Launch it from the HOME Menu and choose a game. The standard membership is enough; the Expansion Pack is not required for the NES library.
What you need before you start
- A Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch-family system with internet access. Nintendo’s service FAQ lists a Switch or Switch 2 with system menu version 6.0 or higher.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership on the Nintendo Account you select in eShop. Nintendo’s access instructions and the NES software listing require Nintendo Switch Online.
- A controller compatible with your console. A separate NES-style controller is optional, not a setup requirement.
Download and open the NES app
- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the user profile linked to the Nintendo Account with the active membership.
- In eShop, select Nintendo Switch Online.
- Choose Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online.
- Select Free Download, then select Free Download again to confirm.
- When the app appears on the HOME Menu, open it and choose a game.
Nintendo says the console may need internet access periodically to verify membership status. You do not access this library through a physical cartridge.
Which Nintendo Switch Online membership includes NES games?
The standard Nintendo Switch Online membership includes the classic NES library. The Expansion Pack adds other classic systems and selected benefits, but it is not needed just to play NES games. Compare the access and plan options on Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online overview.
| Option | Who it covers | NES access | Price and term |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard individual membership | One Nintendo Account | Included | US annual price: $19.99 USD/year, according to Nintendo’s service overview accessed in 2026. Prices vary by country and duration. |
| Standard family membership | Up to eight Nintendo Accounts | Included for eligible accounts in the family group | US annual price: $34.99 USD/year, according to Nintendo’s service overview accessed in 2026. Prices vary by country and duration. |
| Expansion Pack | Depends on the individual or family membership selected | NES access is included; the Expansion Pack is not necessary for it | Check Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s local service overview for current regional price and term. |
Nintendo’s US support page describes a seven-day free trial for eligible accounts. It is available once per account and cannot be started while an individual or family membership is active. A payment method is required for auto-renewal; Nintendo says you can avoid a charge by turning off auto-renewal before the trial ends. Check the trial instructions and local terms before signing up.

- Check your country setting: the eShop available on the console depends on the country setting on the Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s membership purchasing instructions explain how to purchase or extend a membership.

Regional availability and controllers
Plan availability, prices and service features vary by country. Nintendo’s service and feature availability by country page lists regional differences; use the eShop for the country associated with your Nintendo Account to see the options that apply to you.
You can play with a suitable controller you already own. Nintendo associates its optional NES controllers with the NES software, but the access instructions do not require buying one.
