After registration, use Find My > Items to view its map location, get directions, play a sound, or use Find Nearby when your iPhone supports Ultra Wideband. This guide covers setup, offline locations, pairing errors, battery replacement, account transfers, sharing, and what to do if an unknown AirTag appears to be traveling with you.
What you need before setting up an AirTag
Have an iPhone with Bluetooth and Location Services available, an Apple Account, and the AirTag in its original condition. The setup phone must be signed in to the Apple Account that will own the item. An AirTag can be registered to only one Apple Account at a time, although the owner can share an AirTag with other people.

- Remove the packaging: take off the product wrapping and pull out the battery tab so the tag can power on.
- Keep the phone nearby: pairing begins over Bluetooth when the AirTag is close to the iPhone.
- Check software compatibility: an AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS 26.2.1 or later.
- Plan the item name: use a distinct label and emoji if you own several tags, such as “Backpack,” “Keys,” or “Camera case.”
How to set up an AirTag
- Remove the AirTag’s wrapping and battery tab.
- Hold the AirTag near your iPhone.
- Wake the iPhone and go to the Home Screen. A setup card should appear.
- Tap Connect.
- Choose one of the suggested names, or select a custom name. Pick an emoji when prompted.
- Tap Continue to register the AirTag to your Apple Account.
- Tap Finish when registration completes.
The name and emoji identify the item in Find My, so use a label that will still make sense if you own several tags. Registration is complete only after the Apple Account step finishes. You can share access later without changing the registered owner.
If the setup card does not appear
Turn the iPhone screen off and back on, then bring the AirTag close to the phone again. This is Apple’s retry procedure for pairing. If the tag still does not appear, confirm that the battery tab was removed and that the iPhone has Bluetooth enabled. Keep the tag close while the Home Screen is visible. A tag that reports ownership by another Apple Account cannot be claimed from the setup screen; the previous owner must remove it first.

Track an AirTag in Find My
- Open the Find My app.
- Tap Items.
- Select the AirTag’s item name.
The item page can show the tag on a map, provide directions, play a sound, or offer nearby distance and direction guidance. Select the action that fits the situation rather than repeatedly refreshing the map.
Use the map and directions
The map shows the location information currently available to Find My. Tap the directions control to open a route to the displayed position. A map position is not a guarantee that the tag is still there: the tag may have moved since its last report, or the displayed point may be a previously recorded location. Treat the map as a lead, then use sound or nearby guidance when you reach the area.
Play a sound
Tap Play Sound on the item page to make the AirTag emit chimes. Use this when you are close enough to hear it, such as when looking through a room, bag, vehicle, or pile of clothing. Walls, furniture, containers, and other objects can make the sound harder to hear. Move slowly through the displayed area and pause between sound attempts so a quiet chime is easier to notice.
Use Find Nearby (Precision Finding)
When the option is available, tap Find Nearby and follow the onscreen distance and direction cues. The iPhone vibrates as you approach the tag, while the display guides you toward it. Apple lists iPhone 15 and later for this feature because it requires a supported Ultra Wideband iPhone.
Find Nearby is not a universal AirTag range indicator. It is a close-proximity finding mode and can be affected by walls and other obstructions. If the control is missing, enable Location Services and Precise Location for Find My, update iOS, and try again. You can still use the map and Play Sound without Find Nearby.
Why Find My shows an old location or “No location found”
An AirTag does not have a cellular connection of its own. Its position is reported when it communicates over Bluetooth with nearby Apple devices participating in the Find My network. Apple describes that network as more than a billion Apple devices that detect and report approximate accessory locations anonymously and with encryption.
Last known location
Find My can retain a last known position when a current report is unavailable. Apple says that last location may remain visible for up to seven days. It is a historical position, not proof that the tag is still at that place. A moving item can therefore appear to remain at an old address until another participating device detects it.

After seven days without a report
If more than seven days pass since the device last sent its location to Apple through the Find My network, Find My displays No location found. At that point, the map cannot provide a newer position until the AirTag is detected and reported again. The message does not by itself prove that the tag is broken; it can mean the tag has been isolated from the network.
Checks to perform
- Inspect the battery: a depleted or incorrectly installed battery prevents the tag from reporting.
- Check Bluetooth: Bluetooth must be enabled on the iPhone for nearby interaction.
- Enable Location Services: Find My needs location access to provide map and nearby-finding functions.
- Update software: install the latest iOS version supported by the iPhone; AirTag (2nd generation) specifically requires iOS 26.2.1 or later.
- Consider the elapsed time: a tag that has not encountered a reporting Apple device for over seven days will show no location rather than an old one.
These checks cannot create a location where no participating device has detected the tag. If the AirTag is in a remote area, inside a shielded container, or away from people carrying Apple devices, the map may remain stale until network contact occurs.
Troubleshoot setup, tracking, and nearby-finding problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No setup card appears | The battery tab is still installed, the AirTag is too far away, or the iPhone needs to retry pairing. | Confirm the tab was removed, hold the tag next to the iPhone, and turn the iPhone screen off and on before trying again. |
| Setup says the AirTag belongs to another account | The previous owner has not released it. | Ask that owner to remove it from Find My. You cannot register it while it remains associated with another Apple Account. |
| The AirTag is not listed in Items | Registration did not complete, software is outdated, or the tag has been removed. | Verify that setup reached Finish, update iOS, and repeat setup only after confirming account ownership. |
| Find Nearby is missing | The iPhone lacks supported Ultra Wideband hardware, Precise Location is off, or iOS is out of date. | Use an iPhone 15 or later, enable Location Services and Precise Location for Find My, update iOS, or use the map and Play Sound. |
| The map has no current position | The tag has not recently been detected by the Find My network, or its battery is depleted. | Check the battery and wait for a network report; an old position can remain for up to seven days. |
| Find My says No location found | More than seven days have passed since the last network report. | Search the last known area if practical and check again after the tag is likely to encounter Apple devices. |
| Sound cannot be heard | The tag is hidden, obstructed, or out of audible range. | Move through the displayed location, reduce surrounding noise, and use Find Nearby if supported. |
A practical troubleshooting order
Start with the simplest physical checks: confirm the AirTag is present, the battery tab has been removed, and the cover is closed. Next verify Bluetooth and Location Services on the iPhone, then install available software updates. Reopen Find My > Items and select the tag. If a map appears, try directions first, then sound, and finally Find Nearby when the iPhone supports it. This order separates an ownership or setup problem from a network-reporting delay.
Replace an AirTag battery safely
Use a CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery. Install it with the positive side facing up. Apple warns that AirTag coin cells can cause severe injury or death if swallowed; keep both new and used batteries away from children. A swallowed button cell can cause internal chemical burns in as little as two hours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press down on the polished stainless-steel cover.
- Rotate the cover counterclockwise until it stops.
- Lift off the cover and remove the old battery.
- Insert the new CR2032 battery with its positive (+) side facing up.
- Listen for the connection sound, which confirms the battery is making contact.
- Align the cover’s three tabs with the three slots in the AirTag.
- Press down and rotate the cover clockwise until it closes.
Do not leave a loose coin cell, removed cover, or old battery where a child or pet can reach it. If the tag does not make the connection sound, reopen the cover, confirm the battery orientation and contact surfaces, and close it again. Dispose of the old cell according to local battery-recycling rules rather than leaving it loose in household waste.
Remove an AirTag or transfer it to another account
Because an AirTag can belong to only one Apple Account at a time, remove it from the current account before another person attempts setup. Sharing is different from transferring: sharing lets other people access the item while the original account remains the owner.
- Open Find My.
- Tap Items.
- Select the AirTag.
- Bring the AirTag near the iPhone when possible.
- Tap the More button.
- Choose Remove and follow the prompts.
If you remove the AirTag while it is away from the iPhone, it must be reset before a different Apple Account can register it. The previous owner should therefore remove the item while the tag is available whenever possible. Removing an item from your list does not give another account access until the tag’s ownership state has been cleared according to Apple’s process.

What to do if an unknown AirTag is following you
Unwanted-tracking notifications are supported for AirTags on iPhone and iPad running iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later. Apple and Google also established an industry standard that allows iPhone, iPad, and Android users to receive alerts about an unknown compatible tracker traveling with them.
Turn on the protections on iPhone or iPad
- Enable Location Services.
- In System Services, enable Find My iPhone.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Enable Tracking Notifications.
- Turn off Airplane Mode.
These settings allow the device to receive the relevant unwanted-tracker alerts. A notification is not proof of malicious intent; an AirTag could belong to a family member, colleague, or someone whose item is traveling with yours. Treat the alert seriously while checking the circumstances.
Respond to an alert
- Tap the unwanted-tracking notification.
- Tap Continue.
- Choose Play Sound or Find Nearby when offered.
- Search your clothing, bag, vehicle, and other belongings for the tag.
- Hold an iPhone near the found AirTag to view its serial number and the last four digits of the registered phone number or an obfuscated email address.
- Take screenshots of the alert and identifying information before disabling the item.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to disable the AirTag.
If you feel unsafe, do not confront a suspected person or search in an isolated place. Move to a safe public location and contact law enforcement. Apple says law enforcement may work with Apple using the AirTag’s serial number and the tag itself. Preserve the screenshots and the physical tag if authorities request them.
AirTag capabilities and limits
| Capability | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Apple Account ownership | One Apple Account can register a tag at a time; sharing lets other people access the item without changing its registered owner. |
| Find My integration | The Items tab combines map location, directions, sound playback, and nearby-finding controls in one place. |
| Precision Finding | Find Nearby uses supported Ultra Wideband iPhones; Apple lists iPhone 15 and later. |
| Crowdsourced reporting | Nearby Apple devices can detect the Bluetooth signal and send an approximate location through the anonymous, encrypted Find My network of more than a billion devices. |
| Replaceable power | The user-accessible CR2032 lithium 3V coin cell can be replaced without replacing the AirTag, so ongoing battery expense is limited to replacement coin cells. |
| Cross-platform safety alerts | Unwanted-tracker notification guidance covers iPhone, iPad, and Android users through the Apple-Google industry standard. |
| Not a guaranteed live locator | Location freshness depends on battery status and encounters with participating devices; no authoritative operating range or accuracy percentage is specified here. |
How AirTag compares with other Bluetooth trackers
Choose a tracker by matching its ecosystem to the phones that will actually be used. AirTag is designed around Apple Account ownership and the Find My network. Its documented advantages are deep Find My integration, Precision Finding on supported iPhones, a replaceable CR2032 cell, sharing, and unwanted-tracker guidance that also addresses Android users. When comparing another tracker, check the following rather than relying on a claimed range number:
- Phone and account compatibility: confirm whether setup requires an Apple Account, another platform account, or a specific app.
- Nearby-finding hardware: determine whether the tracker offers directional finding and which phones have the required Ultra Wideband hardware.
- Network coverage: compare how many nearby devices can anonymously report a Bluetooth sighting in the places the item travels.
- Battery and cost: check whether the cell is replaceable, which battery type it uses, and the recurring cost of replacements.
- Attachment options: consider whether the accessory ecosystem fits keys, luggage, bicycles, bags, or other items.
- Sharing and separation alerts: verify whether multiple people can access an item and what alerts appear when a tracker is separated from its owner.
- Unknown-tracker protections: check whether people on both iPhone and Android can receive unwanted-tracking notifications.
AirTag has no documented universal operating range or guaranteed location-accuracy percentage in Apple’s guidance. Any comparison that presents those figures as guarantees should be treated cautiously.
A practical checklist for a reliable setup
- Remove the wrapping and battery tab before bringing the tag to the iPhone.
- Complete both the Continue registration step and the final Finish step.
- Use a distinct name and emoji so the tag is easy to identify in Find My > Items.
- Keep Bluetooth and Location Services available when you need nearby controls.
- Use an iPhone 15 or later for Find Nearby; otherwise rely on the map and sound.
- Replace the battery with a CR2032 lithium 3V cell, positive side up, and store coin cells securely.
- If transferring ownership, remove the tag from the old Apple Account before starting setup on the new one.
- If an unknown-tracker alert appears, document the serial information and seek a safe location if you feel threatened.
