To set up a hotkey in Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Hotkeys, click the field beside the action you want, and press the key combination to assign. You can bind global stream controls as well as actions for individual scenes and sources.
Assign a hotkey in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open Streamlabs Desktop.
- Click the Settings cog.
- Select Hotkeys.
- Find the action you want to control and click its hotkey field.
- Press the key combination you want to use. Streamlabs assigns that combination to the selected action.
- Scroll through the panel to configure hotkeys for individual scenes or sources, if needed.
Streamlabs recommends using a combination of at least two keys to reduce the chance of triggering an action accidentally while using another application. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee against conflicts.
What can you control with hotkeys?
Streamlabs’ examples include starting or stopping a stream, muting the microphone, saving a replay, and skipping alerts. You can also bind show or hide actions for items such as an alert box or display capture in a particular scene. The available scene and source actions let you control more than broad stream functions.
Bind a global action
For a control such as microphone mute or replay save, find that action in Settings > Hotkeys, click its field, and press your chosen combination. Check the label carefully so you bind the intended action.

Bind a scene or source action
Scroll to the relevant scene or source entry in the Hotkeys panel, click the field for the action you want—such as showing or hiding an alert box—and press the combination. Choose the entry associated with the scene or source you intend to control.
Streamlabs’ instructions describe how to assign combinations, but do not establish universal default bindings. If a field is blank or has a combination you do not want, set it to the combination you prefer rather than relying on a presumed default.

When a hotkey is not responding
Show/Hide hotkeys for a source
Streamlabs Support has documented cases where Show/Hide hotkeys for some source types did not respond. Its suggested workaround is to toggle Dual Output off and then on. The support page has conflicting status and date information: it displays “RESOLVED” and March 16, 2026, while an update says an official fix is still in the works; August 23, 2026 also appears near the author/date area. Treat the toggle as a documented workaround, not proof that the issue is fixed or affects every version. If it does not help, check the current Streamlabs Support page for the latest status.
Check the selected action and combination
If another hotkey does not behave as expected, return to Settings > Hotkeys and verify that you assigned the combination to the intended action or scene/source entry. Streamlabs recommends combinations of two or more keys to reduce accidental triggers from another application.

Do you need a stream deck?
No dedicated controller is required: this setup uses your keyboard. Streamlabs describes native hotkeys as an alternative to buying a stream deck. A dedicated control surface such as an Elgato Stream Deck or Loupedeck is an optional choice if you prefer physical buttons; it is not necessary to follow these steps.
