What the PayPal identity token does
A PayPal identity token authenticates the payment data that PayPal sends back to your store after a customer completes checkout. It belongs to PayPal’s Payment Data Transfer (PDT) feature, not to the newer PayPal Payments integration.

WooCommerce labels the token as optional and says it is required only when you have signed up for PDT. In a legacy PayPal Standard installation, WooCommerce can use PDT to verify a transaction when an IPN message has not arrived or cannot be processed. IPN is an asynchronous server-to-server notification; PDT is tied to the customer’s return from PayPal. They solve different delivery problems, so entering a token does not automatically remove the need to keep IPN working if your store depends on IPN notifications.
The token is not a customer-facing value and should never be placed in a product description, checkout field, theme file, JavaScript bundle, or public support article. Treat it as a private payment-configuration credential and limit access to WordPress administrators who manage payments.

Check whether this procedure applies to your store
Use it for an existing PayPal Standard gateway
These instructions are for a store that already has the legacy PayPal Standard gateway available in its WooCommerce payment settings. The setting may appear under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > PayPal. Older WooCommerce documentation may show WooCommerce > Settings > Checkout > PayPal instead.
Do not build a new store around PayPal Standard
WooCommerce has hidden PayPal Standard from new installations since version 5.5.0. The bundled gateway and its opt-in filter were removed in WooCommerce 8.9 in May 2024. WooCommerce’s June 2026 retirement advisory says PayPal Standard is being retired and may be automatically disabled and hidden after a merchant connects PayPal Payments 4.1.0.

For a new store, or for a planned modernization, use the current WooCommerce PayPal Payments onboarding rather than adding a new dependency on PDT and the legacy gateway. PayPal’s upgrade guidance also points merchants toward the latest WooCommerce PayPal Payments extension or PayPal Expanded Checkout. The identity-token field is relevant when you are maintaining a legacy installation, not when you are configuring the modern integration.
Prerequisites before you enter the token
- PayPal Business account: PayPal Standard setup requires a Business account, not a personal account.
- Administrator access: You need permission to change the PayPal account’s Website Preferences and the WooCommerce payment settings.
- Correct environment: Decide whether you are configuring a live account or a PayPal Sandbox account. Never test a new configuration with live money.
- Matching account details: Know the PayPal account email that should receive the funds and the receiver email configured in WooCommerce.
- Reachable callbacks: Your site must allow PayPal’s IPN requests to reach WooCommerce if you rely on IPN for order updates.
For the modern PayPal Payments onboarding, you create or connect a PayPal account, link financial information as required, and complete account verification. That process is separate from generating a PDT token.

How to generate a PayPal identity token
- Sign in to the PayPal Business account that receives payments from this WooCommerce store.
- Open the account’s Website Preferences. PayPal changes dashboard navigation periodically, and labels can differ by account interface and region; look for the website-payment or payment-return settings if the menu wording is different.
- Enable Payment Data Transfer.
- Save the preference. PayPal then displays an identity token.
- Copy the token exactly as shown and store it temporarily in a secure password manager or other restricted location while you complete the WooCommerce configuration.
Do not copy a token from a different PayPal account or from a different environment. A live-account token and a Sandbox token are not interchangeable.
Where to enter the token in WooCommerce
- In WordPress, open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments.
- Select PayPal and open the PayPal Standard settings. On older versions, use WooCommerce > Settings > Checkout > PayPal.
- Find the field named PayPal Identity Token.
- Paste the token without adding spaces or changing its capitalization.
- Review the PayPal email and receiver email fields, then select Save changes.
If the PayPal Standard method or identity-token field is missing, check the WooCommerce version and installed gateway extensions before changing code. A missing field can mean that the store no longer includes the legacy gateway, rather than that the token is invalid.

PayPal and receiver email
The PayPal email in WooCommerce should identify the account intended to receive the order. The receiver email should also match that account unless you have a deliberate, documented multi-account arrangement. A mismatch can result in a payment being sent to one account while WooCommerce is expecting confirmation for another.
Payment Data Transfer and IPN
PDT requires the customer to return to your store after paying. IPN sends a separate notification from PayPal to your site. Keep IPN configured if your order workflow, stock reduction, subscription logic, or status updates depend on it. The identity token gives WooCommerce an additional way to verify the returned transaction when IPN has problems; it is not a general replacement for every IPN-based process.

Sandbox versus live mode
WooCommerce’s sandbox mode does not take live payment. It requires a separate PayPal Sandbox account, and the Sandbox email, receiver email, and API credentials must all belong to the same Sandbox account. Do not mix a live merchant email with Sandbox credentials or vice versa.
Test the complete payment flow before going live
- Create or select the PayPal Sandbox buyer and seller accounts you will use for the test.
- Enable sandbox mode in the PayPal Standard settings and enter the corresponding Sandbox credentials and email addresses.
- Place a test order from a customer account or an incognito browser session. Follow the redirect to PayPal, complete the Sandbox payment, and return to the store.
- Confirm that WooCommerce records the PayPal transaction ID, calculates the expected total, and moves the order to the status your workflow expects.
- Check that the PDT return is accepted and that an IPN notification is received if IPN is enabled.
- Review the WooCommerce PayPal logs for errors, then repeat a refund or cancellation test if those actions are part of your operations.
- Only after the Sandbox flow succeeds, switch to the live account, disable sandbox mode, enter the live settings, and place a small controlled live transaction.
A successful browser return alone is not proof that the server-side notification path works. Test both the customer return and the order-status update that follows it.
Why a WooCommerce order can remain on hold
When a customer says PayPal accepted the payment but WooCommerce still shows On hold, start with the transaction record and logs rather than manually marking the order complete. The order may be waiting for a notification, or WooCommerce may have rejected the notification because the account details do not match.

Callback and IPN troubleshooting checklist
1. Read the WooCommerce PayPal logs
Enable or open the gateway’s logging tools and inspect the entry for the affected order. Look for the PayPal transaction ID, receiver email, response status, and any message about token validation or notification rejection. Compare a failed order with a successful Sandbox order rather than guessing at settings.

2. Verify the callback can be reached
PayPal must be able to connect to the callback URL from outside your network. Maintenance mode, password protection, a web-application firewall, restrictive security rules, DNS problems, or a host that blocks incoming requests can prevent IPN from arriving. Ask the hosting administrator to check blocked requests and server errors at the time of the transaction.
3. Exclude payment callbacks from aggressive caching
Page caching is useful for catalog pages but can interfere with a dynamic payment callback. Exclude the PayPal return and notification endpoints from full-page caching and ensure that a security plugin is not rewriting or requiring a browser challenge on those requests.
4. Compare every account identifier
Check the PayPal account email, receiver email, Sandbox/live mode, API credentials, and identity token as a set. A single value copied from another environment can produce a pending or unilateral status even when the checkout redirect appears normal.
5. Re-test after correcting one variable
Change one setting, place a fresh Sandbox order, and inspect the new log entry. Reusing an old transaction can hide whether the correction worked because PayPal will not necessarily replay the original notification in the same way.

PayPal Standard versus WooCommerce PayPal Payments
The two integrations differ in both capability and maintenance risk. PayPal Standard is a redirect-based legacy gateway that depends on PDT/IPN configuration. PayPal Payments is the recommended current integration with guided account onboarding and a broader feature set.

WooCommerce’s own guidance is direct: “We strongly encourage everyone using PayPal Standard to use the recommended PayPal Payments extension instead, which is our full-stack solution (credit card processing, PayPal checkout, subscriptions, pay later options, etc.).”
When to keep the identity-token setup
- Keep it when an established store still exposes PayPal Standard and changing gateways would require a scheduled migration.
- Keep it when you need PDT as a fallback while diagnosing IPN delivery problems.
- Document the PayPal account, environment, token location, IPN endpoint, and last successful test so another administrator can maintain the store.
- Use Sandbox for every configuration change that could affect order status before touching the live gateway.
Do not interpret a working token as evidence that PayPal Standard will remain available indefinitely. The retirement notices make this a maintenance bridge, not a new-store recommendation.
When to migrate to PayPal Payments
- New store: Start with WooCommerce PayPal Payments instead of installing or restoring PayPal Standard.
- Store upgrade: Plan migration before a WooCommerce or PayPal update removes or hides the legacy method.
- Feature needs: Move when you need the modern integration’s broader checkout, card, subscription, or Pay Later capabilities.
- Operational reliability: Move when maintaining separate PDT, IPN, and callback workarounds costs more than a controlled reconfiguration.
A safe migration sequence
- Record the current PayPal Standard settings, order-status behavior, IPN configuration, and refund process.
- Create a staging copy and connect PayPal Payments there first.
- Complete the PayPal account connection and verification required by the onboarding flow.
- Run Sandbox or test transactions, refunds, cancellations, and webhook or notification checks supported by the new integration.
- Schedule the live cutover during a low-volume period, monitor new orders, and keep the legacy configuration documented until existing transactions are reconciled.
Connecting PayPal Payments 4.1.0 can cause PayPal Standard to be automatically disabled and hidden under the June 2026 advisory, so confirm the migration plan before connecting the production account.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Entering a PayPal email address where the identity token belongs, or pasting the token into a general API credential field.
- Copying a Sandbox token into a live site or using live credentials while sandbox mode is enabled.
- Changing the receiver email without checking which PayPal account actually owns it.
- Assuming a successful redirect means the order-status callback succeeded.
- Disabling IPN without checking whether another WooCommerce process relies on it.
- Marking an order complete manually before confirming the PayPal transaction and resolving the notification failure.
- Starting a new implementation on a gateway WooCommerce is retiring.
Final decision
If you are repairing an existing PayPal Standard store, enable PDT, copy the generated identity token, paste it into the PayPal Standard settings, align the account emails, and verify the complete flow in Sandbox. If you are launching or modernizing a store, skip this legacy dependency and follow the WooCommerce PayPal Payments onboarding instead.
