Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe most flexible self-hosted setup is Node Exporter → Prometheus → Alertmanager. Node Exporter exposes Linux CPU, memory, filesystem, and network metrics; Prometheus stores and evaluates them; Alertmanager groups alerts and delivers email, chat, paging, or webhook notifications. This guide shows how to deploy that chain, create useful rules, test delivery, and tune thresholds so a game server or other VPS warns you before resource exhaustion becomes an outage.

What the monitoring stack does
A resource alert has three separate jobs. First, a collector reads the operating system. Prometheus Node Exporter is a static binary that exposes a wide range of Linux hardware- and kernel-related metrics over HTTP, normally on port 9100. Second, Prometheus scrapes that endpoint, stores the time series, and evaluates PromQL expressions. Third, Alertmanager receives firing alerts, groups related events, suppresses duplicates, applies silences and inhibition rules, and sends notifications through configured receivers.

The trade-off is that you must operate three components instead of installing one dashboard.
Prometheus and Node Exporter versus Netdata
Netdata is the main integrated alternative. Its Linux virtual-machine collector covers CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network utilization through cgroups and includes health alerts such as ten-minute CPU usage and RAM in use. Its alert reference distinguishes chart-specific alarm: definitions from reusable template: definitions, which is useful when the same rule should apply to multiple disks or interfaces.

| Choose | Best fit | What you get | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Node Exporter + Prometheus + Alertmanager | Several hosts, PromQL queries, durable time-series analysis, or a broad integration ecosystem | Separate collection, storage/evaluation, and notification layers; flexible routing and historical analysis | More components to secure, configure, and maintain |
| Netdata | Fast installation, one integrated view, and preconfigured health alerts | Dashboard and alert system in one product, with documented Linux resource collectors | Less suited when you specifically need PromQL-based, multi-host time-series workflows |
This is an architectural choice rather than a requirement to run both. Start with Prometheus when you expect multiple VPSs or want to build your own queries. Start with Netdata when a quick, integrated view matters more than a separate metrics database and routing layer.
Plan the deployment before installing anything
Define the targets and notification path
Decide whether Prometheus will run on the same VPS as Node Exporter or on a separate monitoring host. A separate host keeps monitoring available if the game server is overloaded or offline, but it requires a firewall rule allowing the monitoring host to reach TCP port 9100. A same-host installation is simpler for a single VPS; use loopback access and keep the exporter endpoint private.

Email, Slack, Telegram, Discord, and webhooks are supported integration categories. Use a channel that is checked outside the server itself; a notification written only to a local log is not an operational alert.
Use a dedicated account and network controls
- Run Node Exporter and Prometheus under dedicated, non-administrative service accounts.
- Allow port 9100 only from the Prometheus host or private monitoring network.
- Do not expose Prometheus or Alertmanager administrative endpoints to the public internet without authentication and network controls.
- Keep the operating system, firewall, and service-manager configuration under your normal change-control process.
Allow time for a baseline
Do not choose thresholds from a universal percentage. A build, backup, database, or busy game-server tick pattern can make a short spike normal. Collect several days of ordinary traffic first, then set warning and critical levels around the behavior you actually observe. Keep the two severities distinct so a warning can create a ticket while a critical event pages someone.
Install and verify Node Exporter
Install the official Node Exporter release that matches the VPS operating system and CPU architecture. The project distributes it as a static binary. Place it in a system binary directory, create a dedicated service account, and run it with the host service manager (for example, systemd). Avoid running it as root unless a collector explicitly requires privileges.
- Create a service account with no interactive shell and download the release appropriate to your Linux architecture from the official project distribution.
- Install the
node_exporterbinary in a directory on the system path, such as/usr/local/bin, and ensure it is executable. - Create a service definition that starts the binary as the dedicated account, restarts it on failure, and starts it at boot.
- Reload the service manager, enable the service, and start it.
- Verify locally before involving Prometheus:
curl http://localhost:9100/metrics
A successful response is plain-text metrics containing series such as node_filesystem_avail_bytes and network counters used by PromQL. If the request fails, check the service status and logs, confirm that port 9100 is listening on the expected address, and inspect local firewall rules. Do not move on to Prometheus until this endpoint responds.

Review collectors before enabling extras
Node Exporter includes collectors that are disabled or optional because some have high cardinality, long runtimes, or significant resource demands. Enable additional collectors one at a time. After each change, watch scrape duration and exporter resource use; a collector that costs more CPU than the metric is worth can create the very pressure you are trying to detect.
Configure Prometheus to scrape the VPS
Prometheus needs a scrape job pointing to the exporter. The official minimal example uses a 15-second interval and a local target:
global:
scrape_interval: 15s
scrape_configs:
- job_name: node
static_configs:
- targets: ['localhost:9100']
For a remote exporter, replace localhost:9100 with the private address and port of the VPS, then permit that connection in the VPS firewall. Keep the target label stable; it becomes the instance value shown in alert messages and dashboards.
Validate before reloading
- Run Prometheus’s configuration checker against the file and correct YAML or rule errors before touching the running process.
- Reload Prometheus using the service manager or the reload method enabled in your deployment.
- Open the targets view and confirm the node job is UP.
- Query a known metric, such as
node_filesystem_avail_bytes, to verify that samples are arriving. - Query network receive traffic with
rate(node_network_receive_bytes_total[1m])to confirm that counters can be turned into per-second rates.
If a target is down, an alert expression cannot distinguish a quiet server from a monitoring failure. Treat scrape health as its own alert family.
Design alert rules that lead to action
Every rule should contain an alert name, a PromQL expression, labels such as severity, a for duration, and annotations with a concise summary plus a remediation link or runbook reference. The for clause prevents a transient sample from paging you. Prometheus’s official examples use five minutes for a target-down condition; workload and urgency should determine whether your resource rules need a shorter or longer period.
CPU saturation
Alert on sustained busy CPU or load relative to the VPS’s core count, not on a one-second peak. A game server can spike during a map change, save, or scheduled job without being unhealthy. Pair a warning for prolonged high utilization with a critical rule for a longer or more severe condition. Include the instance and the process or workload that should be checked in the annotation.

The expression is intentionally workload-specific: choose a baseline after observing normal operation and account for the VPS core count. A single fixed percentage is not reliable across one-core and multi-core machines.
Memory pressure and swap activity
Use available memory and swap behavior together. Low available memory can be harmless when the kernel is using cache, while sustained swap-in or swap-out indicates pressure that can increase latency. Set the threshold from observed application behavior, and annotate the alert with the service most likely to need memory. A warning should arrive early enough to stop a restart storm or evict a player session; a critical rule should represent an imminent risk of out-of-memory failure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Alert on low available memory over a sustained interval.
- Add a separate condition for unusual or persistent swap activity when the VPS has swap enabled.
- Check the application, worker count, caches, and recent deployment before simply adding more swap.
Filesystem capacity and read-only mounts
Filesystem alerts should cover both percentage and absolute free space. A large disk can have a low percentage but plenty of room for a log file, while a small root volume can run out of bytes with a seemingly comfortable percentage. Use node_filesystem_avail_bytes for byte-based rules and a percentage expression for capacity-based rules.
Exclude pseudo-filesystems and temporary mounts with label matchers appropriate to your environment. Apply separate handling to read-only filesystems: a full writable volume and a filesystem that has switched to read-only mode require different remediation. Include the mountpoint, filesystem, and available bytes in the annotation.
- alert: NodeFilesystemSpaceLow
expr: <available-space expression using node_filesystem_avail_bytes>
for: 10m
labels:
severity: warning
annotations:
summary: 'Low disk space on {{ $labels.instance }}'
description: 'Mount {{ $labels.mountpoint }} is below the baseline. Remove or rotate data before writes fail.'
Before deploying a percentage rule, identify which mounts are real data volumes. A blanket rule over every mounted pseudo-filesystem creates noise and can hide the one alert that matters.
Network, exporter, and service health
Traffic volume alone is not proof of health. Alert on unusual receive or transmit rates, packet errors, and a target that can no longer be scraped. The direct availability test is an up == 0 rule. It catches a stopped exporter, a firewall change, a crashed VPS, or a broken route, all of which can otherwise look like a quiet server.

for: 5m
labels:
severity: critical
annotations:

Use the documented network counter query pattern, rate(node_network_receive_bytes_total[1m]), when defining traffic baselines. Add packet-error rules only for interfaces that carry real application traffic; loopback and virtual interfaces can produce misleading comparisons.
Write useful annotations and labels
Labels determine routing and grouping. At minimum, set severity; add stable labels such as environment, service, or role when you operate more than one VPS. Avoid putting rapidly changing values into labels because that increases time-series cardinality.
Annotations are for people. A good summary names the condition and instance. The description should identify the mountpoint or interface, state how long the condition has persisted, and point to a remediation runbook. For a game server, that might mean checking recent world saves, log growth, player-count changes, or a scheduled backup. Do not put a secret, token, or full administrative command in a notification.

Configure Alertmanager routing and delivery
Prometheus sends firing alerts to Alertmanager; Alertmanager handles notification policy. Configure a receiver for your chosen channel, then create routes that group related alerts and send critical events to the fastest path. Grouping prevents ten filesystem alerts from ten mounts becoming ten separate messages during one incident.
- Route critical alerts to an always-monitored receiver.
- Route warnings to a ticket or lower-noise channel.
- Group by labels such as alert name, instance, and severity so related symptoms appear together.
- Use silences for planned maintenance and inhibition to suppress secondary alerts when a root cause is already firing.
- Set repeat intervals appropriate to your response process; a reminder is useful, but repeated messages every few minutes create alert fatigue.
The official configuration supports a reload with SIGHUP or POST /-/reload. Validate the configuration first, reload it, and then trigger a controlled test. Confirm that the notification arrives, contains the expected labels and annotations, and produces a resolved message when the condition clears. Test the failure path from outside the VPS if possible; a local test can miss a routing or firewall problem between hosts.
Test alerts without waiting for an outage
- Verify the exporter endpoint locally with
curl http://localhost:9100/metrics. - Confirm the Prometheus target is up and that the rule is loaded without parse errors.
- Temporarily use a safe test expression or a maintenance label to make one rule fire.
- Watch the rule move from pending to firing after its
forduration. - Confirm Alertmanager groups and routes the notification to the intended receiver.
- Restore the normal expression and verify that a resolved notification is delivered.
- Remove any test silence, temporary route, or altered threshold.
Record the test date and result in your operations notes. Re-run the test after changing receiver credentials, firewall rules, TLS settings, or the service-manager unit.

Tune thresholds from real VPS behavior
Separate warning from critical
Warning means someone should investigate before the service is affected. Critical means the condition threatens availability or data integrity. For storage, warning might indicate that log rotation or cleanup is due, while critical means the volume is close to rejecting writes. For memory, warning can identify a rising baseline and critical can identify sustained swap pressure or an imminent out-of-memory event.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose durations that match the failure mode
Use a short for period for a complete monitoring failure if you need rapid awareness, and a longer period for bursty CPU or network conditions. The five-minute duration shown in official target-down examples is a starting point, not a universal setting. A turn-based game server may tolerate a brief CPU burst but not five minutes of saturation; a backup window may make high disk I/O normal for an hour.
Review false positives and misses
- When an alert fires, note whether the condition required action or was expected behavior.
- If it was noise, adjust the expression, label matchers, or duration rather than silencing it permanently.
- If an incident occurred without an alert, add the missing metric or lower the threshold based on the observed lead time.
- Review rules after changes to player capacity, storage size, swap, database settings, or backup schedules.
Troubleshoot common failures
The exporter endpoint does not respond
Check that the service is running under the intended account, that the binary matches the architecture, and that it is listening on port 9100. Review service logs and local firewall rules. If it listens only on a private address, ensure Prometheus uses that address rather than loopback.
Prometheus shows the target as down
Test connectivity from the Prometheus host to the exporter address and port. Confirm the VPS firewall permits only the monitoring source, verify DNS or private addressing, and check whether a security-group change blocked the scrape. The up == 0 alert should remain active until the target is reachable again.
Rules are loaded but never fire
Run the PromQL expression directly and inspect its labels. A matcher that excludes the real mountpoint or interface can return no series. Check the evaluation interval and remember that a for clause keeps a condition pending until it remains true for the full duration.
Recommended Free Tools
Notifications are missing or duplicated
Inspect Alertmanager’s routing tree, receiver credentials, grouping labels, silences, and inhibition rules. A missing notification can be a route mismatch; duplicates can result from overly broad grouping or multiple Prometheus instances sending the same alert. Send a controlled test and verify both firing and resolved messages.
Scrapes consume too many resources
Review optional Node Exporter collectors and disable extras that add high cardinality, long runtimes, or significant resource demand. Compare scrape duration and exporter CPU before and after each collector change. Monitoring must remain cheaper than the failure it is intended to prevent.
Operational checklist
- Dedicated accounts run Node Exporter, Prometheus, and Alertmanager.
- Exporter, Prometheus, and Alertmanager endpoints are protected by firewall and network controls.
curl http://localhost:9100/metricssucceeds on the VPS.- The Prometheus node target is up and samples such as
node_filesystem_avail_bytesare queryable. - CPU, memory, filesystem, network, exporter, and service-health rules have warning or critical severities.
- Rules include a meaningful
forduration and annotations with instance, mountpoint or interface, and remediation guidance. - Alertmanager routes, grouping, silences, and inhibition have been tested.
- A notification and a resolved notification both arrive at the intended receiver.
- Thresholds reflect several days of baseline data and are reviewed after workload changes.
- Optional collectors are enabled deliberately and scrape cost is monitored.
Which setup should you use?
Use Node Exporter, Prometheus, and Alertmanager when you need PromQL, durable history, multiple VPS targets, or detailed notification routing. Use Netdata when a single integrated dashboard and preconfigured Linux health alerts are the priority. Whichever path you choose, protect administrative endpoints, test the notification route, and tune alerts against observed workload behavior. An alert that arrives early, identifies the affected resource, and tells you what to check is more valuable than a large collection of untested metrics.
