The new Steam Controller launched in May but remains supply-constrained, Steam Machine reservations opened on June 22, and Steam Frame still has no confirmed retail price or normal consumer release date in the official information available as of August 18, 2026.
These are three separate products—not one simultaneous launch—and each makes a different case for your money.
The short version
| Product | Status on August 18, 2026 | What it means for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Controller | Launched in May; supply is constrained | Reservations may show delivery windows as late as 2027 |
| Steam Machine | Reservations open since June 22 | Starting at $1,049 in the US; fulfillment is handled through a queue |
| Steam Frame | Pricing and ordinary retail availability unresolved | Wait for confirmed details and independent testing |
Valve announced the trio on November 12, 2025, initially describing all three as 2026 products. The company later cited shortages affecting memory and storage as a reason to revisit both timing and pricing. Its February 2026 launch update kept a first-half target but did not provide firm dates or prices.
What Valve announced
The lineup is a coordinated expansion of Steam hardware and SteamOS:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- TMR Joysticks - Offering higher sensitivity, greater precision, and enhanced durability.
- 8BitDo Exclusive Wireless Technology - “8Speed”, it delivers an exceptionally stable 2.4G connection with ultra-low latency under 1ms. Engineered for rock-solid reliability, it features strong anti-interference and a 10m range with virtually no lag.
- Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection). Customizable 6-Axis Motion Control. Turbo function. Rumble vibration. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.
- Steam Controller: a new wireless controller built around Steam Input and trackpad-based controls.
- Steam Machine: a compact SteamOS gaming PC designed for a television or monitor.
- Steam Frame: a standalone VR headset intended to operate within the Steam ecosystem.
Valve’s broader aim is to extend SteamOS beyond the Steam Deck. The Steam Machine is therefore better understood as a living-room PC than as a conventional locked-down console. The three products also have different launch statuses, prices and purchasing decisions.
Why “arriving early 2026” is no longer accurate
The important timeline is staggered:
- November 12, 2025: Valve announced the Steam Controller, Steam Machine and Steam Frame for 2026.
- February 4, 2026: Valve said memory and storage shortages had raised component costs and made the original schedule and pricing unreliable.
- May 2026: the Steam Controller launched separately.
- June 22, 2026: Steam Machine reservations opened.
- August 18, 2026: Steam Frame still lacked confirmed consumer pricing and a standard purchase date in the official material reviewed.
That means there was no simultaneous early-2026 arrival. The Controller is shipping through a constrained reservation process, the Machine is in a reservation queue, and the Frame remains the unresolved part of the lineup.
Steam Controller: launched, but not necessarily available now
The new Steam Controller is a second-generation Valve controller, not a re-release of the 2015 model. Trackpads remain central to its identity. Alongside conventional controller inputs, they can make mouse-heavy PC games, strategy titles, simulations and desktop navigation more practical from a sofa.
Its main software advantage is Steam Input, which allows extensive remapping for games that support the Steam Overlay and Steam Input. That makes it more flexible than a standard dual-stick gamepad, although the trackpad-centered layout may require an adjustment period.

The available launch information supports a $99 US price signal, but price and availability can vary by country and checkout date. The more significant issue is supply: Valve introduced reservations after demand exceeded expectations.
Valve’s displayed estimated order windows included:
- by September 2026;
- by December 2026; or
- in 2027.
New reservations after the update were showing a 2027 shipping estimate. A purchase invitation gives the customer 72 hours to complete the order. These are estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates, and joining the queue is not the same as receiving the controller immediately.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The Controller makes the most sense for Steam users who want deep remapping, trackpad input or a natural companion for a Steam Machine. It is less compelling if you only play games designed for a conventional console controller or need a gamepad immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSteam Machine: a $1,049 SteamOS living-room PC
The Steam Machine is a stationary PC for a TV or monitor. Unlike a Steam Deck, it has no built-in display or controls. It is intended to provide substantially more living-room performance while retaining the SteamOS experience.
US configurations and prices
| Configuration | US price | With Steam Controller |
|---|---|---|
| 512GB | $1,049 | $1,128 |
| 2TB | $1,349 | $1,428 |
The 2TB version includes two additional faceplates: red fabric and solid walnut. These are US prices; regional pricing, taxes and availability vary. Valve said changed memory and storage costs affected the final pricing and that supply limitations restricted the number of launch units.
How reservations work
Reservations opened on June 22, 2026. Valve said initial reservation emails would begin June 25, with purchase invitations starting June 29. A reservation places the buyer in the fulfillment queue; it does not guarantee immediate delivery or turn the product into an in-stock retail purchase.
What performance does Valve promise?
Valve’s stated target is broad Steam-library compatibility at 4K/60fps with upscaling such as AMD FSR. That wording needs context:
- It is not a promise of native 4K/60fps in every game.
- It is a target, not a universal guarantee.
- Performance depends on the game, graphics settings, Proton compatibility and the amount of upscaling required.
- “Most games” does not mean every demanding title.
Valve’s performance claim is therefore best read as a living-room target for a broad portion of the Steam library, not as a console-style fixed output guarantee.
Steam Machine vs. Steam Deck
| Steam Deck | Steam Machine | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Portable PC with built-in screen and controls | Stationary PC for a TV or monitor |
| Use case | Portable play, handheld gaming and docking | Local living-room gaming |
| Controls | Built in | Separate controller required |
| Performance | Lower-power handheld performance | Designed for substantially higher living-room performance |
A Steam Machine paired with a Steam Controller is Valve’s more direct alternative to docking a Deck. A Deck remains the clearer choice if portability, an existing dock or a lower initial commitment matters more than television performance. The two share SteamOS, but game support and performance will differ between their hardware.

- Rechargeable wireless pro controller designed for Steam for Windows 11/10 & Steam Deck
- Dedicated buttons for quick access to Steam menus
- Capacitive Touch Thumbsticks, gyro sensor, programmable buttons, & more
- Also functions as an XInput controller for Windows 11/10 (wired mode only)
- Compatible with Steam and Steam Deck
Valve also presents SteamOS as usable on other living-room PCs, although support is not universal. The referenced SteamOS support information includes limitations such as the current AMD GPU support pathway. A third-party PC can offer more component choice and Windows compatibility, but usually requires more setup.
Steam Frame: the product you should not treat as released
Steam Frame is the standalone VR headset in Valve’s new hardware family. Its significance is larger than the headset itself: it suggests Valve is trying to build a broader Steam and SteamOS ecosystem spanning handheld, living-room and VR hardware.

However, the official Steam Hardware material reviewed here does not establish a confirmed retail price, ordinary consumer purchase date or current availability. It should not be described as an already-available product.
Important buying questions—including comfort, display quality, lenses, tracking, battery life, wireless performance and game compatibility—also require confirmed specifications and independent testing. Reports, retailer listings, certification sightings and community discussion should not be treated as Valve launch confirmation.
If you want PC VR now, compare established PC-VR and standalone-VR platforms rather than assuming the Frame is ready to buy. If you specifically want Valve’s headset, waiting is the sensible choice until Valve publishes firm purchase information.

You already own a Steam Deck
Keep the Deck if portability is your priority. Consider the Steam Machine only if docking has exposed a performance gap and you specifically want a stronger local TV gaming system. It is not a simple upgrade in the same form factor.
You want a Steam gaming PC for the TV now
The Steam Machine offers a turnkey SteamOS route, but its $1,049 starting price and reservation queue matter. Compare it with a small-form-factor PC, gaming desktop or gaming laptop. Those alternatives may offer more component choice, Windows compatibility and easier upgrades, while demanding more configuration.

You want a PC controller
The Steam Controller is the most distinctive product in the lineup if you value trackpads, gyro-style input and Steam Input remapping. Reserve it if you can tolerate a potentially long wait. Choose a conventional gamepad if you need immediate delivery or mainly play controller-first games.
You want VR
Do not preorder based on the Steam Frame announcement alone. Its price, retail date and critical hardware details remain unresolved in the official information covered here. Compare currently established headsets if you need VR immediately.
You want the cheapest way into Steam hardware
The Steam Deck remains the clearest Valve alternative for portable play and lower-cost entry. The Steam Machine is aimed at a different use case and starts at a price that competes with PCs and consoles, not only with handhelds.

Bottom line
This is no longer an “early 2026” launch story. It is a staggered, supply-constrained rollout.
The Steam Controller has launched, but new buyers may face a reservation wait extending into 2027. The Steam Machine is reservable from $1,049 in the US, with performance claims that depend on upscaling and individual games. The Steam Frame remains a future product whose final price and consumer availability have not been established by the official information reviewed.
Evaluate them separately: reserve the Controller if its unique controls appeal to you, compare the Machine carefully against other PCs, and wait for confirmed details and testing before making a Frame decision.
