To set up RustAdmin, enable RCON on your Rust server, create an RCON password, confirm the RCON port shown by your host, restart the server, and connect from RustAdmin using WebRcon. RustAdmin is a Windows graphical administration client; it does not replace the server’s RCON settings.

What RustAdmin does and what you need
RustAdmin is a third-party Windows GUI for administering a Rust server through RCON (remote console). The server still performs the authentication and exposes the network endpoint; RustAdmin supplies the interface for connecting to it. You need administrative access to the server or hosting panel, the server’s IP address or hostname, the game port, the RCON port, and the exact RCON password.

- Permission to edit configuration: Depending on the host, this is a Configuration Files page, a Settings page, or startup-variable controls.

- Network access: Your computer must be allowed to reach the RCON port. A server can be online for players while its RCON port remains blocked.
- RustAdmin: Use the current download offered at rustadmin.com. Older hosting guides say an account may be required, so follow the site’s current sign-in or download instructions rather than assuming one is needed.
RustAdmin-specific guides available for this setup are several years old. Labels and page locations may differ on a current host, so use the values displayed in your own panel when they conflict with an example.
Understand the settings before editing anything
Rust exposes RCON through launch parameters and configuration values. The names below are the ones reported in Facepunch-side documentation summaries and hosting instructions. Your panel may present them with friendlier labels.

Two points require special care. First, published setup summaries disagree about the RCON-port default: one describes rcon.port as initially matching server.port, while a hosting example uses the game port plus one (for example, game port 28015 and RCON port 28016). These statements cannot be treated as a universal rule. The authoritative value for your connection is the RCON port shown by your host or configured on your own machine. Second, sources disagree about whether rcon.web must be set to 1. Start with the protocol your panel documents; if the connection fails, inspect the startup variables and test the explicit WebSocket setting.
Configure RCON on the server
1. Set the RCON password
Open your host’s configuration interface. One common path is Configuration Files → server.cfg; another host presents the same value in a Settings tab. Find the field labelled RCon Password or the equivalent rcon.password variable and save a long, unique value.

A summary of Facepunch-side behavior reports that server.cfg loads at startup and takes priority over command-line values. That means an old password in server.cfg can override a different password entered in a startup field. Check both locations when a change appears not to take effect.

2. Confirm the RCON and game ports
Open the panel’s network, overview, or connection-information section and record both ports separately. The game port is the one players use to join; the RCON port is the endpoint RustAdmin must reach. Some hosts allocate the RCON port automatically, so the value may not be a simple increment of the game port. If the panel lists a dedicated RCON port, use that exact number.
Do not assign the RCON port to the query port or to another service already listening on the machine. A host guide specifically warns that the RCON port must differ from the game port. Even where a provider uses a different allocation scheme, separate values avoid the collision that prevents either service from binding.
3. Decide whether to enable WebRcon explicitly
RustAdmin’s normal setup uses WebRcon. If your panel exposes an rcon.web startup option, the reported Facepunch behavior is 1 for WebSocket RCON and 0 for the older Source RCON implementation. One hosting guide says to set it to 1; another says WebSocket RCON is not required. Follow the setting documented by your provider first. If RustAdmin cannot establish a session, try the explicit WebSocket value and restart before testing again.

4. Save and restart
Save the configuration and perform a complete server restart, not merely a map change or player disconnect. The restart causes the password, ports, and protocol variables to be read. Wait until the panel reports that the server is running again, then re-check the displayed RCON port and password field before opening RustAdmin.
Install RustAdmin
- Open rustadmin.com and use its current download instructions.
- Install or launch the Windows application according to the installer’s prompts.
- If the site requests an account, complete that step; older guides differ on whether an account is required.
- Keep the application updated from the same official RustAdmin site. Do not download an executable from an unverified mirror, because the program will be given credentials with full server-admin authority.
The download and account workflow can change independently of your Rust server. If the site’s current instructions differ from an older guide, the site’s instructions take precedence; the connection values described below remain the information RustAdmin needs.
Connect RustAdmin with WebRcon
After the server has restarted, enter the connection details in RustAdmin’s Configuration tab.

- Launch RustAdmin and open Configuration.
- Set the connection type to WebRcon. Do not choose the legacy Source RCON option when your server is configured for WebSocket RCON.
- Enter the server’s public IP address or the hostname supplied by your host.
- Enter the game port in the game-port field. This is
server.port, not the query port and not automatically the RCON port. - Enter the RCON port exactly as displayed in the host’s network or overview section.
- Enter the RCON password exactly as saved on the server. Passwords are case-sensitive; remove any trailing space introduced while copying.
- Click Connect.

A successful connection should give RustAdmin an authenticated console session. If the application reports an authentication or network error, leave the server running while you check the failure branches below; repeatedly changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.

Verify the connection safely
First confirm that RustAdmin remains connected after a short idle period and that the console receives a response when you issue an administrative action appropriate to your server. Use a harmless check rather than a destructive command while validating a new installation. If the connection drops immediately, compare the host’s current RCON port and protocol setting with RustAdmin’s saved profile.
When more than one administrator needs access, check your provider’s policy. One hosting guide says only one person can use RustAdmin on a server at a time; that is a host-specific limitation, not a guaranteed property of every Rust server or every RustAdmin release. If concurrent administration matters, ask the host whether it limits RCON sessions before sharing credentials.

Troubleshoot failed connections

Change one variable at a time during diagnosis. Record the values currently shown by the panel, restart after protocol or credential changes, and then retest with the same RustAdmin profile. If the host manages the RCON allocation, support staff can confirm whether the port is externally reachable and whether a firewall or network access list is blocking it.
Hosting panel versus self-managed server
Using a hosting panel
A managed host usually supplies the public address, game port, and RCON port. The safest workflow is to use the panel’s displayed values rather than applying defaults from a different provider. Passwords may be edited under Configuration Files, under Settings, or in a startup-variable editor. Capture a screenshot or text record of the final values, then restart from the panel and wait for the status to return to running.
Managing the machine yourself
On a self-managed installation, you control the launch parameters, server.cfg, operating-system firewall, and any cloud firewall in front of the machine. Keep the RCON port separate from the game port, ensure the chosen port is bound and forwarded correctly, and permit access only from the administration network you intend to use. Because the available summaries do not establish one universal default for rcon.port, define and document the value you actually launch with instead of relying on an assumed default.
Secure your RCON access
RCON credentials provide full administrative access to the Rust server. Treat them like root-level credentials, not like an ordinary player password.
- Use a unique secret: Generate a long password used nowhere else. Never post it in chat, screenshots, tickets, or public configuration repositories.
- Restrict the network: Limit inbound access to the RCON port to trusted administrator IP addresses where your host or firewall supports allow-listing. A VPN is preferable to exposing RCON broadly.
- Encrypt the path: Avoid administering over an untrusted network unless the connection is protected by a trusted VPN or equivalent secure path.
- Separate game and RCON exposure: Players need the game port, not the RCON port. Do not open the RCON port to the whole internet when a narrower rule is possible.
- Rotate after exposure: Change the RCON password immediately if it appears in a log, screenshot, shared document, or message. Save the new value, restart the server, and update every authorized RustAdmin profile.
- Limit sharing: Give the credential only to people who require administrative access, and check whether your host limits simultaneous RustAdmin sessions.

The disagreement among host guides about whether rcon.web must be explicitly set means you should treat the provider’s startup template as authoritative for that server. A protocol mismatch can look like a bad password even when the password is correct.
Final setup checklist
- RCON password is set in the server’s authoritative configuration location.
- The server has been fully restarted after saving the change.
- The panel’s RCON port is recorded separately from the game and query ports.
- RustAdmin is the current Windows build obtained from rustadmin.com.
- RustAdmin’s Configuration tab is set to WebRcon.
- The public server address, game port, RCON port, and exact password are entered in their matching fields.
- Firewall or provider access rules allow your trusted administration address to reach the RCON port.
- The RCON credential is unique, private, and limited to necessary administrators.
Once these values agree, RustAdmin can administer the server through WebRcon without changing the port used by players. When they do not agree, verify the host-displayed port, the authoritative password in server.cfg or the panel, and the rcon.web protocol setting before trying another client.
