How to set up Steam Frame eye tracking for a single eye

To limit Steam Frame eye tracking to one eye, enable Show advanced settings, then open VR Settings > General and turn on Track Dominant Eye Only. Valve added this accessibility option in SteamOS 0.4, released to all users on October 8, 2026. The separate Dominant Eye preference is for spectator view, screenshots and similar outputs; Valve has not said that it selects the eye tracked by the single-eye option.

What you need before changing the setting

This is a software configuration on Steam Frame. The documented procedure does not require an additional accessory, replacement part, calibration tool or consumable. The headset’s hardware page lists two interior cameras for eye tracking and foveated streaming, but the single-eye option is controlled in SteamOS settings rather than by changing the cameras.

  • A Steam Frame headset with access to its VR settings.
  • SteamOS 0.4 or a release that includes the same option. Valve announced SteamOS 0.4 for all users on October 8, 2026.
  • Access to the advanced-settings control. Valve says the control must be enabled before the single-eye option appears, although the release notes do not give that control’s exact menu path.

If you are following an older guide that does not mention advanced settings, it may omit the step that makes the single-eye control visible.

Set up single-eye tracking

  1. Open Steam Frame’s VR settings. Enter the headset’s VR settings interface rather than changing the separate spectator or screenshot preferences.
  2. Enable “Show advanced settings.” Valve identifies this requirement in the SteamOS 0.4 release notes. The notes do not document the exact menu path for the advanced-settings switch, so use the control labeled Show advanced settings wherever it appears in the VR settings interface.
  3. Open VR Settings > General. This is the menu path Valve gives for the single-eye control.
  4. Turn on “Track Dominant Eye Only.” Use this exact setting label. Enabling it limits eye tracking to a single eye instead of tracking both eyes.
  5. Leave the setting enabled when you use the headset. The option remains the relevant control for single-eye tracking; do not substitute the separate Dominant Eye preference for it.

Valve’s wording is: “Added accessibility option for users who want to limit eye tracking to a single eye. VR Settings -> General -> Track Dominant Eye Only. (requires enabling "show advanced settings").” The statement appears in the SteamOS 0.4 for Steam Frame release notes dated October 8, 2026.

Track Dominant Eye Only and Dominant Eye are different controls

Steam Frame exposes two similarly named preferences, but Valve documents different jobs for them. Confusing the controls can leave you with the wrong configuration even when both are enabled.

Control Where it is documented Documented purpose
Track Dominant Eye Only VR Settings > General; shown after Show advanced settings is enabled Limits eye tracking to a single eye
Dominant Eye VR Settings Chooses which eye is used for spectator view, screenshots and similar outputs

The release notes do not establish whether the Dominant Eye preference determines which eye is tracked when Track Dominant Eye Only is enabled. Treat them as separate settings: use Track Dominant Eye Only to request single-eye tracking, and use Dominant Eye only when you need to choose the eye represented in spectator output or screenshots. Do not promise that changing one changes the other.

Why Steam Frame has an eye-tracking setting

Valve’s Steam Frame hardware page specifies two interior cameras for eye tracking and foveated streaming. In normal operation, those cameras provide the headset’s eye-tracking input. Track Dominant Eye Only is an accessibility option for users who want that input limited to one eye.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available documentation describes the purpose of the toggle, but it does not provide a performance measurement, accuracy figure, latency result or claim that single-eye tracking improves image quality, battery life or streaming bandwidth. Enable it to meet a single-eye accessibility need; do not treat it as a guaranteed optimization for every user.

If the option is missing

Work through the checks below in order. Each check follows a documented requirement or version condition rather than assuming an undocumented menu layout.

Check that advanced settings are visible

Track Dominant Eye Only is hidden until Show advanced settings is enabled. Return to the VR settings interface and look for that exact label. Because Valve’s release notes do not specify the switch’s location, its position may not match the path used in third-party instructions.

Check the General page

Once advanced settings are shown, open VR Settings > General. The single-eye option is documented on that page. Searching elsewhere in VR settings can lead you to the similarly named Dominant Eye preference, which does not replace the tracking toggle.

Check the SteamOS release

Valve lists the feature as part of SteamOS 0.4 for Steam Frame and announced that release for all users on October 8, 2026. If your headset is running an earlier SteamOS release, the setting may not be present. Bring the device to the release that contains the feature, then check the advanced General settings again.

Confirm you are changing the headset’s VR settings

The documented path is inside Steam Frame’s VR settings. A spectator-view or screenshot menu can expose Dominant Eye without exposing Track Dominant Eye Only, because the two controls have different purposes.

How to choose the eye for screenshots and spectator view

If your goal is to decide which eye appears in spectator output rather than to limit tracking, use the separate Dominant Eye preference in VR Settings. Valve specifically describes this preference as selecting the eye used for spectator view, screenshots and similar outputs.

That choice does not come with a documented promise about the eye used by Track Dominant Eye Only. If you need single-eye tracking, enable the tracking toggle independently. If you also need a particular eye in screenshots or spectator view, set Dominant Eye as a second, separate preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understanding the two-camera hardware

The hardware specification of “2x interior cameras” means Steam Frame has two cameras positioned inside the headset for eye tracking and foveated streaming. It is a camera count, not a claim about tracking quality or a requirement that both cameras remain active in every mode.

When Track Dominant Eye Only is enabled, the software option limits eye tracking to one eye even though the headset contains two interior cameras. The cited hardware page does not identify a physical camera-disable procedure, and the release notes do not instruct users to cover, unplug or modify either camera. Do not attempt a hardware workaround for this setting.

What the official documentation does and does not say

The release notes establish four practical facts:

  • The feature is an accessibility option for limiting eye tracking to a single eye.
  • The exact label is Track Dominant Eye Only.
  • Its documented location is VR Settings > General.
  • Show advanced settings must be enabled for it to appear.

The same release notes identify a separate Dominant Eye preference and describe its effect on spectator view and screenshots. They do not say that this preference controls the eye selected by the single-eye tracking option. They also do not publish a calibration sequence, a visual indicator, a supported-eye selector under Track Dominant Eye Only, or a benchmark comparing one-eye and two-eye tracking.

Those omissions matter when interpreting the setting. You can follow the documented menu path with confidence, but you should not infer an undocumented eye-selection rule or a performance benefit from the names alone.

A practical configuration checklist

  • Steam Frame is running a SteamOS release that includes the SteamOS 0.4 feature.
  • Show advanced settings is enabled.
  • Track Dominant Eye Only is enabled under VR Settings > General.
  • Dominant Eye is configured separately if screenshots or spectator view need a particular eye.
  • No camera is covered, removed or physically altered; the documented method is the software toggle.

Common configuration mistakes

Looking only for “Dominant Eye”

That preference is documented for spectator view, screenshots and similar outputs. It is not the named single-eye tracking control. Enable Track Dominant Eye Only in the General page as well.

Skipping advanced settings

If the advanced-settings switch is off, the single-eye option will not appear. Turn on Show advanced settings before checking General.

Assuming the selected eye is documented

Valve has not explained whether the separate Dominant Eye choice selects the eye used for tracking. Keep the two settings conceptually separate and avoid relying on an assumed mapping.

Expecting a published performance gain

The official materials do not provide a statistic showing that single-eye tracking changes latency, streaming bandwidth, battery use or visual quality. The supported reason to enable it is the accessibility need stated by Valve: limiting tracking to one eye.

Version and source details

Valve announced SteamOS 0.4 for Steam Frame as available to all users on October 8, 2026. The release notes are the source for the setting name, menu path, advanced-settings requirement and the separate Dominant Eye preference. Valve’s Steam Frame hardware page is the source for the two interior cameras used for eye tracking and foveated streaming.

Because menu labels and locations can change in later software releases, use the exact label Track Dominant Eye Only and verify that it appears under VR Settings > General. If a later release moves the control, its function should still be distinguished from the separate Dominant Eye output preference unless Valve documents a change.

Bottom line

Enable Show advanced settings, open VR Settings > General, and switch on Track Dominant Eye Only. Set Dominant Eye separately only for spectator view or screenshots, because Valve has not documented it as the selector for single-eye tracking.
