Yes—Xbox Cloud Gaming worked directly on select Samsung Smart TVs in 2025, and you did not need an Xbox console. You needed a compatible Samsung TV, the Xbox app, a Microsoft account, an eligible Game Pass subscription for most games, a compatible controller, and a reliable internet connection.
This guide covers the 2025 setup experience. Xbox and Samsung can change supported models, app availability, subscription entitlements, game catalogues, and menus over time.

What you need before starting
- A select supported Samsung Smart TV, generally from 2020 or newer according to Xbox’s TV compatibility page.
- Current TV software and an internet connection.
- A Microsoft account.
- The official Xbox app, available through the TV’s app marketplace or Samsung Gaming Hub.
- A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller.
- An eligible Xbox Game Pass subscription for most cloud games. Check the current Game Pass page for the plan available in your region.
The Samsung remote is useful for navigating menus and signing in, but it is not a general replacement for a game controller.
Can every Samsung TV use Xbox Cloud Gaming?
No. Microsoft and Samsung describe support as applying to select devices, not every Samsung television.

Xbox’s TV information references select Samsung Smart TVs from 2020 and newer. Samsung’s Gaming Hub documentation commonly describes select 2022-and-newer TVs and monitors, with software requirements that can vary by model and market. The exact model number, Tizen version, country or region, Samsung account settings, and app-store availability all matter.
The most practical compatibility test is whether the official Xbox app appears after the TV is updated. You can also check Samsung’s Gaming Hub support information and its regional Gaming Hub page.
Do not factory-reset the television or sideload the mobile Xbox app if the app is missing. Samsung TVs use their own software platform, and an unsupported model cannot normally be made compatible by installing an unofficial application.

1. Update your Samsung TV
- Press the Home button on the Samsung remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select Support.
- Choose Software Update.
- Select Update Now, if an update is available.
Menu labels differ by model year, region, and Tizen version. Updating can resolve missing apps, sign-in errors, and controller problems. Samsung’s support documentation references software version 1302.5 or later for some documented Gaming Hub products, but that number should not be treated as a universal requirement for every Samsung TV.
2. Install or open the Xbox app
- Press Home.
- Open Apps, Gaming Hub, or the TV’s app-search function.
- Search for Xbox.
- Select the official Xbox app.
- Choose Install or Add to Home, depending on the interface.
If the app is already installed, open it from Gaming Hub or the Home screen and check whether an update is available. Restart the TV if the app displays a blank screen or refuses to load.

If you cannot find the app, confirm that the TV is online, install pending software updates, and check the TV’s Samsung account and region settings. Then verify the exact model against Samsung’s compatibility information. Changing regions with a VPN is not a reliable way to add support that is unavailable for the model or market.
3. Sign in to the Xbox app
The app may show a QR code, a short activation code, an on-screen sign-in form, or another phone-and-computer activation method. Follow the method currently displayed rather than expecting one specific sign-in screen.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the Microsoft account connected to your Game Pass subscription and Xbox profile. Using a different account is one of the most common reasons a game catalogue or cloud-play option appears unavailable.
If sign-in fails:
- Confirm that the subscription belongs to the account being used on the TV.
- Complete the activation flow on a phone or computer if the TV requests it.
- Restart the Xbox app and TV.
- Check the TV’s date, time, region, and internet connection.
- Test the account on the Xbox website.
- Check for an Xbox service outage before repeatedly changing your password.
4. Pair a controller
Microsoft lists Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, and other compatible controllers for Xbox gaming on TVs. Samsung documentation gives examples including Xbox Series controllers, Xbox One S controllers, DualSense, DualShock 4, and selected PowerA devices. Compatibility and button mapping depend on the specific TV and controller.
Bluetooth pairing
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- On the TV, open Settings.
- Look for Connection, External Device Manager, or Bluetooth Device List.
- Select the controller when it appears.
- Confirm pairing.
- Return to the Xbox app and test navigation.
The exact menu path varies by Samsung model. An Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth is the safest default for an Xbox-branded TV app, while a PlayStation controller may work but uses different button labels. Third-party Bluetooth controllers require closer model-by-model checking. A controller pairing successfully does not guarantee that every game will map its inputs correctly.

If the controller does not appear:
- Charge it or replace its batteries.
- Put it into pairing mode again.
- Remove old controller entries from the TV’s Bluetooth list.
- Disconnect it from a nearby console, phone, or PC.
- Restart both the controller and TV.
- Update the controller firmware using a compatible Xbox console, PC, or accessory app where applicable.
- Try another known-compatible controller.
A wired USB controller may work if both the TV and controller support wired input, but USB compatibility is also model-dependent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Start a cloud game
- Open the Xbox app.
- Browse or search the cloud-enabled catalogue.
- Select a game marked as playable through the cloud.
- Choose Play or the equivalent launch option.
- Wait for the cloud session to connect.
The first launch may take longer than later sessions. A game appearing in the wider Xbox or Game Pass catalogue does not automatically mean it can be streamed. Cloud support, subscription access, regional availability, and game features vary and can change.
Which Game Pass plan is required?
Microsoft’s TV guidance says an active Xbox Game Pass subscription and supporting games are required for most cloud games. The exact plan name and entitlement can change by region and over time, so use the plan shown as eligible for cloud gaming in your country rather than relying on older advice that always names one specific tier.
There are three separate questions to check:
- Subscription access: Does your plan include cloud gaming?
- Game access: Is the selected game included with that plan, or is it otherwise eligible for streaming?
- Regional access: Is Xbox Cloud Gaming available where you live?
Do not assume that every Game Pass title can be streamed or that a previously advertised promotion is still active. Promotions are usually limited by date, market, and qualifying device.
Improve picture quality and reduce lag
Microsoft recommends Ethernet or 5-GHz Wi-Fi for better TV cloud-gaming performance and identifies 20 Mbps or higher as a target connection speed. That is a target, not a guarantee: latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, router distance, server location, and household network traffic also affect gameplay.

- PLAY ACROSS EVERY SCREEN — Quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including console and PC. Stream games across mobile, gaming handhelds, Smart TVs, and supported VR headsets with XBOX Cloud Gaming.
- Use Ethernet if the TV is close enough to the router.
- Otherwise connect to the router’s 5-GHz network.
- Prefer a strong nearby 5-GHz signal over a weak one; 5 GHz is faster but has shorter range than 2.4 GHz.
- Avoid placing the TV behind a weak mesh node or distant extender.
- Pause large downloads, 4K streams, and cloud backups while playing.
- Restart the router and TV before changing advanced network settings.
- Use the TV’s network diagnostic tool to check the connection.
- Enable Game Mode, where available, and reduce unnecessary picture processing.
Cloud gaming always introduces some network-dependent latency. It is usually more noticeable in competitive shooters, fighting games, racing games, and rhythm games than in slower or turn-based titles. A wired connection can reduce network variation, but it cannot remove all cloud-streaming delay.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely causes | First fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox app is missing | Unsupported model or region, outdated software, Smart Hub issue | Update the TV, restart it, sign back into the Samsung account, verify the exact model and region |
| App will not sign in | Wrong Microsoft account, incomplete activation, incorrect TV time or region | Use the account with the subscription, complete activation on another device, restart the app |
| Controller is not detected | Not in pairing mode, connected elsewhere, stale Bluetooth entry | Unpair it, reboot both devices, remove old entries, pair again |
| Controller pairs but fails in a game | Input mapping or app compatibility problem | Exit the game, confirm the controller in TV settings, reopen Xbox, try a known-compatible Xbox controller |
| Game will not launch | Plan, game, region, or service entitlement is unavailable | Check cloud eligibility, subscription access, regional availability, and whether another game launches |
| Picture is blurry or resolution drops | Weak Wi-Fi, packet loss, congestion, or service adaptation | Use Ethernet or stronger 5-GHz Wi-Fi, stop other traffic, restart network equipment |
| Input lag is excessive | Network latency, Bluetooth interference, TV picture processing | Use Ethernet, enable Game Mode, re-pair the controller, test another game |
Do you need an Xbox console?
No. The Samsung TV app streams supported games from Microsoft’s cloud, so you do not need an Xbox console or gaming PC for this setup.
The trade-off is that cloud gaming is not the same as installing games locally. You need a supported game, qualifying subscription or other streaming entitlement, a compatible controller, and a stable connection. There is no offline play, and cloud availability and latency can be more limiting than on a console.
What to use if your Samsung TV is unsupported
Browser on another device
If the Samsung TV does not offer the Xbox app, you may be able to use Xbox Cloud Gaming through a supported browser on a laptop, tablet, or phone, then connect that device to the TV. This adds an HDMI cable or casting step but avoids replacing the television.
External streaming hardware
An external streaming device can be useful when the built-in TV app is unavailable or no longer receives updates. Microsoft supports Xbox Cloud Gaming on select Amazon Fire TV devices, not every Fire TV Stick. See the official Xbox TV page before buying; an external device still requires a compatible controller, eligible cloud access, and adequate internet.

An Xbox console
A console costs more and requires local storage, but it provides local game installation, offline options for supported games, broader accessory support, and generally lower input latency than cloud streaming.
Samsung TV app versus buying for cloud gaming
The built-in app is a good fit if you already own a compatible Samsung TV, have reliable internet, and mainly want convenient living-room access without purchasing a console. It is a weaker reason to buy a particular TV until you have confirmed that exact model’s Xbox app support in your country.
Before subscribing or buying hardware, verify the model, region, current Game Pass entitlement, supported controller, and games you actually intend to play. Prices, plan names, promotions, and catalogues are changeable and are not included here as permanent figures.

If the official Xbox app appears on your updated Samsung TV, setup is straightforward: install the app, sign in with the Microsoft account holding your cloud entitlement, pair a compatible controller, and launch a cloud-enabled game. You do not need an Xbox console.
If the app is absent, the TV is likely unsupported for that model or market. A subscription, factory reset, VPN, or unofficial sideload will not reliably solve a compatibility limitation; check Samsung’s model support or use a supported browser or external streaming device instead.
