Virtualmin can turn one fresh Linux VPS or dedicated server into a multi-tenant hosting platform: each customer receives an isolated Virtual Server with its own files, domains, databases, mail settings, quotas and permissions. The reliable path is to install Virtualmin on a clean machine, choose Apache/LAMP or Nginx/LEMP before installation, complete the first-run wizard, validate the configuration, then create and test each hosted domain.

Plan the server model first. A minimal installation needs at least 1 GiB of RAM and at least 1 GiB of free disk space, plus room for websites and mail. What a shared-style Virtualmin server actually provides
Virtualmin is an administration layer for virtual hosting. Instead of giving every site a separate physical machine, you create multiple Virtual Servers on one Linux host. Each top-level domain can have its own owner, password, document root, PHP settings, databases, mailboxes, DNS records, quotas and permitted features.
This resembles traditional shared hosting, but you remain responsible for the operating system, security updates, capacity planning, DNS design, mail reputation and recovery. The panel does not remove those duties; it makes the recurring configuration manageable.

Core components
- Web service: Apache in a LAMP deployment or Nginx in a LEMP deployment.
- Virtual hosting: separate Virtual Servers for unrelated domains, with sub-servers and aliases for related domain relationships.
- Control panel: normally reached over HTTPS on port
10000. - Optional local services: DNS, FTP, mail delivery, spam and virus filtering, database engines and Jailkit, depending on the installation type.
- Administration controls: quotas, owner-level permissions, feature limits, logs, scheduled jobs and backup/restore functions.
Requirements and decisions to make before installation
Start with a clean, supported server
Provision a fresh supported Linux VPS or dedicated server. Do not pre-install a web stack, mail server, control panel or unrelated packages. Extra packages and modified configuration files can conflict with the automated installer and make later troubleshooting ambiguous.
Give the machine a unique fully qualified hostname such as host.example.com. Do not use that hostname as one of the customer domains. It identifies the control plane and must remain stable even when hosted sites are added or removed.

Select the installation type before running the installer. The bundle cannot be switched later without significant manual work. A mini server is not a defective full server; it is a deliberate design for sites that do not need local mail, DNS or filtering.
Choose Apache/LAMP or Nginx/LEMP

Neither choice is universally faster or safer. Match the server to the applications you will host and to the administrator who will maintain it.
Prepare DNS and the operating system
- Provision the fresh supported Linux server and record its public IPv4 and, if used, IPv6 addresses.
- Set the server hostname to a unique fully qualified name, for example
host.example.com. Confirm the operating system reports that name consistently for its hostname and resolver configuration. - Create the DNS record for the hostname at the DNS provider you intend to use. An address record for
host.example.commust point to the server before the panel can obtain a certificate for it. - Decide whether hosted domains will use local DNS or a cloud/registrar DNS service. If DNS will be local, plan nameserver records and delegation at the domain registrar. If it will be external, plan the web, mail and verification records there instead.
- Ensure the provider allows the ports required by your chosen services. The panel uses TCP port
10000; web, DNS, mail and database access may require additional ports according to the services you enable. - Take a provider snapshot only if it is part of your recovery plan; do not treat a snapshot as a substitute for an independently stored Virtualmin backup.
Do not add customer domains yet. First make the hostname, DNS plan and base operating system correct, because changing them after mail and certificates are active creates avoidable outages.
Install Virtualmin with the automated method
Virtualmin recommends the automated method whenever possible because it reduces mistakes and configures the virtual-hosting stack in one pass. Use the current virtualmin-install.sh command shown in Virtualmin’s automated installation documentation, run over SSH with the privileges requested there. Do not substitute a script copied from an unofficial source.

Select the installation profile
During the installer prompts, select:
- LAMP for Apache, or LEMP for Nginx.
- Full when the server will provide local mail, spam filtering, antivirus, DNS, FTP and related services.
- Mini by passing the documented
--type minioption when you need a web-focused, lower-memory system that relies on external DNS or mail.
Review the proposed packages before confirming. The installer configures repositories, services and virtual-hosting defaults. It may request or attempt a hostname certificate when the hostname already resolves and the necessary ports are reachable.
First login
After installation, open https://your-hostname:10000. If DNS or certificate issuance is not ready, connect temporarily with the server’s IP address, then correct the hostname and issue a proper certificate before exposing the panel to normal administration.
Do not leave administrators using an IP-address exception permanently. A stable hostname certificate prevents browser warnings and makes secure automation and password-manager use predictable.

- Sign in as the administrator and complete the post-installation wizard.
- Review the choices for memory usage, database engines, DNS, mail and filtering. Disable services you will not operate, especially on a small VPS.
- Confirm the panel’s hostname, timezone, resolver settings and outgoing mail identity.
- Open the List Virtual Servers page and run Check Configuration.
- Resolve hostname, DNS, package, service and repository warnings before creating production accounts.
- Repeat the check after changing the web server, DNS mode, mail stack or database packages.
Validation at this stage is cheaper than discovering a broken resolver or conflicting service after customers have uploaded sites.
Create accounts that behave like shared hosting
Use one Virtual Server for each unrelated top-level domain
Choose Create Virtual Server and enter the first domain. Assign an owner username and strong password, then set the quota, allowed features, PHP/runtime choices, databases, mailboxes and backup permissions that match the hosting plan.

Create a separate Virtual Server for every unrelated customer domain. This gives each owner a distinct document root, quota and permission boundary. It also makes suspension, transfer and restoration unambiguous.
Use sub-servers and aliases only when the relationship is intentional
A sub-server is suitable for a subordinate site that belongs to the same owner or domain family. An alias is appropriate when another name should resolve to an existing site without creating an independent account. Do not use aliases to hide unrelated customers inside one owner’s account; that weakens quota accounting and recovery boundaries.

Set boundaries before handing over credentials
- Apply disk and, where supported, bandwidth or process limits appropriate to the plan.
- Allow only the database engines and versions the applications require.
- Limit whether the owner can create mailboxes, scheduled jobs, DNS records, databases, sub-servers and backups.
- Use separate administrative and customer credentials; never share the global administrator password.
- Document the document root, SFTP/FTP method, panel URL, mail limits and support contact for each owner.
Design DNS deliberately
DNS can be hosted on the Virtualmin server with local BIND or delegated to a cloud/registrar provider. Local DNS gives direct control over zones and nameserver delegation, but it makes the VPS part of the authoritative DNS infrastructure. External DNS improves separation and can provide redundancy, while adding another service and account to maintain.

For every domain, verify the address records, the authoritative nameservers, the panel hostname and the mail records from outside the server. If you use the mini installation, local DNS is absent by default, so an external DNS service is normally required.
Issue TLS certificates and keep them renewing
Point the domain’s DNS records to the server before requesting a certificate. The hostname certificate created during installation covers panel access; each hosted domain needs its own certificate when it serves HTTPS.
- Confirm that the domain resolves publicly to the intended server and that the web service answers on the required HTTP/HTTPS ports.
- Open the Virtual Server’s SSL/TLS certificate page and request a certificate using the available automated certificate option.
- Install the certificate for the domain and, where offered, enable HTTPS redirection after testing the site.
- Check renewal status and keep the renewal path reachable. DNS changes, disabled web services or blocked validation ports can prevent renewal.
- Test the certificate from an external network and inspect mixed-content, redirect and alternate-hostname behavior.
Use the panel hostname rather than an IP address for administration, and renew certificates before their validity window becomes an incident.

Handle mail as a separate production system
Local mail is part of the full installation, not the mini profile. Decide whether Virtualmin will deliver and receive mail or whether a separate provider will do so. A web server can be healthy while mail is misconfigured, so test both systems independently.
Records and reputation
- Publish the correct MX records for the receiving service.
- Publish SPF that authorizes the actual outbound senders.
- Generate and publish DKIM keys for signed messages.
- Add a DMARC policy and monitor reports before enforcing a strict policy.
- Set reverse DNS for the sending address where the provider permits it, and make the hostname and mail identity agree.
Operational controls
Set mailbox storage limits, attachment and message-size policies, retention expectations and spam-handling rules. Monitor the mail queue and delivery failures. If a mini installation uses an external mail provider, remove local-mail assumptions from the Virtual Server plan and document where owners manage their mailboxes.
Configure databases and application runtimes
Enable only the database engines and versions required by the applications you will host. Each Virtual Server should have a dedicated database and database user with only the privileges that application needs. Avoid giving customer applications global database administration rights.
Select PHP or another runtime per Virtual Server when the application requires a specific version, but keep versions supported by the operating system and Virtualmin packages. Record the runtime, extensions, upload limits, execution limits and scheduled tasks needed by each site. After changing a runtime, test web requests, cron jobs, file uploads and database connections rather than checking only the home page.

Protect tenant separation
- Use quotas and per-owner feature permissions instead of trusting customers to self-limit.
- Keep each site’s files owned by its intended account and avoid writable shared directories.
- Restrict panel administration to trusted networks or an additional access-control layer where practical.
- Use SSH keys for administrators, disable unnecessary remote login methods and enforce strong, unique credentials.
- Expose only services you operate. A mini installation can reduce the attack surface by omitting local DNS, mail, filtering, FTP and Jailkit.
Patch and monitor
Keep the stable installer branch for production and apply operating-system and Virtualmin updates through supported package mechanisms. Monitor disk usage, memory pressure, service status, web and mail logs, certificate renewal and mail queues. A full server can run out of memory through filtering and database load long before the websites appear broken.
Use the documentation’s troubleshooting areas for DNS, email, databases and repositories when validation fails. Capture the exact warning, affected Virtual Server and recent configuration change before attempting a fix.

Build a backup plan that survives host loss
Virtualmin backups can include home directories, databases, DNS records and web-server directives. Schedule them per Virtual Server or by a policy that covers every tenant, and send copies to storage separate from the production host. A second disk in the same failed VPS is not an off-server backup.

What to include
- Website files and ownership metadata.
- Databases and the credentials or connection details needed to restore applications.
- DNS zones when Virtualmin is authoritative.
- Apache directives or equivalent web-server configuration required by the sites.
- Mailboxes and mail configuration when local mail is part of the service.
Retention and recovery testing
- Keep multiple generations so an unnoticed corruption or deletion is not copied into every backup.
- Encrypt transfers and restrict backup storage credentials.
- Document the destination, paths, encryption keys, owner permissions and restore procedure.
- Perform a test restore to a non-production target and verify files, databases, DNS, certificates and application logins.
- Record how to rebuild a replacement Virtualmin host before the original server is unavailable.
Virtualmin can restore backups and recreate Virtual Servers on another system. Owner-level restores are intentionally restricted to reduce configuration and security risk, so administrators should know which restores customers can perform themselves and which require intervention.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The panel opens by IP but not by hostname
Check the hostname’s address record, resolver results and firewall reachability on port 10000. Correct DNS first, then issue or renew the hostname certificate and use the hostname URL.
A domain shows the wrong site
Verify the domain’s address record, Virtual Server name, document root and web-server configuration. Clear stale DNS caches only after confirming the authoritative zone is correct.
HTTPS certificate issuance fails
Make sure the domain resolves to this server, the validation port is reachable and no proxy or redirect blocks the challenge. Retry after DNS propagation and inspect the certificate and web-service logs.

Mail sends but does not arrive
Check MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, reverse DNS, the local queue and the receiving service’s rejection message. Confirm that the chosen installation actually includes local mail; a mini server does not provide it by default.
Sites become slow or unavailable
Check memory, disk space, database load, process limits, web logs and mail queues. Filtering and antivirus can consume significant memory on a full installation. Apply quotas and disable services that are not part of the hosting offer.
