To limit a child’s PlayStation Store spending, set the child account’s Monthly Spending Limit through Family Management. To require a password before purchases on an adult account, enable Require Password at Checkout. These are separate controls: the checkout password does not apply to child accounts or wallet funding.
Choose the control that matches the account
| Control | Who sets it | What it controls | Important exception |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly Spending Limit | Family manager, or an appointed guardian using the PlayStation Family app | Purchases made through a child account, paid from the family manager’s wallet | A child account has no separate PlayStation wallet. The limit defaults to zero. |
| Require Password at Checkout | The adult account holder | Store checkout on devices used to access PlayStation Store | It does not apply to child accounts or adding funds to the wallet. |
PlayStation’s setup guidance and menu paths below are from its U.S. support pages; the Family app steps are from its Canada support page. Labels can vary as interfaces change, and payment methods and terms can differ by region. If a menu does not match, consult PlayStation’s parental-controls support page or the support site for your account region.
Set a monthly spending limit for a child account
Use a separate child account so the family manager can manage its Store access and spending through Family Management. The monthly limit is zero by default, so the child cannot make purchases through that account unless the family manager raises the limit. PlayStation’s U.S. terms of service also state that the default is zero; the terms are dated March 2026.
- On the web: Sign in to Account Management, open Family Management, select the child, choose Edit, and adjust Monthly Spending Limit.
- On PS5: Go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Select the child, then choose Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
- On PS4: Go to Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management. If prompted, enter the account password again. Select the child, then choose Applications/Devices/Network Features > Monthly Spending Limit.
- In the PlayStation Family app: Select the child on the home screen, scroll to Monthly Spending Limit, and set the amount. PlayStation’s app guidance says an appointed guardian can change spending limits, so consider that delegated access when choosing guardians.
Child-account purchases draw on the family manager’s wallet; the child does not have a separate PlayStation wallet. Set only an amount you are comfortable allowing the child to spend. For official details, see PlayStation’s parental-controls and spending-limits guidance, its payment-methods guidance, and the March 2026 U.S. PlayStation Network Terms of Service.

Require a password for purchases on an adult account
Require Password at Checkout asks for the account password whenever a purchase is made. PlayStation says the setting applies across devices used to access PlayStation Store. It does not cover wallet funding, and it is not a substitute for setting a child account’s spending limit.
- On the web: Sign in to Account Management, select Payment Method, and turn on Require Password at Checkout.
- On PS5: Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings > Require Password at Checkout.
- On PS4: Go to Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Purchase Settings > Require Password for Purchases, then select Yes.
- In the PlayStation App: Select the PlayStation Store icon, open the menu in the top-right corner, choose Payment Methods, and turn on Require Password at Checkout.
See PlayStation’s checkout-password instructions for the current U.S. guidance.

Check the setup against your goal
- Child spending: Confirm the child uses a separate child account and set its Monthly Spending Limit in Family Management. Leave it at zero if purchases should be blocked through that account.
- Adult purchases: Enable Require Password at Checkout on the adult account that makes purchases.
- Wallet funding: The checkout password does not prompt when adding money to the wallet. Treat wallet funding as a separate account-management decision.
- Delegated family management: Review who is appointed as a guardian if using the Family app, since guardians may be able to change the child’s limit.
PlayStation’s U.S. parent safety guidance recommends separate child accounts so parents can manage access and spending through Family Management.
