On a PS5, start by creating a PlayStation family and adding the child account. Then open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, select the child, and set Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. The limit is 0 by default, and purchases made on a child account use the family manager’s wallet. PlayStation also provides web and mobile management. Xbox has an official “Approve child purchases” feature area, but the exact console and mobile instructions, defaults, and regional behavior could not be verified from the available Xbox support material, so this guide does not invent them.
What you need before configuring a child account
Parental controls are attached to the child’s account and family relationship, not merely to the console. On PlayStation, a parent or guardian must create a family and add the child as a family member before changing controls. If the child is using an ordinary adult account, the PS5 will not treat that account as a supervised child account.

- A parent account with family-manager authority.
- A separate PlayStation account for the child.
- The child added to the parent’s PlayStation family.
- Access to the PS5, or to PlayStation’s web Account Management or Family app for remote changes.
Use the child’s own sign-in when checking the result. A restriction configured for one family member does not automatically configure every account that can use the console. Before changing anything, identify which account the child actually uses for games and which account is used at checkout. That simple check prevents a correctly configured family setting from being tested against the wrong profile.

1. Sign in with the parent account
Use the account that will manage the family and pay for any permitted PlayStation Store purchases. This account becomes the family manager for the relevant child account. Keep its sign-in details private; handing the parent account to the child defeats the separation that makes the controls useful.

2. Add the child as a family member
Complete the family setup and add the child’s PlayStation account before attempting to configure age, communication, playtime, or spending controls. PlayStation’s parental-control documentation treats family membership as the prerequisite for these settings. If the child does not yet have an account, create the child account through the family setup rather than using the parent’s profile for everyday play.
3. Confirm that the child appears in Family Management
On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. The child should appear as a selectable family member. If the account is not listed, stop here and finish the family setup rather than changing settings on the wrong account. Families with more than one child should check each profile individually, since the spending amount and other controls are selected per child.
PS5: set the monthly spending limit
Use the exact console path
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Family and Parental Controls.
- Choose Family Management.
- Select the child’s account.
- Open Parental Controls.
- Select Monthly Spending Limit.
- Enter the amount you want that child account to be able to spend during the month, then confirm the change.
The available PlayStation documentation identifies 0 as the default monthly spending limit. Leaving the value at zero prevents the child account from using the family manager’s wallet for permitted PlayStation Store purchases. If you intend to allow any child-account spending, review this setting instead of assuming that adding the child to the family has enabled purchases.

Set the amount separately for every child who needs a different allowance. The control is associated with the selected child, so changing one profile is not a shortcut for changing siblings’ profiles. Keep a note of the amount you chose and review it whenever the family’s purchasing rules change.
How PlayStation child-account spending is funded
When a child buys PlayStation Store content on the child’s account, payment is taken from the family manager’s wallet. The child is not using an independent wallet balance under the arrangement described by PlayStation’s support documentation.
| Item | Established behavior | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Default monthly limit | 0 | Review the limit if child-account purchases are intended. |
| Payment source for a child’s PlayStation Store purchase | Family manager’s wallet | Keep only the funding methods you are prepared to make available through that wallet. |
| Setting location | Selected child > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit | Choose the child before changing the amount. |
| Documented purchase scope | PlayStation Store content bought on the child’s account | Do not treat this setting as proof that every external or in-game payment route is blocked. |
The limit is a spending cap for the documented child-account PlayStation Store flow. It is not described as a universal lock on every transaction a game might offer. A game can involve an external account, a separate publisher billing system, or another payment route. For that reason, parents should identify where a particular game presents its purchase screen instead of assuming that the PS5 limit covers every offer shown inside every title.

This wallet arrangement also explains why the family manager should review stored payment methods and wallet balance before enabling a non-zero amount. The support instructions establish who pays, but they do not promise that a particular card, voucher, or third-party billing method will be handled identically in every game. Treat the monthly setting as one layer of protection, then inspect the checkout path for games the child uses.

Set the other PS5 controls separately
Monthly spending and the rest of the family controls solve different problems. PlayStation lists additional categories that can be configured for a child:
- Age-based game and content access: restricts material according to the child’s age settings.
- Communications: controls communication features with other players.
- Privacy: manages what the child can share and who can interact with the account.
- Playtime: sets limits around when and how long the child can play.
Open the child’s profile inside Family Management and choose the specific parental-control category you want to change. Setting the monthly amount to zero does not replace age, communication, privacy, or playtime controls, and enabling those controls does not establish a spending amount. Configure each category deliberately.
It is useful to treat the categories as a checklist rather than a single “parental control” switch. A family may want a zero spending limit but still permit age-appropriate games, or allow a small store allowance while restricting communications. The settings can address those different goals independently.
Make sure a change has taken effect
PlayStation says these controls are linked to the account. If you change a setting while the child is playing, have the child sign out of the PlayStation account and sign back in. This refreshes the account’s applied settings. Simply leaving the game open can make it appear that a new restriction has failed when the session has not yet reloaded the account configuration.
- Change the setting while signed in as the family manager.
- Ask the child to save progress safely and sign out of the child account.
- Sign back in to the child account.
- Test the relevant behavior with the child present, especially before allowing unsupervised purchases.
Test the same route the child will use in practice. For a spending change, that means checking a PlayStation Store purchase screen on the child account, not merely opening the game on the parent profile. For a communication or age setting, test the affected feature while signed in as the child.

Manage PS5 controls from the web or phone
PlayStation lists two alternatives to changing settings at the console: Account Management on the web and the PlayStation Family app. The app is described as a free way to manage family settings, including spending and playtime, age restrictions, and responses to certain requests from a child.
When remote management is useful
- You need to change a limit while away from the console.
- You want to review playtime or age restrictions without interrupting a game.
- A child has sent a request that the app supports you responding to.
- You manage more than one child and want each account’s settings in one family view.
Remote management does not change the underlying account relationship: the child must already belong to the family, and the family manager must make the change. After changing a setting remotely, use the sign-out-and-sign-in step if the child is currently playing. If a label looks different in the app or web account area, confirm that you are viewing the same family and child profile before troubleshooting the console.
What the PS5 spending limit does—and does not—promise
What it does
- Sets a monthly amount for the selected child account’s documented PlayStation Store purchases.
- Uses the family manager’s wallet when such a child-account purchase is made.
- Starts at zero unless the family manager changes the value.
What it does not establish by itself
- That every child account on the console has the same limit.
- That age, communication, privacy, or playtime restrictions have been configured.
- That every in-game purchase uses the PlayStation Store child-account flow.
- That an external publisher account or third-party billing page is controlled by this PS5 setting.
For a game with several account systems, check which account displays the checkout screen and which wallet or payment method it uses. The PlayStation documentation specifically describes purchases of PlayStation Store content on a child account; it does not state that the monthly limit governs every third-party payment flow.
PS5 versus Xbox: what can be compared safely
| Comparison point | PS5 | Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Family prerequisite | Create a PlayStation family and add the child. | A child-purchase approval feature is identified, but the family setup steps are not verified here. |
| Console route | Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, then select the child. | Current menu names were not exposed by the verified support result. |
| Spending behavior | Monthly spending amount; default is 0. | It is not confirmed whether the current feature is an approval gate, a cap, or both. |
| Funding | Child PlayStation Store purchases use the family manager’s wallet. | Funding behavior still requires confirmation. |
| Remote management | Web Account Management and the PlayStation Family app are listed. | Current web and mobile routes are not confirmed. |
| In-game scope | Documentation specifically covers PlayStation Store content on the child account; external billing is not established. | Coverage of in-game purchases is not established. |
This comparison is intentionally uneven. It gives you a verified PS5 procedure without turning an Xbox feature title into guessed instructions. Xbox families should use the current support page for their country and account type before changing purchase settings.
Xbox: what is verified and what still needs confirmation
An official Xbox Support result titled “Approve child purchases” confirms that Xbox has a child-purchase approval feature area. However, the indexed page content available for this guide did not expose the instructions. It therefore does not establish the Xbox menu names, default behavior, spending amounts, mobile-app route, web route, or the precise way approvals apply to in-game purchases.
The surfaced support result was localized to Sweden. Xbox support pages and account features can vary by region, so a Swedish result should not be treated as universal instructions for every country.

Do not infer an Xbox setup path
It would be unsafe to present a guessed sequence such as a particular console menu, a Microsoft family URL, an approval toggle, or a default spending value as verified Xbox guidance. Those details must come from the current Xbox support page for the family’s region and account type.
Verify these points before configuring Xbox
- How to add the child account to a Microsoft family.
- The current Xbox console path for content, communication, and purchase controls.
- Whether the purchase feature is an approval gate, a spending cap, or both.
- Who funds an approved purchase and where the payment method is stored.
- Whether settings can be changed through a current mobile app, the web, or both.
- Whether approval or spending rules cover in-game purchases as well as digital-store purchases.
- Whether the instructions and feature availability differ in the family’s country or region.
Until those points are confirmed in current regional Xbox documentation, treat the PS5 procedure in this article as the complete, verified setup and the Xbox section as a scope warning—not as a substitute for official Xbox instructions.

The child can still buy after you changed the limit
- Confirm that you edited the intended child account, not the parent account or another family member.
- Check that the monthly value is the one you intended; the default is zero, but a family manager can change it.
- Have the child sign out and back in if the change was made while the child was playing.
- Identify whether the checkout is a PlayStation Store purchase on the child account. The documented limit does not automatically prove coverage of an external payment route.
The child sees no available spending
A zero limit is the expected default. If you want the child to make permitted PlayStation Store purchases, the family manager must choose a non-zero monthly amount and ensure the family manager’s wallet is the intended funding source.
The wrong restrictions are being applied
Review the selected family member and the individual control category. Spending, age access, communications, privacy, and playtime are separate settings. Changing one category does not configure the others.
The app or web change is not visible on the console
Refresh the child’s account session by signing out and back in. Also check that the remote change was made in the same family and for the same child account used on the PS5.

A parent’s final pre-purchase checklist
- The child has a separate account and appears in the PlayStation family.
- The monthly spending amount is intentional, with zero retained if no child-account purchases are allowed.
- You understand that permitted purchases draw on the family manager’s wallet.
- Age, communication, privacy, and playtime settings have been reviewed independently of spending.
- The child has signed out and back in after any change made during play.
- You have checked whether a game uses the PlayStation Store account or an external payment flow.
- For Xbox, you have confirmed current regional instructions instead of relying on an inferred menu path.
PlayStation’s support pages and Family app information were current support material accessed on October 13, 2026; exact publication dates were not shown. Menu labels and app availability can change, so compare the labels on the console or current regional support page when completing setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the default PS5 monthly spending limit for a child account?
PlayStation identifies the default as 0. A family manager must change the amount before the child account can make permitted PlayStation Store purchases using the family manager’s wallet.
Which wallet pays for a child’s PlayStation Store purchase?
PlayStation says payment is taken from the family manager’s wallet when the child buys PlayStation Store content on the child’s account.
Does setting the PS5 limit to zero block every purchase in every game?
Not necessarily. The documented setting covers PlayStation Store content bought on the child account. External publisher accounts and third-party billing routes are not established as covered by the monthly limit.
Can I manage PS5 parental controls from a phone?
Yes. PlayStation lists the PlayStation Family app for managing spending, playtime, age restrictions and certain child requests. Web Account Management is also listed.
Why did a PS5 control not take effect immediately?
If the child was playing when you changed the setting, have the child sign out of the PlayStation account and sign back in so the account-linked control refreshes.
Are Xbox purchase-approval steps the same as PS5 steps?
Do not assume that. An official Xbox support result identifies an “Approve child purchases” feature area, but the exact menus, defaults, funding behavior, mobile or web route and in-game scope require current regional Xbox verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
For PS5, create the family first, add the child, then use Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management to set the selected child’s Monthly Spending Limit. The default is 0, and permitted PlayStation Store purchases use the family manager’s wallet. Configure age, communication, privacy and playtime controls separately, and have the child sign out and back in after changes. Xbox has an official child-purchase approval area, but use current regional Xbox instructions rather than guessing the setup path or purchase coverage.
