For the best Android gaming experience, aim for a frame rate your phone can sustain—not the highest setting it can briefly reach. Update the phone and game, choose a suitable gaming mode, tune graphics and refresh rate, reduce interruptions, and keep the device cool. Menu names and available features vary by manufacturer, model, Android version, region, and game.
Quick setup checklist
- Install available system and game updates, then restart the phone.
- Keep storage comfortably clear; as a practical warning, Google says Pixel phones may have problems when less than 10% of storage is available.
- Use the phone’s built-in gaming utility rather than an unverified booster app.
- Choose Performance for a short competitive session, or Balanced for longer play.
- Set a game-supported refresh rate and a frame-rate target the phone can sustain.
- Use gaming Do Not Disturb, but preserve emergency and other important call exceptions.
- Stop downloads, streaming, and other avoidable network activity during online play.
- Keep the phone out of direct sun and avoid charging through a long demanding session if that makes it hot.
- Test changes in the same game for at least 15 minutes and adjust one setting at a time.
Prepare the phone before changing settings
Update the system, game, and gaming utility
On Pixel, check Settings → System → Software update. On other Android phones, use the equivalent system-update screen. Update the game through Google Play or the manufacturer’s approved store, update the built-in gaming utility if an update is available, and restart after major updates. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance covers updates, restarting, and storage: Google Pixel performance troubleshooting.
Free storage and limit unnecessary activity
Large games need space for updates, downloaded assets, shader caches, and temporary files. Google’s 10% free-storage warning is specific to Pixel performance troubleshooting, not a universal Android rule; keeping more space available is useful if you install large games or record gameplay. Move photos and videos elsewhere or uninstall games you no longer use. Pause large downloads, backups, and app updates while playing if they compete for storage or network resources.
Close an app if it is actively using significant resources, such as a video stream or a large download. Do not force-stop every background app as a routine: it can make apps reload and is not a guaranteed performance improvement. Avoid third-party RAM cleaners and apps promising guaranteed FPS increases, hidden GPU unlocks, or thermal-management bypasses.

Check the phone’s condition
If the phone is already warm, let it cool before starting a demanding game. A thick case can trap heat; remove it temporarily if the device is getting hot during play. Clean and dry the screen, especially if you are troubleshooting missed touches. After fitting a screen protector, check whether touch response has changed.

Pixel: Game Dashboard
Google documents Game Dashboard on Pixel devices running Android 12 or later. Its overlay can provide FPS monitoring, screenshots, screen recording, Do Not Disturb, and game performance or battery choices. The exact availability and options depend on the device, software, and game. See Google’s Game Dashboard overview.
Samsung Galaxy: Gaming Hub and Game Booster
On supported Galaxy devices, launch a game and open the Game Booster icon or panel. Depending on model, software version, and region, controls may include performance level, Touch Booster, navigation and edge-panel blocking, auto-brightness blocking, Bixby blocking, touch protection, a floating menu, screenshots, recording, and system monitoring. Samsung documents its current features at Samsung Gaming Hub and Game Booster support.
Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance describes changes to gaming settings and notes that options vary. On some newer Galaxy software, call and notification suppression is set up as a gaming mode in Modes and Routines rather than through the older Priority workflow. Check Samsung’s One UI 7 gaming-settings guidance if the controls differ on your phone.

Look for a preinstalled tool called Game Mode, Game Space, Game Turbo, HyperBoost, Armoury Crate, X Mode, or Gaming Mode. Open it before or during the game and check its per-game options. Google’s Android Game Mode framework began with Android 12 on selected devices, but manufacturers determine what users see and what the mode actually changes. Game Mode is not a universal FPS switch; see Android’s Game Mode overview.
For games installed through Google Play, Google Play Games Sidekick may provide gaming overlays on supported titles; it is not available in every game. See Google Play Games Sidekick support. If a game is missing from a gaming utility, check whether it can be added manually and update the utility. Avoid sideloading an unknown APK to restore an overlay.

Choose Performance, Balanced, or Battery mode
| Mode | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Short competitive sessions where responsiveness matters most | Can use more power and generate more heat, which may lead to throttling during a long session |
| Balanced or Standard | Most players and mixed gaming sessions | Less emphasis on peak performance, with a better balance of endurance and heat |
| Battery Saver | Travel, long sessions, or less demanding games | May reduce performance or the available frame-rate ceiling |
| Custom or per-game profile | Players with different needs for different titles | Needs testing and occasional adjustment |
Android’s Game Mode API describes performance- and battery-oriented behavior, but the device maker implements the actual intervention, and support can depend on the game. A Performance setting may change system behavior; it cannot guarantee higher FPS in every title. See Android Game Mode API details.
More power does not always mean better sustained performance. A phone running at its limits may perform well briefly and then slow as it heats up. For a long session, Balanced mode with a steady frame rate can feel better than a hot, fluctuating high-FPS profile.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfigure refresh rate and in-game graphics
Choose a realistic display refresh rate
Enable the highest refresh-rate setting that the phone and game can use reliably. Depending on the device, the label may be Smooth display, High, or Dynamic. Adaptive refresh can help balance smoothness and battery use. If battery-saving settings reduce refresh rate, turn them off for a competitive session if needed.
A 120Hz or 165Hz display does not make every game render at 120 or 165 FPS. The game must support that frame-rate mode, and the chipset, resolution, and thermal condition affect what the phone can sustain. Higher refresh rates can also use more power when active. Android 16 includes adaptive-refresh behavior and controller-remapping capabilities on compatible devices, but availability depends on device and game support: Android 16 features. For a concrete illustration of display capability versus game output, ASUS lists different ROG Phone 9 Pro display rates for general settings and Game Genie; those are panel and system capabilities, not a promise that every game runs at those rates: ROG Phone 9 Pro specifications.
Tune the game for stability first
- Choose the highest frame-rate option that remains stable, if the game offers one.
- Start with medium or high graphics quality rather than assuming the maximum preset is best.
- If frames drop, lower expensive effects first: shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, anti-aliasing, motion blur, depth of field, and high-resolution textures when memory or storage is constrained.
- Use a frame-rate cap when available. A steady cap can feel smoother than an uncapped rate that repeatedly rises and falls.
- Test for 10–15 minutes or longer. If performance falls later, reduce effects or the target rate; reduce resolution if the game remains unstable.
For competitive shooters, prioritize frame rate, touch response, visibility, and stable latency. For visually rich RPGs, image quality may matter more. Turn-based and casual games often suit Balanced mode. Emulation performance depends heavily on the emulator, game, controller compatibility, and sustained thermals rather than a generic Android gaming toggle.
Block interruptions without hiding important alerts
Use a gaming-specific Do Not Disturb profile where available rather than leaving the whole phone silent indefinitely. Configure it to limit calls, texts, social notifications, banners, chat heads, and screen-recording prompts. Game Dashboard can enable DND and provide screenshots or recording shortcuts. Samsung Game Booster may also block navigation buttons, edge panels, auto brightness, and Bixby on supported devices.
Preserve exceptions for emergency contacts, repeated callers, alarms, or alerts you need for work, medical, family, or security reasons. If a notification still appears, check the gaming profile’s exceptions and the app’s own pop-up settings. On supported Samsung software, review the gaming mode in Modes and Routines.

Prevent accidental touches
Use touch protection or navigation locking if the phone offers it. Disable edge-panel gestures only if they interfere with controls. Set the game’s HUD and sensitivity so critical buttons do not sit under navigation gestures or palm-rejection zones. Turn on touch sensitivity only when it helps with a screen protector or gloves; unnecessary sensitivity can make accidental input more likely. Accessibility features such as magnification, touch assistance, larger text, or reduced motion should be adjusted only if they interfere with a specific game—do not disable an accommodation you rely on.
Manage heat, charging, and battery life
Reduce heat before it causes throttling
Keep the phone out of direct sunlight, uncover any vents, and avoid setting it on a soft surface that traps heat. Stop screen recording or streaming if the device is struggling. If a case clearly retains heat, remove it. A phone that becomes too hot may reduce performance, change connectivity, restrict charging, dim or shut off the display, or shut down. Google describes these behaviors and Pixel operating-temperature guidance at Pixel device temperature and safety guidance.
There is no universal gaming temperature limit for all Android phones. If the phone feels uncomfortably hot, shows a temperature warning, or behaves abnormally, stop playing. If it is connected to power, disconnect it, move it somewhere cooler, and wait for it to cool before resuming.

Charge with airflow and compatible equipment
Start a demanding session with enough charge to avoid rushing to plug in mid-game. If you need to charge, use a compatible USB-C Power Delivery charger and sound cable; the phone will only draw power at its supported rate. Google notes that charging speed depends on usage, battery age, and ambient temperature, and advises charging Pixel phones in a cool place: Pixel charging guidance.
Avoid wireless charging during demanding play if it adds heat, and do not use a damaged cable or low-quality charger. Fast charging is not automatically better for a long gaming session: the relevant issue is the phone’s heat and charging behavior under your conditions. If your manufacturer provides bypass, charge-separation, or pause-charging functionality, use it only as documented for that model.
To improve endurance, lower brightness, refresh rate, or frame-rate target, and choose Balanced or Battery Saver. A cooler, stable 60 FPS profile can outperform a hot, fluctuating 90 FPS profile over a long session.

Reduce network lag and improve audio
Check latency, not just download speed
For online games, use a stable nearby Wi-Fi connection. A 5GHz or 6GHz band can work well close to the router; 2.4GHz may reach farther through walls. Congestion, interference, router quality, and signal strength matter more than a simple rule that one band is always best. Pause large downloads and streaming on the same network. Mobile data can work well when its signal is stable.
A fast download test does not guarantee low in-game ping. Check the game’s own indicators for ping, jitter, packet loss, and server region over a 15–30 minute session. A VPN can add latency; turn it off for competitive play if it is not required. Router quality-of-service controls may help prioritize game traffic on a busy home network. Changing DNS is not a reliable way to reduce the latency of every in-game packet.
Choose audio for the game
Wired USB-C audio can provide consistent latency if the phone supports it. Wireless earbuds are convenient; use a low-latency mode if available, but advertised latency figures are not standardized and no Bluetooth codec guarantees lag-free play. Use stereo for games that rely on positional sound, keep game and voice-chat volume independently adjustable when possible, and disable audio enhancements if they blur directional cues. Test microphone permissions and monitoring before a competitive match.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up touch controls or a controller
Make touchscreen input predictable
Use the game’s custom HUD and sensitivity settings, keep the screen clean and dry, and move critical controls away from areas that trigger navigation gestures. If a screen protector causes missed input, test touch-sensitivity mode if the phone provides it. Turn off accidental-edge protection only when it is clearly blocking a control.
Use a controller when the game supports it
A USB-C wired controller avoids Bluetooth interference and can offer the lowest practical input delay, though compatibility varies. Bluetooth is more convenient but can add battery use and possible latency. Confirm that the game itself supports controller input: Android recognizing a controller does not mean a particular game maps every button. Check button remapping and dead zones, and update controller firmware through the manufacturer’s official app. Android’s controller-remapping capability is not universal across devices and games.

For cloud gaming, controller input is only one part of the delay; network and streaming latency remain. A controller cannot fix a poor connection. If a controller connects but does not work, check its input mode, whether it is paired to another device, the game’s controller support, and whether manual mapping or a wired test is available.

Test the setup and troubleshoot by symptom
Run the same game for at least 15 minutes after changing settings. Note frame-rate stability, touch consistency, battery drain, heat or warnings, and the game’s ping or packet loss. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what helped.
Low FPS or stutter
- Restart the phone and check for system or game updates.
- Check available storage; Google’s Pixel guidance flags less than 10% free space as a possible performance concern.
- Pause downloads and stop resource-heavy apps that are actively running.
- Try Balanced mode, lower graphics effects, and cap the frame rate at a stable level.
- Test without charging and compare performance on another network if the game is online.
- If the game only slows after several minutes, investigate heat before raising performance settings.
Other possibilities include a frame-rate mode the game does not support, game optimization problems, an old or damaged battery, or a firmware issue. If the same problem persists, check the manufacturer’s support tools for temperature and battery-health information; Google Pixel users can review Pixel device health and temperature diagnostics.
Overheating
Stop charging if connected, move the phone away from heat and sunlight, remove a heat-trapping case, lower frame rate or graphics, and stop recording or streaming. Wait for the device to cool before resuming. A cooler accessory may help only if heat is actually limiting sustained performance; it will not fix weak hardware, network lag, or a game locked to a low frame rate.
Recommended Free Tools
High ping or rubber-banding
Check the game’s server region, ping, jitter, and packet-loss indicators. Pause other traffic, try a less congested Wi-Fi band or stable mobile connection, and test without a nonessential VPN. FPS and network latency are separate problems: changing graphics settings will not repair a weak or unstable connection.
Game missing from the gaming overlay or crashing
Confirm the game came from an approved store, update the game and gaming utility, and check whether the phone’s manufacturer provides an add-game option. Game Mode behavior may depend on Play Store installation and developer support. If the game crashes, restart, update it, check storage, and remove any recently added overlay or booster app before escalating to the game or phone maker.
Notifications still appear
Confirm that DND is enabled in the gaming profile, then review exceptions for contacts, alarms, media, and repeated callers. Check app-specific pop-ups. On Samsung, gaming notification controls may be part of a mode in Modes and Routines on newer software.
High refresh rate is missing or a controller does not work
The phone may not support the higher rate, battery saver may be limiting it, or the game may cap its frame rate. Manufacturers also use different display-setting labels. For a controller, verify game support and controller mode, check button mapping, and try a compatible wired connection if Bluetooth pairing is unreliable.
When a gaming phone or accessory is worth considering
Buy for a demonstrated limitation, not a software toggle
A dedicated gaming phone may offer larger batteries, more cooling hardware, shoulder triggers, higher-refresh display options, and gaming-focused software. A mainstream flagship may be a better daily choice for cameras, water resistance, compactness, software support, or resale value. Consider a gaming phone if your current device cannot sustain the games and sessions you want after sensible settings changes—not simply because you want a Performance toggle your phone already has.
As one example of a gaming-focused device, ASUS lists the ROG Phone 9 Pro’s display modes and gaming features on its official specifications page. Those specifications do not establish how every game performs over a long session; sustained results depend on the title, settings, and conditions.
Quick Recap
Choose accessories only when they solve a real problem
- Controller: Useful for supported platform games, emulation, and cloud gaming; a poor fit for games without controller support or players who prefer touchscreen controls.
- Phone cooler: Consider only if heat causes later-session performance drops. Check fit, case compatibility, power needs, and fan noise; it cannot solve weak hardware or network problems.
- Charger and cable: Match the phone’s supported charging standard rather than buying based only on maximum wattage. A higher-rated charger cannot force the phone to exceed its supported input.
- Wired or low-latency audio: Useful when consistent sound timing or positional audio matters; test compatibility and comfort.
