordPress core, and approved plugins and themes. A new node should boot from that artifact, retrieve secrets, mount its shared data, pass startup checks, and register with the load balancer without an administrator copying files. Deploy a new image to a small portion of the fleet first, then expand it after health and application checks pass.

Separate code from mutable data
WordPress core and reviewed extensions can be part of the image. User uploads, generated media, and any content that must be shared by every node belong on shared storage or in object storage. Do not let a plugin silently write important state to a node-local directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDeploy the web tier across failure domains
- Create at least two nodes in separate availability zones. Use the same image, instance profile, PHP limits, web-server settings, and time configuration. A single zone does not satisfy zone-level availability.
- Place an application load balancer in front of them. Configure listeners for HTTP-to-HTTPS redirection and HTTPS termination or end-to-end TLS as required. The balancer should distribute traffic only to nodes that pass health checks.
- Enable automatic replacement and scaling. Set a minimum capacity of two across zones, define scale-out and scale-in signals, and make replacement safe when a node disappears without a graceful shutdown.
- Use a health endpoint designed for routing decisions. A request to
/wp-login.phpcan demonstrate that PHP is being served, as AWS notes, but it does not prove that the database, shared files, cache, or critical integrations work. A custom endpoint should check the web process and essential dependencies, return a fast status, avoid creating writes, and fail closed when a required dependency is unavailable. - Protect health checks from accidental caching. Send no-store headers, exclude the endpoint from the CDN cache, and log its latency and status separately from visitor traffic.
Never use an expensive front-page render as the only probe. It can overload a struggling site and may remain a cached success after the origin has failed.
Externalize WordPress files and uploads
Shared file storage
A shared file system can hold the WordPress installation directory, themes, plugins, and uploads so every node sees the same content. AWS describes moving the entire installation onto EFS and mounting it at boot as a way to make the web tier stateless and independent of any one EC2 instance. Apply the same ownership and permission model on every node, test concurrent reads and writes, and monitor storage throughput and latency.
Object storage and a CDN
For media-heavy sites, put immutable or cacheable assets in object storage and serve them through a CDN. Keep a deliberate strategy for URLs, cache invalidation, private media, and plugin compatibility. Some plugins assume a local POSIX file system; those plugins need a supported object-storage adapter or must remain on shared file storage.
Deployment rules
- Deploy plugin and theme changes atomically, or use a release directory and switch a symlink/mount only after the new release is complete.
- Do not allow automatic plugin updates independently on each node.
- Back up uploads separately from code so a bad release cannot overwrite the only copy.
- Test restore permissions and ownership, not just whether files exist.
Use a database endpoint that survives promotion
Run WordPress on a managed MySQL-compatible service with a primary and one or more replicas in separate zones. Aurora MySQL, for example, automatically handles promotion between a primary and Aurora Replicas; AWS states that failover typically takes less than 30 seconds, but that is a vendor-stated typical value rather than a guarantee for every workload.

- Create the cluster with backups, encryption, deletion protection, and maintenance windows appropriate to the site.
- Point WordPress at the provider’s stable writer or cluster endpoint, never at an individual instance address.
- Configure PHP and the database driver to retry transient connection failures with bounded backoff. Avoid retry loops that multiply traffic during an outage.
- Run a controlled failover and confirm that publishing, login, comments, scheduled tasks, and administrative queries recover without changing configuration.
- Monitor replica lag, connection saturation, slow queries, storage growth, and failed transactions.
Database automatic failover does not resolve application-level conflicts. If two regions can accept writes simultaneously, you need explicit conflict handling or a write-fencing design; otherwise a regional event can create split brain and divergent WordPress content.
Add caching without making it a dependency
Use an external, multi-node object cache when database load or PHP render time warrants it. Configure all web nodes to use the same cache namespace and eviction policy. Cache invalidation must occur when posts, menus, widgets, or settings change; verify that the publishing path purges both the object cache and any CDN objects that contain stale content.
Sessions should be stateless where possible. If a plugin requires sessions, store them in a shared service and test login continuity when a request moves between nodes. A cache outage should degrade to database-backed requests, not take the entire site offline. Set connection timeouts so an unavailable cache does not block PHP workers.
Put an edge service in front of the origin
A CDN or edge service can terminate TLS, cache static responses, absorb bursts, and provide WAF rules. CloudFront is part of AWS’s reference architecture; Front Door is used in Microsoft’s App Service design. Configure:
- Separate cache behavior for static assets and dynamic WordPress routes.
- Bypasses for administration, login, previews, cookies, and personalized responses.
- Origin timeouts and retry counts that do not turn a partial outage into a retry storm.
- Certificate renewal, security headers, and an emergency cache-bypass procedure.
- An explicit stale-content policy. Microsoft notes that Front Door can serve cached responses while an origin is temporarily unavailable, which limits availability loss but does not replace complete origin recovery.
Automate backups and recovery of every stateful component
A WordPress restore requires more than a database dump. AWS recovery guidance calls out the operating system and services, WordPress code and configuration, themes and plugins, uploads, and database content. Back up and document:
- Database snapshots and point-in-time logs.
- Uploads and other shared files, including media metadata.
- Known-good application images, deployment manifests, and infrastructure definitions.
- Secrets and certificates through a recoverable, access-controlled process rather than plain-text exports.
- CDN, load-balancer, DNS, firewall, and monitoring configuration.
Keep copies in a separate account or security boundary and, for regional protection, in another region. Encrypt them, set retention periods, and alert on failed jobs. Perform a scheduled restore into an isolated environment; measure how long it takes to rebuild the application and how much data is missing. Record the result as your measured RTO and RPO.
Design regional failover deliberately
Warm standby or pilot light
Maintain a secondary environment with the network, IAM, images, secrets process, and required services already defined. A warm standby keeps capacity running and reduces promotion time; a pilot light keeps only the minimum components active and scales during an incident, reducing cost but increasing RTO.
Replicate data and files
Replicate database changes and shared files to the secondary region. Cross-region database replication is commonly asynchronous, so identify the last confirmed replication point before promotion. Replicate uploads and verify that object metadata, permissions, and encryption keys are usable in the destination.
Route traffic and fence writes
- Monitor the primary with checks that are independent of the failing path where possible.
- Declare an incident according to a written authority matrix; do not let an automated DNS check alone make an irreversible data decision.
- Stop or fence writes in the primary before promoting the secondary. Disable scheduled jobs that could publish or modify data in both regions.
- Promote the secondary database, mount or expose the replicated files, warm caches, and run smoke tests.
- Change health-checked DNS, such as Route 53, or a global load balancer to direct traffic to the secondary. Respect DNS TTLs and account for resolver caching.
- Monitor error rate, login, publishing, media uploads, and replication status. Keep the original region isolated until it is safe to reconcile data.
Route changes are not instantaneous because clients and recursive resolvers may retain old answers. A global load balancer can usually make a faster decision at the edge, but it still requires a healthy, correctly promoted origin.

Write the runbook while testing, not afterward. Include commands or console paths for declaring the incident, scaling the secondary, promoting the database, changing routing, validating the site, and returning to normal. Do not infer RTO or RPO from a provider’s marketing statement or from a successful health check.
Common failure patterns and fixes
| Symptom | Likely design error | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic keeps reaching a broken node | Health check tests only the port or a cached page | Use a dependency-aware, uncached endpoint and verify load-balancer thresholds. |
| New nodes show missing images or old plugins | Files are stored on node-local disks or deployments are not atomic | Use shared/object storage and an immutable release process. |
| Requests fail during database promotion | WordPress uses a single-instance address or has no retry behavior | Use the stable cluster endpoint and test bounded connection retries. |
| Logins break when requests move between nodes | Sessions or salts differ between nodes | Centralize session state where required and distribute identical configuration and salts. |
| CDN shows stale pages after publishing | Only the object cache is purged | Define invalidation for CDN objects and verify dynamic-route cache rules. |
| Both regions accept edits | No write fencing or incident authority | Choose one writable region, disable competing writers, and document promotion ownership. |
| Recovery works on paper but not in practice | Backups were never restored or keys and permissions were omitted | Run isolated restores and include access, encryption, ownership, and configuration checks. |
Choosing an architecture by risk and budget
| Pattern | Handles | RTO/RPO expectation | Operational burden | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single node with backups | Operator mistakes and some data loss | Manual restore; measure both | Low infrastructure complexity | Any node or zone failure causes downtime. |
| Two-zone stateless web tier with managed database failover | Process, instance, and zone failures | Usually faster local recovery; database behavior must be measured | Moderate; managed services reduce clustering work | Higher baseline cost and shared-storage/database latency. |
| Two-zone tier plus CDN and external cache | Local failures and traffic bursts | Improved response continuity; cache rebuild time remains | Moderate to high | More cache invalidation and edge-routing rules. |
| Warm secondary region | Regional disaster with controlled promotion | Faster than rebuilding from nothing; asynchronous replication may lose recent writes | High | Duplicate services, replication, and operational procedures. |
| Active-active regions | Regional loss with minimal routing interruption | Potentially low downtime, but consistency depends on the data design | Very high | Write conflicts, split-brain prevention, and provider lock-in are substantial. |
Managed services reduce patching and cluster administration, while cloud-specific storage, databases, and routing can reduce portability. Shared files, cache, CDN behavior, and database distance can dominate user-perceived performance; test from the regions where players and editors actually connect.
A practical launch checklist

- Database connections use a stable cluster endpoint and survive a controlled promotion.
- Cache, CDN, sessions, and invalidation rules are consistent across nodes.
- Backups cover database, uploads, code, configuration, secrets process, and infrastructure.
- Copies are isolated and restores have been timed.
- Regional routing, write fencing, DNS behavior, and rollback have been rehearsed.
- A named owner can declare an incident and follow the runbook.
Sources and scope of the recommendations
The architecture patterns above reflect published AWS guidance for scaling the web tier, shared EFS storage, Aurora and ElastiCache data tiers, and regional recovery, plus Microsoft designs for WordPress on App Service and AKS. The “typically less than 30 seconds” database-failover figure is AWS’s 2026 vendor-stated typical value, not an uptime or recovery guarantee. No universal uptime percentage or broadly applicable cost can be stated without your workload, region, traffic, and service configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a WordPress plugin alone provide high availability?
No. Plugins run inside one application instance and cannot make the web, storage, database, routing, backups, and recovery process redundant. High availability requires coordinated infrastructure and tested operations.
How many WordPress servers do I need?
Use at least two web nodes in separate availability zones for zone-level resilience. The required count above two depends on traffic, autoscaling limits, maintenance capacity, and the recovery objective.
Is a CDN the same as failover?
No. A CDN can serve cached content and reduce origin load, but dynamic requests still require a healthy origin. Regional failover needs replicated data, a promoted secondary, and health-checked routing.
