The reliable Ubuntu VPS pattern is: run your Python application as a non-root user inside its virtual environment, have uWSGI serve it through a Unix socket, supervise uWSGI with systemd, and let Nginx proxy requests to that same socket. Build and test each layer in that order. If the VPS hosts several applications, use uWSGI Emperor mode with one vassal configuration per application instead of putting unrelated processes into one unit.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What the deployment looks like
A request moves through four components:
- Nginx accepts the HTTP connection and handles the public-facing web-server role.
- uWSGI loads your application module, maintains worker processes, and speaks the uWSGI protocol.
- A Unix socket under
/run/uwsgi/connects Nginx to uWSGI without exposing a public TCP listener. - systemd starts uWSGI at boot, restarts it according to the unit policy, and records its output in the journal.
The application and uWSGI must use the same Python virtual environment. Nginx must be able to access the socket, and the socket path in the uWSGI INI file must exactly match the path in the Nginx configuration. A mismatch at any one of those boundaries produces a failure even when the other components are healthy.

Choose a deployment design before creating files
One application: a standalone systemd unit
For one application, create one virtual environment, one uWSGI INI file, and one systemd unit. This is the simplest arrangement to audit: the unit identifies the process, the INI file describes the application, and Nginx points to one socket.
Several applications: Emperor and vassals
When one VPS hosts multiple uWSGI applications, run an Emperor process that watches a vassals directory. Each application gets its own vassal configuration and its own least-privileged user and group where practical. A new configuration file starts a vassal, a modified file reloads that application, and removing the file stops the vassal. This keeps application lifecycle changes independent.

The uWSGI systemd guidance states: Do not daemonize the Emperor (or the master) unless you know what you are doing!!!
Let systemd own the foreground process instead of adding a second, competing daemonization layer.
Unix socket or TCP socket
| Connection | When it fits | Security and operations |
|---|---|---|
Unix socket under /run/uwsgi/ |
Nginx and uWSGI run on the same VPS | Local-only by design; access is controlled with filesystem owner, group, and mode. The path must be recreated correctly at boot. |
| Loopback TCP socket | You deliberately need a local TCP endpoint or a layout that cannot use a filesystem socket | Bind to loopback unless there is a specific reason to listen elsewhere, and ensure the Nginx uwsgi_pass target uses the same address and port. |
The official Nginx example uses uwsgi_pass localhost:9000;. A Unix socket is usually the clearer default for a single-host installation because it avoids opening a network listener. Do not expose a uWSGI TCP port publicly just because Nginx can reach it.
Prepare a non-root application account
Create the account and application directory
Use a dedicated deployment or service account rather than running the application as root. Give it ownership of the application code and the virtual environment, and grant only the filesystem access the application actually needs. Keep configuration containing secrets outside directories that Nginx serves as static files.
The exact account-creation and package commands depend on the Ubuntu release and the application framework. Verify those details for the target VPS rather than copying a release-specific command blindly. The invariant is that the account used by uWSGI is not root and that its home, code, logs, and runtime permissions are intentional.
Create and verify the virtual environment
- From the application directory, create a Python virtual environment with the Python interpreter selected for the application.
- Install the application dependencies and uWSGI into that environment.
- Activate the environment or use its absolute paths while testing so that the shell and systemd do not accidentally select a different interpreter.
- Run
which uwsgiwhile the environment is active. Record the resulting absolute path; use that path in the systemdExecStartline. - Import the application using the same environment and working directory that uWSGI will use. Fix missing modules, environment variables, and import-path errors before involving Nginx.
Successful installation is not proof that the application can load. An import test in the intended environment catches the most common failure earlier than a browser request does.

Write the uWSGI INI file
Set the application identity
Create an INI file in a root-owned configuration location, with read access granted to the service account as needed. Set the application module to the import path and callable expected by your framework. For a WSGI application this is commonly expressed as a module and callable such as myapp.wsgi:application; use the exact import path your project defines rather than copying that example.
Set the working directory to the project directory. This makes relative imports and relative file paths deterministic when systemd starts uWSGI, because systemd does not launch the process from your interactive shell’s current directory.
Point uWSGI at the virtual environment
Configure the INI file with the virtualenv path used during the import test. The uWSGI executable itself should also come from that environment, as confirmed by which uwsgi. Keeping both aligned prevents a system-wide uWSGI binary from loading packages that exist only in the application’s environment.
Enable the master and choose workers deliberately
Enable uWSGI’s master process so it can manage workers and perform orderly reloads. Set the worker count for the VPS’s available memory and CPU capacity, and change it only after observing the application’s behavior. There is no universally correct number: an oversized value can exhaust memory, while an undersized value can limit concurrency. Treat the count as an operational setting, not a magic constant.
Define the socket and permissions
Use a Unix socket path under /run/uwsgi/, for example /run/uwsgi/myapp.sock. Configure its owner, group, and mode so the Nginx service account can connect while unrelated users cannot. Determine the actual Nginx account from the Nginx configuration on the VPS; do not assume a username when the image or hardening policy may differ.

The runtime directory is volatile: it is normally recreated during boot, unlike a directory under your application tree. That is why the systemd unit should manage the directory when the Ubuntu systemd version supports RuntimeDirectory=uwsgi. Ensure the resulting directory and socket permissions still match your least-privilege policy after a reboot.
Keep the process in the foreground
Do not add a daemonizing option to an instance that systemd is supervising. systemd needs to track the process it started; a child that detaches can leave systemd reporting the wrong state and can interfere with restart and shutdown behavior.
Create the systemd service
Build the unit around the INI file
Create a unit whose ExecStart invokes the absolute uWSGI binary from the virtual environment with the INI file as its argument. Set the service user and group to the non-root application identity, set the working directory consistently with the INI file, and add the required environment variables through the unit or a protected environment file.
uWSGI’s documentation describes it as a new-style daemon for systemd.
Use systemd’s supervision rather than asking uWSGI to detach itself.
Use readiness notification and a restart policy
Use Type=notify when the installed uWSGI build supports systemd notifications. Add a restart policy appropriate to the service so a failed process is brought back under supervision, while still investigating the underlying error instead of hiding a crash loop. Set RuntimeDirectory=uwsgi where supported, then verify the directory’s owner and mode after the unit starts.

Enable and inspect the unit
- Reload systemd’s unit definitions after creating or changing the file.
- Enable the unit for boot and start it.
- Run
systemctl status myapp.serviceand confirm that the main process is the expected uWSGI binary, the unit is active, and no import or socket error appears. - After every configuration change, inspect the unit’s journal output before testing from a browser.
Use your real unit name in place of myapp.service. If the unit fails immediately, run the uWSGI command manually as the service user with the same INI file; that often exposes a path or environment mistake more clearly than an HTTP 502.
Configure Nginx to proxy to uWSGI
Use the uWSGI protocol settings
In the relevant server block, include Nginx’s uWSGI parameter set with include uwsgi_params;. Set uwsgi_pass to the exact socket path from the INI file, such as unix:/run/uwsgi/myapp.sock;. If you intentionally chose loopback TCP instead, use the same loopback address and port configured in uWSGI.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Nginx is not speaking ordinary HTTP to a uWSGI socket. The include supplies the protocol parameters expected by the application server, while uwsgi_pass selects the upstream endpoint. A configuration that points to an HTTP port or uses a different socket path will fail even if uWSGI is running.
Validate access and reload
- Check that the Nginx configuration parses successfully before reloading Nginx.
- Reload Nginx and request the site locally through Nginx, using the server name and listening address configured for the VPS.
- If the response is a gateway error, inspect both the Nginx error log and the uWSGI journal. Look first for a missing socket, permission denial, or upstream-protocol mismatch.
Keep the uWSGI endpoint on a Unix socket or loopback while you test. Only after local proxying works should you apply the VPS provider’s firewall policy and expose the site publicly with the TLS configuration appropriate to your deployment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the complete path before public exposure
- Application layer: the module imports successfully inside the same virtual environment used by uWSGI.
- uWSGI layer: the master and expected workers are running under the non-root account.
- Runtime layer: the socket exists below
/run/uwsgi/, has the expected owner and mode, and survives a service restart. - Proxy layer: Nginx uses
include uwsgi_params;and points to that exact socket or deliberately selected loopback endpoint. - Supervision layer:
systemctl statusreports an active unit and the journal contains no repeated crash or import failures. - Network layer: the application is still bound locally; only the intended Nginx listener is reachable from outside.
Perform the local test after each layer is changed. This narrows the fault domain and prevents a public request, a firewall rule, and a process restart from obscuring the original error.

Run several applications with Emperor mode
Organize the vassals directory
Configure one Emperor to watch a dedicated vassals directory. Put one INI file per application in that directory, with each file declaring its own module, working directory, virtual environment, socket, user, group, and worker policy. Use distinct socket names so Nginx cannot accidentally reach the wrong application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUnderstand file-driven lifecycle behavior
- Adding a vassal configuration starts that application.
- Editing a vassal configuration reloads the affected application.
- Removing a vassal configuration stops that application.
Give each application only the uid, gid, and filesystem permissions it needs. Keep the Emperor itself under systemd and in the foreground; do not combine systemd supervision with uWSGI daemonization unless you fully understand the resulting process tree.
When Emperor is the wrong choice
For a single application, a standalone unit is easier to reason about and troubleshoot. Emperor adds a useful lifecycle layer when applications share a VPS, but it also introduces another configuration directory and another level of logs. Choose it for isolation and repeatable multi-application management, not merely because the feature exists.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
| Symptom | Most useful checks | Likely correction |
|---|---|---|
| systemd unit exits during startup | Run systemctl status for the unit and inspect its journal; test the uWSGI command as the service user. |
Correct the binary path, working directory, virtualenv path, import module, or required environment variables. |
| Nginx returns a gateway error | Check whether the configured socket exists and compare the INI socket path with uwsgi_pass. |
Use one identical endpoint in both files, then reload the affected service. |
| Nginx reports permission denied | Inspect the runtime directory and socket owner, group, and mode; identify the account Nginx actually uses. | Grant the Nginx account the intended group access without making the socket world-writable. |
| Socket disappears after reboot | Check whether the runtime directory is being created by systemd and whether the unit starts successfully at boot. | Use RuntimeDirectory=uwsgi where supported and verify its ownership and permissions. |
| Application imports in a shell but not under uWSGI | Compare the shell’s interpreter, current directory, environment, and service account with the unit and INI settings. | Point both uWSGI and systemd at the tested virtual environment and set the correct working directory. |
| Repeated worker crashes or memory pressure | Review uWSGI and systemd logs and correlate failures with the configured worker count. | Fix the application error first, then size workers for the VPS rather than copying a count from another machine. |
Security and maintenance rules
- Never run the application as root; use a dedicated service identity.
- Keep uWSGI on a Unix socket or loopback unless a deliberate, documented network design requires a different bind address.
- Protect the socket with explicit owner, group, and mode settings. Avoid broad write permissions.
- Keep the uWSGI INI file and environment files protected if they contain credentials or internal paths.
- After every change, inspect systemd status, the journal, and the Nginx error log before declaring the deployment healthy.
- Apply TLS and firewall rules only after local Nginx-to-uWSGI traffic works; the exact certificate and firewall commands depend on the Ubuntu release, VPS provider, and chosen certificate workflow.
This separation of responsibilities makes failures diagnosable: systemd owns process lifetime, uWSGI owns application workers, Nginx owns HTTP ingress, and Unix permissions protect the local handoff.
