You can play Xbox games on a TV without owning an Xbox console if your TV or streaming device supports the Xbox app, Xbox Cloud Gaming is available in your region, and your account has an eligible Game Pass plan. Check the exact device model and operating-system version before you begin; support is limited to selected TVs and streaming devices, not every model from a supported manufacturer.
What you need before you start
Cloud gaming runs the game on Xbox servers and streams the picture and sound to your TV. Your controller inputs travel back over the internet. The TV or streaming device therefore needs to run the Xbox app, but it does not need to contain an Xbox console. Xbox said in its February 25, 2026 update that cloud gaming was out of beta; device, regional, subscription, and game availability still vary.

You do not need to buy a console if your existing TV or streaming device is compatible. If a controller or streaming device is the missing piece, check compatibility first; the cited Xbox information does not establish current prices or a complete list of streaming-device models.
Check whether your exact TV or streaming device is supported
Do not use the manufacturer name alone as a compatibility check. Look up the model number and software version in Xbox’s current device compatibility information, and confirm that cloud gaming is available where you live. For VIDAA, Xbox’s July 30, 2026 announcement specifically says that some eligible TVs may not have received the rollout update yet. If your TV is not listed or does not show the app, do not assume that a newer firmware or a similar model will qualify; confirm the model with the relevant TV support service and Xbox’s current compatibility information before buying anything.
Set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on a VIDAA or supported Hisense TV
These instructions follow Xbox’s July 30, 2026 guidance for compatible VIDAA televisions. Menu labels can vary slightly by TV software and region.
- Update the TV. In the TV’s settings, check for a system or software update and install it if available. The TV must be on VIDAA OS 9.6 or later for the cited Xbox instructions.
- Open the Xbox app. Look on the Home Page or in the Games section. If the app is not there after updating, recheck the exact model’s eligibility and rollout status rather than assuming the TV is supported.
- Sign in. Open the app and sign in with an Xbox account, or create an account when prompted. Confirm that the account has a currently eligible Game Pass plan for your region and device.
- Pair a Bluetooth controller. Put a compatible controller into pairing mode, then use the TV’s Bluetooth or accessory settings to connect it. Xbox lists Xbox controllers and, in its VIDAA announcement, names supported Bluetooth controller examples. Check your model’s controller compatibility if pairing fails.
- Choose a cloud-enabled game. Browse the app’s available games and select one marked for cloud play. Game availability depends on the catalog, region, device, and plan.
If the VIDAA update or Xbox app is missing, the likely issue is not solved by purchasing a controller: first confirm the television model and rollout status. Xbox’s announcement directs owners to VIDAA support for model-specific details.

Set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on an LG Smart TV
Xbox’s April 23, 2025 LG instructions provide two routes into the app. On a 2025 LG TV, look for the Xbox app in the Gaming Portal, which can be opened from the Gaming Q-Card on the home page. On eligible TVs running webOS 24 or newer, the app can be downloaded from the app store; the listed eligible groups include 2022 OLED models and selected 2023 models with a firmware update.

- Confirm the TV software and model. Check that your specific TV is among the supported models and has the required webOS version or firmware. “LG TV” by itself is not enough to establish compatibility.

- Install and launch the Xbox app if needed. On a supported 2025 model, find it in the portal. On an eligible older model, download it from the app store if it is not already installed.

- Select a game that supports cloud play. Availability is shown in the app and can change with the catalog, your region, device, and subscription.
Set up on a Samsung TV or Fire TV device
Xbox confirms support for selected Samsung TVs and selected Amazon Fire TV devices, but the cited current pages do not establish a complete model list for either category. Verify the precise model against Xbox’s compatibility information before purchase or setup. Do not infer that every recent television or every Fire TV device can run the app.
For a supported Fire TV device, Xbox says to install and launch the Xbox app. Then follow its sign-in and on-screen setup prompts, connect a controller supported by that device, and choose a game available for cloud play. Xbox’s published material cited here does not give a detailed model-by-model installation route for Samsung TVs, so use the current app and compatibility instructions for your specific set rather than relying on a generic menu path.
If the Xbox app is not available in the TV’s app area, check the model, region, and device software against current Xbox support information. Installing the app on an unsupported model or changing an unrelated setting cannot make an ineligible device compatible.

Xbox recommends a connection of at least 20 Mbps and wired Ethernet where possible. If Ethernet is impractical, 5 GHz Wi-Fi is an option on devices that support it. That recommendation is a baseline, not a promise of a particular resolution, frame rate, or response time: latency, signal stability, congestion, and the route between your home and the service also affect the experience.

- Prefer Ethernet when available. A wired link avoids some of the interference and signal variation that can affect Wi-Fi.
- If you use Wi-Fi, use a capable 5 GHz connection. The TV or streaming device and network equipment must support it, and the signal still needs to be stable where the device sits.
- Check more than the headline speed. A speed test can show whether the connection is near Xbox’s recommendation, but it does not by itself measure how responsive a game stream will feel.
- Reduce competing network use if play is unstable. Streaming, downloads, or other heavy traffic on the same connection can reduce available capacity or consistency.
Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide also reported that cloud gaming hours had risen 45% year over year. That is a service-usage statistic, not a measure of what an individual household should expect for speed or performance.
Understand which games and plans will appear
Having the app does not mean every Xbox game can be streamed. Choose a title that the app identifies as cloud-enabled and available to your account. Xbox said on December 19, 2025 that more than two thirds of the games in its Game Pass library were cloud-enabled at that time. That is a dated catalog figure, not a fixed share: Xbox says the catalog and availability vary by time, region, device, and plan.
The same December 2025 Xbox guide lists Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as including unlimited cloud gaming. The LG launch announcement from April 2025 named Ultimate for that platform’s launch. Since plan terms can change and platform rules may differ, check the current Xbox terms for your location and device before subscribing. The cited information does not establish a current subscription price.
After signing in, use the app’s catalog and cloud-play indicators to determine whether a particular game is available to you. If a game is missing, check its current cloud status, your plan, and regional availability before troubleshooting the TV.

Fix common setup problems
The Xbox app is missing
- Check the TV or streaming device’s exact model against Xbox’s current compatibility information.
- For VIDAA, confirm OS 9.6 or later and check whether the rollout update is available for your model.
- For LG, verify the model, webOS version, and any required firmware update; use the Gaming Portal or app store route appropriate to that set.

The controller will not pair or does not control the game
Confirm that the controller is supported on the particular TV or streaming device, not just that it works with another device. The game will not start or is not available

- Is the exact model on Xbox’s current supported-device information?
- Does it meet the stated operating-system or firmware requirement, and has the app rollout reached it?
- Is the Xbox app preinstalled, available through a gaming portal, or something you must download?
- Does cloud gaming work in your country, and what Game Pass plan is currently required on that device?
- Can the TV or device pair a controller you already own?
- Will you need to buy a controller, streaming device, or other hardware in addition to any subscription?
For LG and VIDAA, Xbox publishes distinct setup paths and model/software qualifications. The cited sources do not show that either path performs better in every home. Your internet connection, supported model, plan, and controller are more useful factors to verify than a broad brand-level comparison.
What to expect from console-free play
A compatible TV or streaming device can remove the need to own an Xbox console for cloud-enabled games, but it does not turn the television into a local console. The game is streamed, so internet quality matters, the available catalog is limited to titles enabled for cloud play, and compatible hardware and an eligible subscription remain necessary.
