To play at 1440p, connect Steam Machine to a display that accepts 2560×1440 through the input you plan to use, then select that input and finish SteamOS setup. Steam Machine provides both HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs. After signing in, check each game’s Steam Machine Verified information before assuming it will render smoothly at 1440p.

The output specification tells you what the connection can carry; it does not promise a particular game frame rate, graphics preset or consistency. Your display, cable, selected refresh rate and the game’s own workload all affect the result.

What 1440p means for this setup

1440p normally means a 2560×1440 image, also called QHD. A monitor or television can advertise 1440p support yet offer different refresh rates, HDR behavior or variable-refresh features depending on the input. Check the display’s manual or specifications for the exact combination you intend to use, such as 2560×1440 at 60Hz, 120Hz or another rate.

Steam Machine is a SteamOS computer rather than a console with one fixed video mode. Valve describes SteamOS as providing a plug-and-play experience while retaining PC flexibility, and lists quick suspend/resume and cloud saves among the platform features. The practical setup therefore has two parts: establish a reliable video link, then use SteamOS and the game’s settings to choose an appropriate mode.

Valve’s official hardware listing is the reference for the current ports and capabilities: Steam Machine. Valve notes that some specifications may change before availability, so recheck that page when you buy or configure the system.

Steam Machine’s 1440p-capable connections

There are two relevant video paths. Neither is universally better; the right choice is the one that matches the input on your display and the mode you want to use.

Connection Valve-listed output capability Features listed by Valve Choose it when
HDMI 2.0 Up to 4K at 120Hz HDR, FreeSync and CEC Your TV or monitor has the HDMI input you need, or you want a straightforward living-room connection.
DisplayPort 1.4 Up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz HDR and FreeSync Your monitor provides DisplayPort and supports the desired 1440p refresh rate through that port.

These are interface limits from Valve’s specification, not game benchmarks. They establish that the connection can carry modes above 2560×1440 under the stated conditions; they do not establish that a particular title will maintain 60, 120 or 240 frames per second at 1440p. For the complete specification and qualifications, use the official Steam Machine listing.

Choose the display before you connect anything

Confirm native resolution

For a crisp 1440p image, choose a display whose native panel resolution is 2560×1440. A 4K display can accept many input modes, but it may scale a 1440p signal to its 3840×2160 panel. Scaling can be perfectly usable, but it is a different choice from using a native 1440p panel.

Check the input-specific refresh rate

Do not rely only on the headline refresh rate. A display might support a high rate on DisplayPort but a lower rate on HDMI, or require a particular input mode to enable it. Read the specifications for the exact port and resolution: 2560×1440 at the refresh rate you want.

Match features you actually need

  • HDR: Confirm that the display accepts HDR over the selected input and that HDR can be enabled at your target resolution and refresh rate.
  • FreeSync: If you want variable refresh, verify that the display supports FreeSync through the chosen port and note any limits in its manual.
  • CEC: HDMI CEC can be useful in a TV setup, but behavior depends on the television and its settings.
  • Size and viewing distance: A desk monitor and a living-room TV create different viewing distances and interface needs; choose the panel size accordingly.
  • Cable path: Measure the distance from Steam Machine to the display. Long or poorly routed cables can create avoidable connection problems, so plan the route before mounting equipment.

Connect Steam Machine to a 1440p monitor or TV

  1. Shut down or leave the system at the SteamOS desktop or interface. Place Steam Machine where the selected cable can reach without strain.
  2. Choose one video output. Use HDMI 2.0 for a compatible HDMI display, or DisplayPort 1.4 for a compatible DisplayPort monitor. Connect the cable directly between Steam Machine and the display’s matching input.
  3. Power the display and Steam Machine. Use the display’s input control to select the physical HDMI or DisplayPort socket used in the previous step. Displays with several identical inputs may label them HDMI 1, HDMI 2 or similar.
  4. Wait for the SteamOS interface. If the display shows an input status message first, give it a moment to complete signal detection. Avoid changing several settings at once; identifying the active input is easier when the connection is simple.
  5. Sign in to Steam. Your Steam library and account services become available after authentication. Follow the current prompts shown on your system rather than relying on an old menu guide, because interface labels can change.
  6. Confirm the active resolution. Use the display’s information panel, if it has one, and the available SteamOS or game display settings to verify that the signal is 2560×1440. The exact menu wording can vary by SteamOS build and display, so this guide does not prescribe an unverified click path.
  7. Set the refresh rate deliberately. Select a rate that the display supports at 2560×1440. If a high rate is unavailable, check the display’s port specification and cable connection before assuming Steam Machine is at fault.
  8. Enable optional display features only after the basic signal works. Turn on HDR or FreeSync in the display and system/game settings when the display supports them. Test one feature at a time so a black screen or color change can be traced to a specific setting.

Finish the first-use SteamOS decisions

Use the TV-friendly interface when appropriate

For a couch setup, Steam’s Big Picture interface is designed for television use and can be operated with a controller or with a keyboard and mouse. Valve’s guide explains the TV connection and interface approach at Big Picture: Connecting the dots. Start Big Picture after the video signal is stable, then navigate the library from the seating position you will actually use.

Pair a controller

Steam Machine includes a built-in wireless adapter for Steam Controllers. Valve says one adapter supports up to four Steam Controllers. Pair the controller according to the current on-screen instructions, keeping the first pairing close to the system. If you use a different controller or a keyboard and mouse, connect it using the method supported by that device and confirm input in the Steam interface before launching a game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand suspend and cloud saves

SteamOS includes quick suspend/resume and cloud-save functionality among its advertised features. Suspend can be convenient in a living room, while cloud saves help keep progress available on other supported systems. Neither feature changes the game’s rendering resolution; they are session and account conveniences.

Check whether a game is a good 1440p candidate

Open the game’s current Steam Machine Verified information before making a performance promise to yourself. Valve says the program is intended to help customers understand how their games will run on Steam Machine. Treat the rating as a compatibility and experience aid, not as a guarantee that every scene, graphics preset or refresh-rate target will behave identically.

Use the rating as a starting point

  • Check the current rating for the exact game in your library.
  • Read any notes attached to the rating, especially if they identify controller, interface or configuration issues.
  • Do not infer performance from the presence of an HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 port. Port bandwidth and game rendering workload are separate questions.
  • If a title is important to you, look for a current, game-specific performance test before buying it. The official specification does not provide a universal 1440p frame-rate result.

Set the game’s own display mode

Launch the title and open its video or graphics settings. Select 2560×1440 if the game lists it, then choose a refresh rate that your display and connection actually support. Apply the change and verify the image on the display’s information panel when possible. Some games use a separate window mode or require a restart after resolution changes; follow the prompt shown by that game.

Start with the game’s recommended or default preset, then adjust only what you need. A title may render at 1440p but still fluctuate below your preferred frame rate, especially in busy scenes. If that happens, lower demanding in-game options or select a lower resolution; the correct compromise depends on the individual game and your priorities. There is no official, game-independent setting that guarantees a particular frame rate on Steam Machine.

HDMI or DisplayPort: a practical decision

Choose HDMI 2.0 for a compatible TV-first setup

HDMI is often the simplest route when the display is a television, because TVs commonly provide HDMI inputs and the Big Picture interface is designed for that environment. HDMI also carries the CEC feature listed by Valve, which may be useful for compatible television control. Confirm that the particular HDMI input supports 2560×1440 at your desired refresh rate; the presence of an HDMI socket alone does not establish that.

Choose DisplayPort 1.4 for a monitor-first setup

DisplayPort is a natural option when your monitor exposes DisplayPort and its specification gives you the refresh rate you want at 1440p. Valve lists higher maximum modes for this output, but those maxima do not predict a game’s frame rate. Use the cable length and routing that suit your desk, and avoid adapters unless you have verified that the adapter supports the exact resolution, refresh rate and features you need.

When both are available

Compare the display’s input-specific mode table, HDR and FreeSync support, cable placement and the controls you prefer. Because Valve lists HDR and FreeSync for both outputs, the deciding factor is usually the display’s implementation and your physical layout rather than a universal advantage of one connector.

Troubleshoot common 1440p setup problems

The display says no signal

  • Confirm that the cable is fully inserted at both ends.
  • Use the display’s input selector to choose the exact socket in use.
  • Try the other Steam Machine output only if the display has the corresponding input and you can verify that connection.
  • Remove intermediate switches, capture devices or adapters while diagnosing the direct connection.
  • Power-cycle the display and Steam Machine, then allow the display to complete signal detection before changing settings.

2560×1440 is not offered

Check the display manual for whether that resolution is supported on the selected input and at the desired refresh rate. A television may support 1440p on one HDMI input but not another. Recheck the cable path and make sure the system is connected to the intended port. If the display is 4K-only or exposes a restricted set of modes, use one of its supported modes rather than forcing an unsupported combination.

The refresh rate is lower than expected

Refresh rate is negotiated between Steam Machine, the cable, the input and the display. Confirm the display’s 2560×1440 limits for that port, then review the available system and game choices. A display’s headline maximum may apply only at another resolution or through another connector.

HDR or FreeSync does not activate

First establish a stable 2560×1440 signal without optional features. Then enable HDR or FreeSync in the display and the relevant system or game controls, one at a time. If a feature remains unavailable, consult the display’s input-specific documentation; Valve’s listing confirms support at the output level, while the display determines which modes it accepts.

The controller is not responding in Big Picture

Keep the controller near Steam Machine during pairing, confirm that its battery or power state is adequate, and retry the current pairing procedure shown by SteamOS. Test with a keyboard and mouse so you can distinguish a controller-link problem from a video or Steam sign-in problem. The built-in adapter’s stated capacity is up to four Steam Controllers, not a guarantee that every third-party controller uses the same pairing method.

The game runs but does not feel smooth at 1440p

Recheck the game’s Steam Machine Verified information and its own frame-rate or graphics settings. A 1440p output can be stable while the game renders frames unevenly. Lower demanding options or choose a different mode for that title, and judge the result in the scenes where you actually play rather than from the connector specification.

Hardware context for planning your setup

Valve’s listing describes Steam Machine as using a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor with 6 cores and 12 threads, a semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics processor, 16GB of DDR5 system memory and 8GB of GDDR6 video memory. It runs SteamOS 3. These figures describe the configuration, not a 1440p benchmark, and Valve says some specifications may change before availability.

Configuration detail What Valve lists Why it matters to a 1440p setup
CPU Semi-custom AMD Zen 4, 6 cores/12 threads Provides the system-processing context for games, but does not determine a universal frame rate.
GPU Semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 Handles rendering; actual 1440p results vary by game, settings and scene.
Memory 16GB DDR5 plus 8GB GDDR6 VRAM Separates system and graphics-memory figures in the listed configuration.
Operating system SteamOS 3 Provides the Steam-focused interface, library access and the TV-oriented experience.
Storage choices 512GB or 2TB NVMe versions, with microSD expansion Determines how many large games you can keep installed; storage capacity does not raise the display resolution.

The listing gives the two storage configurations but does not settle a single price, launch date, delivery schedule or purchase eligibility for every region. Check the live Valve page for those details immediately before ordering.

What this guide can and cannot promise

You can establish a 2560×1440 signal by matching a capable display, input and cable to one of Steam Machine’s listed outputs. You cannot establish a universal 1440p frame-rate guarantee from the connector specification. Game engines, visual settings, patches and scenes differ, so use the current Steam Machine Verified information and, when necessary, a current test of the specific game.

Valve characterizes Steam Machine as an extension of PC gaming rather than a conventional console. That distinction explains why the setup has a simple living-room path but still asks you to make PC-style choices about display modes and per-game settings.
