What you are building
An OpenLDAP deployment has two distinct parts:
- Server configuration: listeners, schemas, indexes, TLS settings, logging, and access rules stored in the dynamic configuration directory
cn=config. - Directory data: the base entry, organizational units, users, groups, and application attributes stored below your naming context, such as
dc=example,dc=com.
Ubuntu Server describes OpenLDAP as “the open-source implementation of LDAP used in Ubuntu.” The package gives you a functioning minimal instance, but it does not make production decisions for you: DNS naming, certificate trust, ACL design, backups, and delegated administrator identities still need to be planned.
Make the important decisions before installation
Choose a DNS name and suffix
Use a DNS name that clients will actually resolve, for example ldap01.example.com. Choose a real DNS-based suffix such as dc=example,dc=com rather than leaving the package’s demonstration value in place. The suffix becomes part of every distinguished name (DN), including the administrator DN and every user or group entry.

If the suffix is wrong and the directory contains no useful data yet, you can rerun the Debian package configuration:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure slapd
Ubuntu warns that changing the suffix discards the existing database. Make this choice before importing users, groups, or application records; changing it later is a migration, not a harmless setting change.
Recommended Free Tools
Decide which network paths will exist
- 389/tcp: LDAP, normally used with StartTLS after the connection is established.
- 636/tcp: LDAPS, where TLS starts immediately when the client connects.
- ldapi:///: a local Unix-domain connection commonly used for privileged administration with SASL EXTERNAL.
Restrict firewall exposure to the clients that need it. Keep ldapi:/// available for local break-glass administration even if remote administrative binds are disabled.
Record the initial administrator identity
The package creates an administrator DN during setup. Keep that identity for recovery, but do not make it the credential used by every person or application. Plan named delegated accounts for routine work and service accounts for applications.
Install OpenLDAP on Ubuntu or Debian
Install the daemon and command-line tools
sudo apt update
sudo apt install slapd ldap-utils
The package creates a minimal configuration, a database instance, and an administrator DN. During the package questions, enter the DNS-based domain and administrator password you selected. If you need to revisit those choices before loading data, run sudo dpkg-reconfigure slapd.
Set client defaults only after replacing the examples
Once your hostname and suffix are final, set defaults in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf:
BASE dc=example,dc=com
URI ldap://ldap01.example.com
These defaults affect command-line clients that do not specify their own base or URI. They do not change the server’s suffix. For sensitive operations, specify the URI and bind DN explicitly so an accidental default cannot send credentials to the wrong host.
Check that the service is running
sudo systemctl status slapd
sudo ss -ltnp | grep slapd
Confirm which listeners are enabled before opening a firewall port. A service listening only on a local socket is not ready for remote application binds; a service listening on an unencrypted network URI should not receive passwords.
Understand cn=config and directory data
Inspect the dynamic configuration database
cn=config is itself an LDAP tree. It contains listener settings, TLS paths, schemas, indexes, log levels, and database access rules. Local root administration commonly uses SASL EXTERNAL over ldapi:///:

sudo ldapsearch -Q -LLL -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -b cn=config
Use this local method for configuration changes instead of editing generated files by hand. A change made to the wrong database can leave the directory data untouched while still breaking the daemon.

Recognize the directory data tree
Your suffix, for example dc=example,dc=com, is a separate database containing organizational units, users, and groups. Remote data operations should use an explicit bind DN and a TLS-protected URI. Keep passwords out of shell history where practical; the -W option prompts for a password rather than placing it in the command line.
Identify database numbering before backup or maintenance
OpenLDAP installations can have different database numbers. Before using database-specific maintenance commands, inspect the configured databases:
sudo ldapsearch -Q -LLL -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:///
-b cn=config '(objectClass=olcDatabaseConfig)' olcDatabase olcSuffix
Use the returned suffix and database identifier when documenting exports, restore procedures, or index changes.
Create the base entries with LDIF
Write a base LDIF file
Create base.ldif with a base entry and organizational units. Adapt the object classes and attributes to your naming and schema:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →dn: dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: top
objectClass: dcObject
objectClass: organization
dc: example
o: Example Organization
dn: ou=People,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: organizationalUnit
ou: People
dn: ou=Groups,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: organizationalUnit
ou: Groups
LDIF is line-oriented: the blank line separates entries, and the DN identifies the entry being created. Keep LDIF in version control without passwords, private keys, or generated secrets.
Import the base tree
ldapadd -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W -f base.ldif
The command uses simple authentication (-x) over LDAPS, prompts for the administrator password (-W), and reads entries from the file. If your clients use StartTLS instead, use an ldap:// URI with -ZZ and verify the certificate before importing.
Verify every entry
ldapsearch -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W
-b 'dc=example,dc=com' '(objectClass=*)' dn
Check that the base and both organizational units are present. An import that reports “already exists” is not necessarily a failure: it may mean the entry was created by an earlier attempt. Search before retrying so you do not mask a typo in the DN or suffix.
Perform repeatable administration with LDAP tools
Add users and groups
Create a separate LDIF file for each logical change. A user entry must use object classes and attributes supplied by schemas loaded on your server; do not copy an application’s required classes without verifying that the corresponding schema is installed. A group entry likewise depends on the group schema and its membership attribute.

Import the change with the same authenticated, protected connection:
ldapadd -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W -f user-or-group.ldif
For bulk onboarding, generate deterministic LDIF and apply it in small batches. A failed batch is easier to inspect and roll back than an untracked stream of individual commands.
Search before changing anything
ldapsearch -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W
-b 'ou=People,dc=example,dc=com'
'(uid=alice)' dn cn sn mail
Use a narrow base DN and filter. Confirm the exact DN before modifying or deleting an entry, especially when an attribute value is not unique.
Modify attributes with a change set
ldapmodify applies an LDIF change set rather than replacing the entire entry. A typical change file has the form below; substitute an attribute that your schema permits:
dn: uid=alice,ou=People,dc=example,dc=com
changetype: modify
replace: mail
mail: [email protected]
Apply it with:
ldapmodify -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W -f change.ldif
Use add when an attribute is absent, delete when removing a value, and replace when setting the complete value set. Validate the result with ldapsearch; schema and ACL errors are easier to distinguish when the change is small.
Delete only after checking references
ldapdelete -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W
'uid=alice,ou=People,dc=example,dc=com'
Check group membership, application references, and dependent entries first. Deleting a parent organizational unit before its children can also fail or leave an incomplete cleanup. Record the change and retain the pre-change search result when the entry is operationally important.
Manage schemas deliberately
Ubuntu’s documentation defines a schema as the structure and data types of object classes available in the LDAP tree. Schemas control which object classes, attributes, syntaxes, and matching rules entries may use.
Converted LDIF schemas can be added directly to cn=config. For example, Ubuntu documents:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemssudo ldapadd -Q -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:///
-f /etc/ldap/schema/corba.ldif
Do not add a custom schema casually on a production VPS. First test it on a disposable instance, confirm the matching rules and indexes required by clients, and document every object class applications will create. Removing a schema is not a routine undo operation; plan a migration before deployment and keep the exact LDIF under change control.

Design ACLs and administrator identities
Start with an access matrix
| Identity | Typical need | What to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Anonymous users | Usually none, or a narrowly defined public search | Whether any attributes may be read without authentication |
| Authenticated users | Self-service reads or profile updates | Which attributes are visible and whether users may change their own values |
| Application service accounts | Search and limited reads, sometimes writes | Exact base DN, attributes, and write operations |
| Help-desk operators | Specific user lookups or resets | Which records they may modify and which sensitive attributes remain hidden |
| Directory administrators | Full operational management | Named accounts, approval, logging, and emergency access |
Keep the directory manager or root DN for break-glass work. Use named delegated accounts for routine tasks so audit records identify a person or service rather than a shared credential.
Review rule ordering
ACL evaluation is order-sensitive: an earlier rule can prevent a later rule from taking effect. Make the ordering part of your change review, not an afterthought. Test reads, searches, adds, modifies, and deletes with each role against a non-production copy before applying a policy to live data.

Protect LDAP traffic with TLS
Prepare certificates and file permissions
Obtain a certificate whose DNS name matches the VPS hostname clients use, such as ldap.example.com. The slapd process must be able to read the certificate, private key, and any intermediate CA file. Protect the private key so only the service account can read it, and verify that directory permissions do not block the daemon from traversing the path.
Configure TLS in cn=config
Apply the certificate paths through a local EXTERNAL-authenticated modification:
dn: cn=config
changetype: modify
replace: olcTLSCertificateFile
olcTLSCertificateFile: /etc/ssl/certs/ldap.example.com.pem
-
replace: olcTLSCertificateKeyFile
olcTLSCertificateKeyFile: /etc/ssl/private/ldap.example.com.key
-
replace: olcTLSCACertificateFile
olcTLSCACertificateFile: /etc/ssl/certs/ca-chain.pem
Save that text as a file and apply it:
sudo ldapmodify -Q -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f tls.ldif
Restart the service if your distribution requires it after changing listener or certificate settings, then inspect the service status and logs for permission or parsing errors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Test StartTLS with certificate verification
LDAPTLS_CACERT=/etc/ssl/certs/ca.pem
ldapwhoami -H ldap://ldap.example.com -ZZ -x
-ZZ requires StartTLS to succeed; the command fails rather than silently continuing in plaintext. The CA file must trust the issuing chain, and the certificate’s subject alternative name must match the hostname in the URI.
Enable LDAPS when clients require it
Debian documents enabling ldaps:/// on port 636 through the SLAPD_SERVICES setting and restarting slapd. Use either StartTLS or LDAPS according to client support, but standardize the choice in your deployment record. Once every client has migrated, reject plaintext binds and close unnecessary firewall access to unencrypted LDAP.
You can enforce a minimum security strength such as ssf=128 through olcSecurity, but first confirm that local ldapi:/// administration has a sufficient olcLocalSSF value. Otherwise, a policy intended for remote protection can lock out the local recovery path.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Logging and troubleshooting
Enable statistics logging while diagnosing
Ubuntu documents this dynamic configuration change:
dn: cn=config
changetype: modify
replace: olcLogLevel
olcLogLevel: stats
Apply it and follow the service journal:
sudo ldapmodify -Q -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f logging.ldif
sudo journalctl -eu slapd.service
Use verbose logging temporarily when investigating binds, schema violations, ACL denials, or TLS negotiation. Return to a lower level after the incident because statistics logging can be noisy.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| Symptom | Checks | Likely corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Connection refused | systemctl status slapd, listener output, firewall rules, and ports 389/636 |
Start the service or correct listener and firewall configuration |
| TLS hostname error | URI hostname versus certificate SAN | Use the certificate name or issue a certificate containing the client-facing DNS name |
| Certificate trust failure | CA file and intermediate chain | Point the client at the trusted CA chain and verify the server sends required intermediates |
| Permission denied reading a key | Certificate and private-key ownership and path traversal permissions | Grant the daemon read access without making the key world-readable |
| Invalid credentials | Exact bind DN, password, and whether the client is using the intended suffix | Correct the DN or rotate the credential through a controlled process |
| Insufficient access | ACL order, target DN, requested attribute, and authenticated identity | Adjust the least-privilege rule after testing it on a non-production copy |
| Object-class or attribute error | Loaded schemas and required attributes | Use a supported object class or test and load the required schema |
Also check whether a client accidentally uses an unencrypted URI. A successful bind is not evidence that the connection was protected; confirm the URI and TLS negotiation explicitly.
Back up and restore the whole service
Back up both configuration and data
A data-only export cannot recreate listeners, schemas, TLS paths, logging, or ACLs. Your backup set must include:
- The directory data under the suffix, including users, groups, and application entries.
- The complete
cn=configtree. - The certificate, private-key, and CA-chain handling procedure, stored separately from unencrypted secrets.
- The OpenLDAP and distribution versions used to create the backup.
- Retention, encryption, off-host storage, and the identity responsible for restoration.
Use an LDAP export or the server’s offline export tooling appropriate to each database, and record the database identifiers discovered under cn=config. Do not assume that exporting the suffix also captures configuration.

- Provision an isolated VPS with the documented Ubuntu or Debian version.

- Start

A backup is unproven until this isolated restore succeeds. Record the elapsed time, failures, and corrective steps in the recovery runbook.
Document the deployment for handoff
Keep a concise operational record containing:
- Ubuntu or Debian release and OpenLDAP package version.
- VPS hostname, DNS records, IPv4/IPv6 addresses, and firewall rules.
- Suffix, administrator DN, delegated identities, and service-account owners.
- Enabled listeners and the chosen StartTLS or LDAPS client policy.
- Certificate issuer, expiration monitoring owner, CA-chain location, and key-permission procedure.
- Schema files, indexes, ACL change history, and the application object classes in use.
- Backup schedule, encryption method, retention, off-host destination, and last successful restore date.
This record prevents a future administrator from treating a certificate renewal, suffix change, schema addition, or ACL edit as an isolated one-line change.
Deployment choices to settle explicitly
| Decision | Option A | Option B | What to document |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distribution | Ubuntu package defaults | Debian package defaults | Release, package version, service paths, and listener configuration |
| Encrypted client transport | StartTLS on LDAP | LDAPS on port 636 | Client compatibility, CA trust method, and plaintext rejection policy |
| Administration path | Local-only EXTERNAL over ldapi:/// |
Remote delegated binds over protected LDAP | Firewall scope, named operators, and break-glass procedure |
| Backup scope | Data export only | Data plus cn=config |
Choose the second option for a recoverable service |
| Privilege model | Single manager DN | Delegated ACLs and service accounts | Access matrix, rule order, review owner, and test results |
| Topology | Single VPS | Replicated directory | Failure objectives, replication design, monitoring owner, and restore target |
For a single VPS, the minimum safe baseline is a final suffix, protected client transport, least-privilege ACLs, monitored logs, and a tested backup that includes both data and configuration. Only then should applications be allowed to bind to the directory.
