For a PS5, setup is straightforward: connect the headset’s supplied USB-C cable to the PS5’s front USB-C port, turn on the console and headset, pair both PS VR2 Sense controllers over USB, create a safe play area, adjust the headset and lenses, update software, and launch a game marked as supporting PS VR2. You do not need the original PS VR camera, a breakout box, a PS4, or external tracking sensors.
Before you start
PS5 requirements
- PlayStation 5 console
- PlayStation VR2 headset and its supplied USB-C cable
- Both PS VR2 Sense controllers
- A compatible PS VR2 game or application
- A clear, adequately lit play area
PS VR2 requires a PS5 and does not work with PS4. It is a separate platform from the original PS VR system, so original PS VR-only software and camera accessories are not substitutes. See Sony’s current support information at PlayStation VR2 Support.

What is in the box?
- PS VR2 headset
- Left and right Sense controllers with wrist straps
- USB charging cable
- Stereo headphones and three ear-tip sizes
- Printed documentation
The included USB cable charges the controllers and is used to pair them initially. The headset uses its dedicated USB-C connection to the PS5.
Room and safety checks
Remove furniture, pets, cables, lamps and anything you could hit or trip over. Room-scale games and apps that specifically require room-scale play need at least 6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in, according to the official product page; seated and standing experiences may need less. Use even room lighting, avoid direct sunlight and glare, and do not use PS VR2 if you are under 12. Stop immediately if you experience nausea, disorientation, blurred vision or other discomfort. Read Sony’s safety guidance.

Connect PS VR2 to your PS5
- Place the PS5 so its front USB-C port is accessible.
- Plug the headset’s supplied USB-C cable into that front port. Do not force the connector.
- Route the cable so it cannot cross a walking path, while leaving enough slack for head movement.
- Turn on the PS5.
- Press the headset power button.
- Use the DualSense controller and follow the on-screen setup.
For normal console use, the headset is wired to the PS5; it is not a wireless headset. If there is no image, reseat both ends of the cable, check the headset power indicator, restart the PS5, and remove any hub or intermediary device.
Pair and charge both Sense controllers
- Turn on the PS5 and sign in to the intended user.
- Connect one Sense controller to the PS5 with the included USB cable.
- Press that controller’s PS button and wait for pairing to finish.
- Disconnect the cable for wireless use.
- Repeat the process for the other controller.
Pair the left and right controllers separately. A controller is assigned to the user signed in during pairing and can pair with only one PS5 at a time, so repeat this process when moving it to another console. Charge both controllers if necessary, remove the cable before playing, and secure each wrist strap. Sony’s controller instructions are at PS VR2 Sense Controller support.
If a controller will not pair
- Charge the affected controller.
- Try a USB cable that supports data, not only charging.
- Pair one controller at a time and restart the PS5.
- Turn off the PS5 completely. Press the small reset button on the controller’s rear with a pin.
- Reconnect it by USB and press PS.
Use the reset procedure only after the basic pairing steps. Sony documents it in its PS VR2 troubleshooting guide.
Create a safe play area
- Clear the floor and the space around your arms.
- Choose the mode that matches the game and room: seated, standing or room-scale.
- When prompted, scan the room and set the floor accurately.
- Confirm the boundary before starting play.
On PS5, the current path is Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > Set Play Area. Menu wording can change with system software. The boundary appears as you approach it; crossing it pauses the game and shows your surroundings. Cinematic mode does not use a VR play area.

Choosing a mode
| Mode | Best suited to | Space consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Seated | Cockpit, cinematic and comfort-focused games | Least space; keep the controllers clear of furniture |
| Standing | Many active games | Clear space around your body and arms |
| Room-scale | Games requiring movement through the room | At least 6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in for software that requires room-scale |
Adjust the headset for a clear, comfortable view
- Connect the included headphones, or use another supported audio device.
- Use the headset function button for a see-through view when you need to check the room.
- Pull the scope outward and release the headband.
- Place the headband comfortably around the back of your head and tighten it evenly.
- Adjust the scope depth so the display sits comfortably in front of your eyes.
- Turn the lens-adjustment dial until your eyes are centered.
- Complete the on-screen eye-tracking setup.
Re-adjust after a few minutes if the image is unclear or pressure develops. Blur in both eyes usually means the headset position, scope or lens spacing needs adjustment. Blur in one eye or eye strain calls for careful alignment and rerunning eye tracking. If lenses fog, remove the headset and let them clear; clean only with an appropriate lens-safe method.

Update software before playing
Install available PS5 system software updates and keep the headset device software current. After pairing, Sense-controller updates are delivered through PS5 system software updates. Do not rely on a fixed firmware number: versions change over time.
Install and launch your first game
- Download a title from the PlayStation Store or insert a compatible physical disc where applicable.
- Confirm the product specifically supports PS VR2; an original PS VR game is not automatically compatible.
- Put on the wrist straps and confirm the boundary.
- Start seated if you are new to VR or the game involves movement.
- Keep the DualSense nearby when the game requires it.
Check Sony’s PS VR2 game and console compatibility information. Use the function button to see your surroundings without removing the headset.
Controls worth learning immediately
- PS button: opens the control center and assigns a controller to a user.
- Function button: toggles the surroundings view by default. Change it at Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > VR headset > Function Button Assignment; it can instead be assigned to microphone mute.
- Options button: hold it in cinematic mode to reposition the screen.
- Create button: captures screenshots on PC. Sony’s PC guidance does not support video clips through PS VR2.
Fix common setup problems
The headset will not turn on
Confirm the PS5 is on, press the headset power button, check the indicator, and reseat the USB-C cable at both ends. Restart the PS5 and headset if necessary.
The headset powers on but the screen is black
- Check the PS5 and headset power indicators.
- Disconnect and reconnect the headset cable at both ends.
- Restart both devices.
- Remove hubs, adapters and extension devices.
- Check the PS5 display connection separately.
- If the problem remains, follow Sony’s no-image path in the troubleshooting guide.
A normal HDMI cable cannot replace the headset’s USB-C connection.
Tracking is unstable
Improve the environment before assuming the hardware has failed. Turn on room lights, close curtains to block direct sunlight, remove reflective surfaces, add visible room features where possible, and keep hands and controllers in view of the headset cameras. Dark rooms, glare, blank walls, moving furniture and obscured controllers can all reduce tracking reliability.
The play area keeps resetting
Recreate it with the room arranged as it will be during play. Check floor detection, remove objects near the boundary, reposition reflective items, and create a new area after changing rooms or furniture.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The image is blurry or distorted
Reposition the headset, adjust scope depth and headband tension, center your eyes with the lens dial, and rerun eye tracking. Distinguish optical blur from tracking problems: lens alignment affects sharpness, while lighting and visible-room conditions affect tracking.
You feel sick or disoriented
Stop, remove the headset, and resume only after symptoms have gone. Do not try to push through discomfort.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Optional Windows PC setup
PC use is a separate configuration, not an alternative cable arrangement for the PS5. You need the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter, Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit, a direct DisplayPort 1.4 connection, a direct USB 3.0 connection, Bluetooth 4.0 or later for both Sense controllers, Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 App. A DisplayPort 1.4 cable is sold separately.
| Requirement | Sony-listed detail |
|---|---|
| CPU baseline | Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 |
| Memory | At least 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics baseline | NVIDIA GTX 1650 or later, NVIDIA RTX-series hardware, AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT or later, or AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT or later, subject to Sony’s architecture and driver qualifications |
| Recommended graphics | NVIDIA RTX 3060 or AMD RX 6600 XT or better for best performance |
Connect the adapter directly to the PC’s USB 3.0 port and connect DisplayPort directly to the PC’s DisplayPort output. DisplayPort-over-USB-C is not compatible with the adapter, and hubs or extension cables can cause failures. Install Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 App, then pair each controller through Bluetooth. PC features and game support are not identical to PS5 features and software. See Sony’s PC setup guide and SteamVR instructions.
Accessories: what you actually need
You need no accessory beyond the PS5, headset package, compatible software and a safe room for the basic setup. The included headphones complete audio setup.
