How to Set Up RCON and Use RCON Commands on a Conan Exiles Server

To enable Conan Exiles RCON, edit the server’s Game.ini and add an [RconPlugin] section with RconEnabled=1, a unique RconPassword, and an RconPort (the documented default is TCP 25575). Restart the server, allow that TCP port through the host firewall, and connect with an RCON client such as mcrcon.

What Conan Exiles RCON does

RCON (remote console) lets an administrator send server commands over a network connection instead of opening the game server console locally. Funcom labels the Conan Exiles service “Remote administrative access.” It is separate from joining the game, querying the server browser, or using an in-game administrator character.

Conan’s RCON plugin is configured in Game.ini. The standard service listens on TCP port 25575 unless you choose another port. Because a successful login grants administrative control, the RCON password, firewall rule, and exposed address should be treated like credentials for the server itself.

Ports and configuration files at a glance

The port values above are Funcom’s documented defaults for the dedicated-server application. The game, pinger, and query services do not replace RCON: an RCON client must reach the configured RCON TCP port.

Prerequisites before enabling RCON

• A Conan Exiles dedicated server installation, normally on Windows for the paths and launch files shown here.
• Access to the server’s configuration directory and permission to restart the process.
• A long, unique RCON secret that is not reused for the game password, operating-system account, or hosting panel.
• Permission to create a host-firewall rule and, when the server is behind a router, a TCP port-forwarding rule.
• An RCON client. The examples use mcrcon; any client that supports Conan’s RCON protocol can use the same host, port, and password values.

Install the Conan Exiles dedicated server

1. Open Steam and go to Library > Tools.
2. Install Conan Exiles Dedicated Server.
3. Let Steam finish downloading and updating the tool before editing files. The installation directory is the server root used by the launch files and the ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServer configuration path.

For a first run, start the server once and stop it cleanly. This creates the expected saved-configuration folders and makes it easier to identify the active instance when several copies exist.

Configure the server identity and in-game administrator password

Set the server name and game password

Open ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerEngine.ini. Under the [OnlineSubsystem] section, set the server name and the password players must enter to join, using the keys generated by the dedicated-server template. Preserve any existing settings in that section; add values rather than deleting unrelated lines.

The game password controls entry to the server. It is not the same credential as the RCON password and should not be copied into the RCON section.

Set the in-game admin password

Open ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerServerSettings.ini. Under [ServerSettings], add or change:

AdminPassword=YOUR_DESIRED_ADMIN_PASSWORD_HERE

This password is used to obtain administrator privileges through Conan’s normal in-game administration flow. Keep it distinct from both the game join password and the RCON secret.

Enable Conan RCON in Game.ini

Open the server’s Game.ini, normally in the same WindowsServer configuration directory. Add one [RconPlugin] section with the three essential settings:

[RconPlugin]
RconEnabled=1
RconPassword=REPLACE_WITH_A_UNIQUE_SECRET
RconPort=25575

What each setting means

• RconEnabled=1 turns the Conan RCON plugin on. A value of 0 disables it.
• RconPassword is the shared secret clients must present when connecting. Avoid spaces and shell-sensitive characters if you will place it directly in a command line.
• RconPort selects the TCP listening port. 25575 is the documented default; specify a different unused port if your host already uses it.

The reference documentation notes that the default port may be omitted when the default is acceptable. Explicitly writing RconPort=25575 is usually clearer when diagnosing firewall and hosting-panel rules.

File-format checks

• Use plain-text INI syntax: one key, one equals sign, and one value per line.
• Do not put the section header inside another section.
• Do not create a second conflicting [RconPlugin] block elsewhere in the active file.
• Save the file as Game.ini, not Game.ini.txt.
• If a control panel regenerates configuration files, make the change in the panel’s designated custom-settings field or apply it after each regeneration.

Use launch arguments instead of (or in addition to) Game.ini

Conan’s documented command-line equivalents let you provide the same three values when starting the executable. A complete example is:

ConanSandboxServer.exe -RconEnabled=1 -RconPassword=REPLACE_WITH_A_UNIQUE_SECRET -RconPort=25575

Launch arguments are useful for scripted instances, temporary test servers, or hosts that maintain separate configuration files. Do not unintentionally define different values in the file and the startup script: determine which source your server wrapper applies last, then test the running service rather than assuming the file contents won.

Start the server and verify the active instance

1. Close any old Conan server process so it cannot keep the old RCON settings active.
2. Start with StartServer.bat or launch ConanSandboxServer.exe using the required arguments.
3. Wait for the server to finish loading before testing RCON. Starting the process is not proof that the plugin has bound its port.
4. Confirm that you are editing the configuration belonging to this process. Multiple Steam libraries, test copies, or hosting-panel instances can have different SavedConfigWindowsServer directories.
5. Record the machine’s reachable address: use its private address for a client on the same network and its public address for an external client, subject to NAT and firewall rules.

Open the firewall and router safely

Create an inbound rule allowing TCP traffic on the exact value of RconPort. Do not open UDP for RCON; the RCON service is TCP. If the server is behind a router, forward that same external TCP port to the server’s private IP and matching internal port.

Limit exposure

• Prefer a firewall allow-list of the administrator’s fixed public IP addresses or private management network.
• If your host cannot restrict source addresses, keep the RCON port reachable only through a VPN or other protected network path.
• Never publish the RCON password in a public chat, startup screenshot, repository, or shared hosting ticket.
• Change the secret immediately if an unauthorized person may have seen it, then restart the server and update every client.
• Choose a non-conflicting port when 25575 is already assigned, but remember that changing the number requires matching changes in Game.ini, firewall rules, router forwarding, and client commands.

Opening a port does not guarantee reachability. Carrier-grade NAT, a host provider’s network firewall, or an upstream router can still block inbound traffic even when the Windows rule is correct.

Connect with mcrcon

The Conan Exiles RCON reference demonstrates mcrcon with this command:

mcrcon.exe -c -t -H SERVER_IP -P 25575 -p YOUR_RCON_PASSWORD

Replace SERVER_IP with the address visible from the client and replace the password with the value in RconPassword. Use the selected port if you changed it.

Meaning of the connection options

• -H supplies the server host or IP address.
• -P supplies the RCON TCP port.
• -p supplies the RCON password.
• -t requests the interactive terminal mode used for entering commands.
• -c enables the client behavior shown in the reference example.

After authentication, enter:

help

help asks the running server which commands it accepts. This is more reliable than copying a command list from an unrelated server version, because available commands can change with updates, plugins, or mods.

Connection test sequence

1. Run the client from a machine that should be allowed by the firewall.
2. Use the exact host, port, and password currently configured on the running server.
3. Run help immediately after login.
4. Send a harmless informational command before attempting moderation or gameplay changes.
5. Record the server response and timestamp if you need to troubleshoot or audit the session.

Conan RCON versus BattlEye BE RCon

These are two different administration systems. Configuring one does not automatically configure the other, and a client command valid in one system may be rejected by the other.

BattlEye’s documentation describes connecting through BE RCon and entering commands in its console. Its documented examples include commands, version, players, kick, ban, addBan, removeBan, and say. Those commands belong to BE RCon; do not paste them into Conan RCON unless the running Conan command list confirms they exist.

Logs: where to look when a command fails

RCON command log

Conan’s RCON reference identifies RconCommandLog.log in the server’s Logs folder. Check it to determine whether the server received a command, rejected authentication, or accepted a request that produced no visible in-game effect.

Main server log

Connections are also recorded in ConanSandbox.log. Use it to confirm startup errors, plugin initialization, bind failures, and the address or port the process attempted to use.

How to preserve useful evidence

• Stop repeatedly changing settings before checking the active log; otherwise you can lose the startup context that explains the failure.
• Note the exact UTC or local time, client address, port, and command used.
• Compare the log directory’s modification time with the process you launched to ensure you are reading the correct instance.
• Remove passwords from screenshots and shared log excerpts.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

“Connection refused” or timeout

1. Confirm the server process is running and fully initialized.
2. Check that RconEnabled=1 is in the active Game.ini or that the launch command contains -RconEnabled=1.
3. Compare the client’s -P value with RconPort; a mismatch is the most common configuration error.
4. Verify an inbound TCP rule exists on the server host.
5. If connecting from outside the LAN, verify router forwarding and the public address.
6. Check whether another process already occupies the chosen port; select a free port and update every dependent rule if necessary.

“Authentication failed”

• Re-enter the exact RconPassword; it is case-sensitive.
• Check for a stale client password, accidental quotation marks, or shell interpretation of special characters.
• Restart the server after changing the password. A running process may still hold the previous value.
• Make sure you are not using the game join password or AdminPassword by mistake.

Login succeeds but commands do nothing

1. Run help and use the command spelling shown by the running server.
2. Check whether a mod or server update changed the command set.
3. Look in RconCommandLog.log and ConanSandbox.log for a rejection or execution error.
4. Test a read-only command first; a command that changes gameplay may require a different syntax or privilege.
5. Confirm you connected to the intended server rather than another instance sharing the same public address.

It works locally but not remotely

A local success proves the plugin is listening but does not prove that the public route is open. Recheck the router’s destination IP, upstream provider firewall, external port, and whether your network uses carrier-grade NAT. If remote exposure cannot be restricted safely, place administration behind a private network or VPN instead of forwarding RCON directly.

Operational practices for a safer RCON deployment

• Use a dedicated, randomly generated secret and rotate it when staff access changes.
• Grant access only to administrators who need it; RCON is not a player-facing feature.
• Keep the RCON port out of public server descriptions and avoid predictable port/password combinations.
• Back up Game.ini, Engine.ini, and ServerSettings.ini before edits, while storing backups where passwords cannot be broadly read.
• Document which server instance, port, and firewall rule belong together.
• Review command logs after granting a new administrator or installing a mod that adds commands.
• After a Conan update, run help again and verify that your routine commands still exist.
