How to Set Up OBS for a Continuous Church Stream on YouTube

A practical OBS and YouTube setup for church services, with encoder settings, network checks, preflight steps and the archive risk for streams over 12 hours.

For recurring church services, OBS can send your live camera, video and audio program to YouTube; for a single stream that runs continuously for more than 12 hours, plan a local recording because YouTube says the broadcast may not be captured at all. To go live, create or schedule a YouTube stream, put its private stream key into OBS, configure a tested output profile, and rehearse the full audio, video and network path before service.

First decide what “continuous” means

A recurring Sunday service and one uninterrupted, always-on broadcast are different setups. For a scheduled service, create a separate YouTube event as needed and start OBS before the service. For one extended broadcast, account for YouTube’s archive limit: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube Help’s archive guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends treating that as an archival risk, not a guaranteed cutoff behavior. Record locally if preserving the full program matters.

OBS sends the program assembled in its scenes to YouTube; it does not replace the church’s cameras, switcher, audio console or capture path. Map the actual signal chain—camera or switcher, capture device if used, console audio, OBS sources and final scene—before choosing settings. Equipment needs depend on that existing chain.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Review the event’s visibility, title and scheduled time before sharing its watch page.
  2. Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as functioning like a password for the feed; do not publish it, send it in public chat or include it in screenshots. YouTube’s stream settings guidance explains these values and custom stream keys.
  3. In OBS, go to Settings → Stream, select YouTube, and connect the account or enter the stream key. Keep the key in OBS rather than in notes or shared documents accessible to people who do not operate the stream.
  4. If the key may have been exposed, have a channel owner or manager reset it in YouTube’s stream settings, then update OBS with the replacement before going live.

Configure OBS output for a church service

Match the canvas and output to the sources

In Settings → Video, choose a canvas that matches the church’s production layout. For a conventional landscape HD service, 16:9 is a practical default; set the output resolution to the resolution you intend to send, rather than upscaling a lower-resolution camera feed without a reason. A fixed-camera service will often be adequately represented at 30 fps. These are practical starting points, not YouTube requirements; use 60 fps only when the source and motion benefit from it and the encoder and network can sustain it.

Set encoder, rate control and keyframes

In Settings → Output, use Advanced output mode when you need distinct streaming and recording encoder settings. YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends CBR rate control, a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and RTMPS. For a straightforward H.264 setup, set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Select an encoder the computer can handle reliably; software encoding uses the CPU, while hardware encoding offloads work to specialized GPU hardware. OBS notes that older hardware encoders may produce lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate, so test the actual picture rather than assuming one is always better.

Use YouTube’s H.264 ingest figures as targets for the selected resolution and frame rate, not as guarantees of uninterrupted service:

H.264 output YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s current H.264 values for the stated ingest modes, accessed October 3, 2026. Other supported codecs have different guidance. A relatively static sanctuary shot may work well at 720p30 when bandwidth or hardware is limited; check the actual image and motion in a private rehearsal before choosing it for a public service.

Set and listen to the audio

For stereo worship audio, AAC at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate are YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS baseline. Confirm that OBS receives the intended console mix and listen to the resulting stream, not only the room sound. A camera microphone may not capture the congregation, speech and music balance represented by the house mix.

Make the connection reliable enough for the chosen bitrate

Test upload capacity at the streaming location and at a time comparable to service, including normal network use by staff and attendees. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; its guidance for simultaneous primary and backup streams says to allow primary plus backup plus 20%. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance suggests bitrate around 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Use the more conservative capacity estimate if the connection varies or is shared. The total stream bitrate includes audio as well as video.

  • Prefer a wired Ethernet connection when possible, especially if Wi-Fi is unstable. A cable can address a weak wireless link, but cannot fix an overloaded network, poor ISP service or a bitrate set beyond available capacity.
  • If the measured connection cannot sustain the chosen profile, reduce the bitrate or choose a lower output resolution or frame rate, then rehearse again.
  • Check whether other network users, VPNs, security software, drivers or the selected streaming server are affecting the connection.
  • Keep video movement and framing in mind: a mostly static sanctuary may need less resolution or frame rate than a service with frequent camera motion, but the decision should be based on a test.

Rehearse and run a pre-service check

YouTube Help’s streaming tips, accessed October 3, 2026, recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. OBS’s overview guide likewise advises testing the complete setup before a first stream.

  1. Start OBS and confirm that every camera, graphic, video source and audio input appears in the intended scene.
  2. Start the encoder stream early enough for the YouTube Live Control Room preview to appear. Verify that the preview has both picture and sound.
  3. Check the watch page using the intended visibility setting, including a phone or other viewer device. Confirm that the stream is accessible to the people who should watch it.
  4. Speak, play representative music and switch between the scenes the service will use. Listen for clipping, missing channels, delay or an unexpectedly quiet console mix; check that text and lower-thirds are readable on a small screen.
  5. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and OBS status throughout the rehearsal and service. Confirm the local recording is enabled and its file size is growing.
  6. Write down who will restart OBS or network equipment if the stream fails, and how the service proceeds if the online broadcast cannot be restored. Where a second encoder is available, rehearse failover rather than assuming it will work.

Save a recoverable OBS setup

Use an OBS Profile for stream and output settings, and save the Scene Collection separately for the production layout. Profiles do not contain scenes. Keep a known-good profile and export or back up both components so the team can restore settings and scenes separately after a computer change or OBS reinstall. Store the stream key securely; do not treat a scene or profile backup as a safe place to share credentials.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
OBS is live, but YouTube has no preview Incorrect stream key or URL, wrong event selected, or encoder not connected Compare the OBS stream settings with the active YouTube event. Re-enter the current key privately and check Live Control Room for connection status.
Dropped frames or an unstable stream Upload capacity varies, bitrate is too high, or Wi-Fi/network conditions are unstable Use a wired connection where possible, check concurrent network use, and reduce bitrate until it is sustainable. OBS recommends checking the server, VPN/security software and drivers as well.
Video appears but audio is missing or poor Wrong OBS audio source, muted input, unsuitable console feed or levels Inspect OBS audio meters during a representative sound check, verify the console feed and routing, and listen on the YouTube preview or watch page.
OBS stops streaming after a brief interruption Connection loss or reconnect behavior not configured Enable automatic reconnect in OBS under Settings → Advanced, then test recovery before service. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
The broadcast has no complete YouTube archive The stream exceeded 12 hours or archive capture otherwise failed Do not rely on YouTube to preserve a program longer than 12 hours; maintain and verify a local recording.
Local recording does not appear or grow Recording was not started, destination or disk space is wrong, or the recording encoder failed Check OBS recording status, destination path and available storage during preflight; verify the file is increasing before the service begins.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel that loops pre-recorded church video rather than a live camera-and-mixer service, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the recording or make a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded-video looping, not going live from a camera, and StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
