DNS sends app.example.com and blog.example.com to the Nginx host; Nginx reads the request’s Host header, selects the matching server_name, and appends the request URI to that block’s root. With exact hostnames, correctly included configuration files, readable directories, and a reload after validation, the two subdomains can serve entirely separate sites from the same server and port.

Arecord,AAAArecord, or another appropriate record directs each subdomain to the address of the Nginx host. - Virtual-server selection: After the request reaches Nginx, its
Hostheader is compared with theserver_namedirectives of servers listening on that address and port. - Filesystem mapping: The selected block’s
rootis the base directory. Nginx adds the request URI to that base when looking for a file.
For example, a request for http://app.example.com/images/logo.png and a root of /var/www/app.example.com/public maps to /var/www/app.example.com/public/images/logo.png. The same URI on blog.example.com is resolved below the blog block’s root instead. The URI is not shared between blocks merely because the hostnames share a parent domain.
Nginx chooses among exact names, wildcard names, and regular-expression names according to its documented matching order. If no intended name matches, the request can land in the default server for that listen address and port. That is the usual reason a correctly typed subdomain shows a generic Nginx page.

Choose a directory and configuration layout
For a small, known set of subdomains, one server block per hostname is the clearest design. Keep public files in separate directories and keep configuration files easy to identify:
| Purpose | Example path |
|---|---|
| Application document root | /var/www/app.example.com/public |
| Blog document root | /var/www/blog.example.com/public |
| Application server block | /etc/nginx/conf.d/app.example.com.conf |
| Blog server block | /etc/nginx/conf.d/blog.example.com.conf |
Linux installations commonly keep the main configuration under /etc/nginx and include feature-specific files from a directory such as /etc/nginx/conf.d. The exact include path depends on the distribution and on the active nginx.conf; a file sitting on disk has no effect unless it is included from the active http context.
Use names that identify the hostname rather than generic names such as site1.conf. This makes it easier to find the right file during an outage and reduces the chance of editing one subdomain while believing you edited another.
Build the directories and test files
Create each root and put unmistakably different content in it before troubleshooting DNS or application code. The following shell example creates the two public directories and simple test pages:

sudo sh -c 'printf "<h1>Blog subdomain</h1>n" > /var/www/blog.example.com/public/index.html'
Replace the test pages with the real site files when routing is confirmed. The Nginx worker account must be able to traverse every parent directory and read the files below the root. Set ownership and permissions according to your operating system’s service account and your deployment policy; do not make the whole tree world-writable as a shortcut.
- Each parent directory needs execute (traverse) permission for the worker account or one of its groups.
- HTML, CSS, image, and script files need read permission.
- Directories that receive uploads or generated content should be handled separately from the read-only public tree.
Publish the DNS records
Create a DNS record for every hostname you intend to serve. An A record maps an IPv4 name, while an AAAA record maps an IPv6 name. Point them at the address that accepts traffic for this Nginx installation. If your environment uses another DNS arrangement, use the equivalent record type that resolves the names to the host.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Check both the record and the address that clients actually receive. DNS caches and propagation can make a new or changed record appear inconsistent for a while. During that period, a browser may still contact an old host, so verify the resolved address before changing Nginx to fix a problem that is actually DNS-related.
Write one exact server block per subdomain
A minimal static configuration looks like this:
server {
listen 80;
server_name app.example.com;
root /var/www/app.example.com/public;
index index.html;
}
server {
listen 80;
server_name blog.example.com;
root /var/www/blog.example.com/public;
index index.html;
}
Both blocks may listen on the same address and port. The exact server_name tells Nginx which block should handle each hostname, while the different root directives keep their files separate. The index directive tells Nginx which file to try when a directory URL is requested.

Why exact names are preferable here
Use an exact name for every production hostname when deterministic routing matters. A wildcard such as *.example.com can be useful for a deliberately uniform fleet, but it can also catch a name that you expected to route elsewhere. Regular-expression names are more flexible still and therefore easier to misread. An exact block makes the relationship between hostname and directory visible in one place.
When a consolidated file is reasonable
You can place several server blocks in one included file; Nginx treats the blocks independently. A separate file per subdomain is usually easier to delegate, review, disable, or audit. A consolidated file can be practical when the sites are deployed together and share common settings, but keep each block’s server_name and root explicit rather than relying on inherited values that obscure the mapping.
Make sure Nginx actually includes the files
Inspect the active main configuration and confirm that its http context includes the directory or files you edited. Common layouts include an include pattern for /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf; other distributions use a sites-enabled directory or a different pattern. Do not assume a distribution’s convention applies to every installation.
Two files with valid syntax can still be ignored if the include directive does not reach them. Conversely, an old file may still be active and define the same hostname. When two blocks claim the same name, identify all active definitions before deciding which one Nginx is using.

Validate, reload, and verify in a controlled order
- Check syntax: Run the configuration test supplied by your installation, commonly
sudo nginx -t. Fix every reported error before reloading. - Reload the service: Use the operating system’s service manager to reload Nginx, for example
sudo systemctl reload nginxon systems managed by systemd. A reload applies configuration without requiring a full stop/start cycle; use the service manager appropriate to your platform. - Test by hostname: Open both URLs or request them with an HTTP client and look for the distinctive text in each test page.
- Check the response: Confirm the status code, the returned
Host, and the page body. A successful connection to the IP alone does not prove that the intended virtual server was selected.
If DNS is not live yet, test routing by sending the intended host header to the server’s IP. For example:
curl -i -H 'Host: app.example.com' http://203.0.113.10/
curl -i -H 'Host: blog.example.com' http://203.0.113.10/
Replace the example address with the Nginx host’s address. This test bypasses public DNS while still exercising Nginx’s hostname matching. For HTTPS, test against the TLS endpoint with the correct name and certificate handling; an HTTP Host-header test alone does not validate TLS name selection.

Understand URI-to-file mapping
The root directive does not name one file; it names a directory base. Nginx appends the request URI to that base. With:
root /var/www/app.example.com/public;
| Request | Filesystem path Nginx checks |
|---|---|
/ |
/var/www/app.example.com/public/, then the configured index file |
/images/logo.png |
/var/www/app.example.com/public/images/logo.png |
/css/site.css |
/var/www/app.example.com/public/css/site.css |
A 404 therefore usually means that the requested URI does not correspond to a file below the selected root, or that an application route needs a separate fallback configuration. It is different from a default-page problem: the default page indicates that a different server block may have handled the request, while a 404 from the intended block indicates a path or application issue.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
root versus application proxying
Static sites can be served directly from root. A dynamic application may instead run on another local port or socket and require a proxy_pass location. In that design, the subdomain still needs its own server_name, but the response is generated by the upstream application rather than by a file under the document root. Do not add a proxy directive merely because two subdomains exist; choose direct file serving or proxying based on the architecture of each site.
Add HTTPS without losing the hostname separation
HTTP and HTTPS are separate listen contexts. For secure traffic, create HTTPS server blocks that use the same exact hostnames and the appropriate certificates and TLS settings for those names. Keep the HTTPS root for each site aligned with its HTTP counterpart, or deliberately redirect HTTP to the corresponding HTTPS hostname. Test each name independently: a certificate or default TLS server selected for one hostname does not prove that the other hostname is configured correctly.

Diagnose the common failures
The browser shows the default Nginx page
- Check that the browser requested the intended hostname, not the server IP or a misspelled subdomain.
- Confirm the
server_nameexactly matches the name in the URL, including spelling and the presence or absence of awwwprefix. - Verify that the configuration file is included by the active
httpconfiguration. - Look for an enabled default server on the same listen address and port. If the request does not match your name, Nginx can fall through to that server.
- Re-run the syntax test and reload after every corrected edit.
You receive a 404
- Confirm which hostname was selected, then calculate the expected path by appending the URI to that block’s
root. - Check capitalization, spelling, and URL encoding in the requested path.
- Verify that the file exists below the root and that the index filename matches the
indexdirective. - If the site is an application, determine whether its routes require a fallback or an upstream proxy rather than a physical file.
You receive “permission denied”
- Inspect permissions on every directory from the filesystem root to the requested file; the worker must be able to traverse each one.
- Inspect file ownership and read bits for the Nginx worker account or its groups.
- Check any mandatory access-control policy used by the operating system, if applicable.
- Correct the specific ownership or permission issue instead of granting broad write access to the public tree.
Edits appear to be ignored
- Make sure you edited the file that the active include pattern reads.
- Run the configuration test and read its complete output.
- Reload Nginx after a successful test; saving a file does not alter running workers by itself.
- Check for another active block defining the same hostname or a more specific configuration that changes the behavior.
- Rule out browser, reverse-proxy, and DNS caches by using an HTTP client and checking the resolved address.
A wildcard captures an unexpected name
Review every exact, wildcard, and regular-expression server_name and their matching priority. Replace an overly broad wildcard with exact names when the set of production subdomains is known. Keep catch-all behavior intentional and document which names it is meant to serve.
Compare the main design choices
| Decision | Option A | Option B | Operational consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostname matching | Exact names | Wildcard or regular expression | Exact names are easiest to audit; patterns reduce repetition but can capture names unexpectedly. |
| Configuration files | One file per subdomain | Several blocks in one file | Separate files improve ownership and isolation; one file can simplify coordinated deployments. |
| Content delivery | Static root |
Proxied application | Static serving maps URIs to files; proxying sends requests to an upstream service and needs application-specific settings. |
| Transport | HTTP only | HTTPS blocks and certificates | HTTP is simpler for a local test; production traffic generally needs separately tested TLS host routing. |
These choices are independent. For example, you can use exact names, separate files, direct static roots, and HTTPS together, or exact names with an upstream application for only one subdomain.
A repeatable checklist for each new subdomain
- Choose a unique directory such as
/var/www/name.example.com/public. - Place a distinctive test file in that directory.
- Set ownership and traversal/read permissions for the Nginx worker.
- Create the DNS record that points the hostname to the Nginx host.
- Add a server block with the exact
server_name, uniqueroot, and appropriateindex. - Confirm the file is included from the active Nginx
httpconfiguration. - Run
nginx -tor the equivalent configuration test. - Reload Nginx through the service manager.
- Request the hostname and verify its distinctive content.
- Test a real asset path, an absent path, and (if enabled) the HTTPS endpoint.
Following the same sequence keeps DNS, virtual-server selection, filesystem permissions, and content testing separate. When a request fails, that separation tells you whether to inspect the name resolution, the selected block, the URI mapping, or the file access itself.
