Choose the poll format before you start
YouTube offers two related but different ways to ask viewers a question during a live broadcast or Premiere:
- Live Chat poll: A poll card appears in the stream’s chat. Desktop, mobile chat, YouTube Studio, and encoder-based broadcasts can use this workflow.
- Mobile Poll sticker: The YouTube mobile app places a visual sticker over the live video. This is a separate presentation, not a different setting for the chat poll.
Use a chat poll when you want viewers to answer alongside the conversation. Use the sticker when the question should be visible on the video itself. Desktop YouTube Studio or encoder polls do not turn into mobile stickers; the documented sticker workflow requires the mobile app.

What YouTube polls can and cannot do

These limits affect how you phrase the question. Because votes are final, avoid ambiguous wording and check every option before publishing. If viewers need to make a second choice later, plan a new poll rather than expecting them to edit an earlier response. The 24-hour maximum is an upper limit, not a requirement: you can end a poll as soon as you have enough responses.

Create a chat poll on desktop
The desktop control is inside the chat window for the specific scheduled or active stream or Premiere. You do not create the poll from a general channel post or a separate polling page.
- Open the scheduled or live stream, or the Premiere, on YouTube while signed in to the channel that is hosting it.
- Locate the stream’s Live Chat window.
- At the bottom of the chat window, click Create a poll.
- Enter the poll question and add two to four answer options.
- Review the wording and order of the choices. Viewers cannot change their vote after submitting it.
- Publish the poll from the poll composer.
Once published, the poll appears in the live chat for viewers who can access that chat. Keep the stream or Premiere open while you monitor responses; the control is tied to that event’s chat rather than to your channel globally.

End a desktop chat poll
- Watch the top of the Live Chat window for the poll banner.
- Click End poll.
- After it ends, the results are shown in chat.
Ending the poll closes voting; it does not end the live stream. You can continue talking, start another poll later, or finish the event normally. Because the poll is not included in live chat replay, viewers who watch the archive will not see the original poll card in the replay transcript.

Create a chat poll in the YouTube mobile app
The mobile chat path uses the chat controls rather than the sticker editor. Start or open the live stream in the YouTube mobile app, then work from the bottom of its chat window.
- Open the live stream in the YouTube mobile app.
- Open the stream’s chat if it is not already visible.
- At the bottom of the chat window, tap Add.
- Tap Create a poll.
- Enter the question and two to four options.
- Publish the poll.
To close it, use End poll in the banner, just as on desktop. Ending from the mobile chat controls closes the chat poll; it does not switch the broadcast off or remove the chat itself.
The iPhone and iPad-specific instructions are in YouTube’s mobile Live Chat guide. Menu placement can vary slightly with app updates, but the documented sequence remains the chat’s Add control followed by Create a poll.
Put a poll on the video with the mobile Poll sticker
The mobile app’s Poll sticker is intended for an on-screen presentation. It is separate from the chat poll composer, so choose it only when you want the question to sit visibly over the video.
When the sticker is the right choice
- Use it for a quick decision you want viewers to notice without opening or reading chat.
- Place it where it does not cover gameplay information, subtitles, a face-cam, or other important overlays.
- Adjust its appearance for the scene: YouTube lets you customize the sticker’s text, color, size, and position.
Sticker workflow
- Start the live stream in the YouTube mobile app.
- Open the live controls that provide the sticker option and choose the Poll sticker.
- Enter the poll text and configure its color and size.
- Drag the sticker to the desired position on the video.
- Publish it so viewers can see the on-screen poll.
To end a sticker poll, drag the sticker to the trash. That gesture removes the on-screen poll. It is not the same action as clicking or tapping End poll on a chat poll.

The distinction matters when planning a production workflow: a poll created through desktop YouTube Studio or an encoder is a chat poll and does not become a mobile Poll sticker. YouTube’s Live Chat documentation covers chat controls, while the mobile live-stream guidance describes the mobile presentation options: Create a live stream on mobile.

Desktop chat poll versus mobile chat poll versus sticker

The first two rows collect votes in chat and follow the same two-to-four-option rules. The third is a visual overlay controlled from the mobile app. Selecting the wrong workflow is the most common reason a creator cannot find the presentation they expected.
Design a poll viewers can answer quickly
Keep one decision in each poll
Ask one clear question rather than combining several decisions. For a gaming stream, “Which loadout should we test next?” is easier to answer than a question that asks viewers to choose a loadout, map, and difficulty at once. A single decision also makes the result easier to act on during a fast broadcast.
Use mutually understandable options
Write options that do not overlap. If two answers could both describe the same choice, viewers may vote inconsistently and the result will be difficult to interpret. Keep the wording parallel and short enough to read in the chat card or sticker.

Account for irreversible votes
Since a submitted vote cannot be changed, explain any unusual rule before publishing. If the poll is a prediction, say what viewers are predicting. If it is a choice that will control your next segment, tell viewers that the leading option will be used. Do not promise to revise a vote that YouTube will not let them edit.
Close at a useful moment
You can end a poll immediately after enough viewers respond, at the end of a segment, or before the stream moves to a different topic. The platform allows up to 24 hours, but leaving an old question open while the broadcast changes subject can make the result less meaningful.
Eligibility and chat settings to check
Live Chat must be available
YouTube says Live Chat is on by default except when the stream’s audience is set as made for kids. If a poll control is missing, first confirm that the event is eligible for live chat and that chat has not been disabled for the stream. A poll cannot function as a chat card when the underlying chat is unavailable.

Mobile streaming has extra prerequisites
Creators using the mobile workflow must meet YouTube’s mobile live-stream requirements:

- No live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days.
- A verified channel.
- Live streaming turned on for the channel.
- A supported mobile device.
YouTube says a first mobile live stream may take up to 24 hours to become available after you enable the feature. That activation delay is separate from a poll’s 24-hour maximum duration. Enabling mobile streaming shortly before an event therefore may not leave enough time to use the mobile poll or sticker workflow.

“Create a poll” is not visible on desktop
- Confirm that you opened the chat for the intended scheduled stream, active stream, or Premiere rather than a different video page.
- Look at the bottom of the Live Chat window, where YouTube places the desktop control.
- Check whether the audience setting is made for kids; YouTube does not provide Live Chat by default for that setting.
- Verify that you are using the channel account that is hosting or managing the event.
“Create a poll” is missing on mobile
- Open the chat controls and use Add first; the poll command is nested under that control.
- Make sure you are in the YouTube mobile app and not viewing the stream in a mobile browser.
- Check the mobile live-stream prerequisites, including channel verification, subscriber count, restrictions, and activation status.
- Remember that the sticker editor is separate. If you want a chat poll, use Add > Create a poll; if you want an overlay, use the Poll sticker workflow.
The sticker does not appear on a desktop production
This is expected behavior for the documented workflows. Desktop YouTube Studio and encoder polls do not become mobile Poll stickers. Switch to the YouTube mobile app when an on-screen sticker is required, or keep the poll as a chat card on desktop.
Viewers cannot find the poll later
Live polls do not appear in live chat replay. A viewer watching the archive will not see the poll card in the replay, even though it was visible during the broadcast. If the decision matters after the stream, state the result aloud on camera or include it in the video description; those are separate communication choices and are not replacements for replaying the interactive poll.
Viewers want to change their answer
YouTube does not allow a submitted vote to be changed. End the existing poll and publish a new, clearly worded poll only if a second vote is genuinely needed. Treat the new poll as a separate question so the two result sets are not confused.
A practical runbook for a gaming broadcast
- Before going live: Decide whether the response belongs in chat or should appear over the video. Confirm your channel and event meet the relevant live-chat or mobile requirements.
- Prepare the wording: Write one question with two to four mutually clear options. Check spelling, order, and any consequence attached to the winning choice.
- Start the event: Open the scheduled or active stream, or the Premiere, and confirm that the correct Live Chat is visible.
- Publish at the right moment: On desktop, use the bottom-of-chat Create a poll control. On mobile chat, use Add > Create a poll. For a video overlay, use the mobile Poll sticker instead.
- Read the room: Keep discussing the game while votes arrive, but do not imply that viewers can revise a vote after submission.
- Close deliberately: Use End poll in the chat banner for a chat poll. Drag a sticker to the trash for an on-screen sticker.
- Communicate the outcome: Chat results are shown when the chat poll ends, but the interactive poll will not be present in replay. Say the winning choice aloud if it affects the remainder of the stream.
What poll data is available after the stream
The documented behavior establishes that polls are live interactions and are excluded from live chat replay. Plan your record-keeping accordingly. If a poll determines which game mode, character, or challenge you play next, note the result during the broadcast or capture it in your own production notes. Do not assume that a later viewer can recover the poll card from the replay.
Ending a chat poll displays its results in the live chat at that time. Ending a sticker by dragging it to the trash removes the on-screen presentation. These are different result moments, so tell viewers what the winning option is before moving on when the decision is important.
