In Wirecast, set YouTube Live’s output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate through the encoder preset selected under Output > Output Settings. For common H.264 targets, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 8 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60. These are ingestion recommendations, not guarantees of a stable stream: your upload connection and computer must sustain the settings, so test a representative broadcast before going live.

What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?

Choose a bitrate based on the codec, resolution, and frame rate you send to YouTube. The following are YouTube Help’s published recommended H.264 ingestion settings, accessed October 3, 2026; they are recommendations, not independent performance tests.

Wirecast output target YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

Use the value for the format you actually send, and make sure your available upload capacity can sustain it with room for normal network variation. YouTube’s table includes different settings for other codecs and resolutions; consult its live encoder settings if you use H.265/HEVC, AV1, 1440p, or 2160p. For example, YouTube recommends H.264 at 34 Mbps for 1440p60 and 50 Mbps for 2160p60.

What bitrate should I use for 1080p 60fps?

For H.264, use YouTube’s recommended 17 Mbps target for 1080p60. If your connection or encoding system cannot maintain a stable output at that setting, test a lower resolution or frame rate rather than assuming the nominal target will work on every setup.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Should I use 720p or 1080p?

Use 1080p when your source detail, encoding capacity, and upload connection support it reliably. Choose 720p if you need to reduce the load or if testing shows that 1080p causes instability. At 60 fps, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 17 Mbps for 1080p and 8 Mbps for 720p; at 30 fps, they are 14 Mbps and 8 Mbps respectively. A higher frame rate can help preserve fast motion, but it also takes more bitrate at the same resolution.

How do I change resolution in Wirecast?

The exact controls vary by Wirecast version and operating system. The navigation below follows Telestream’s Wirecast 16 Windows guide; check the labels in your installed release if they differ.

  1. Prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, set up the live event and have its destination and stream key ready if your chosen Wirecast workflow requests them. Treat the key like a password: do not share or display it.
  2. Open the output settings. In Wirecast, go to Output > Output Settings, select YouTube as the destination, and choose an encoder.
  3. Select or copy an encoder preset. Choose a preset suitable for your intended resolution and frame rate. To customize one, use the Encoder Presets controls to copy it, change the available width, height, frame-rate, and bitrate fields, and save it under a distinct name. Telestream’s guide describes copying, editing, and saving a preset; the specific fields depend on the selected encoder.
  4. Set the output format. Select dimensions and frame rate that match your production target and that YouTube accepts. For H.264, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate table above as your reference. Wirecast’s available codecs depend on the software version and system.
  5. Choose a bitrate mode and transport. YouTube’s live guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Telestream’s preset controls include Strict Constant Bitrate, which holds the configured average bitrate strictly; use the CBR option exposed by your encoder. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  6. Save and select the preset. Save the edited preset with a recognizable name, then confirm it is selected for the YouTube output.

YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in its live encoder guidance, but a codec is usable only if your Wirecast build and selected encoder expose it. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. For SDR, it recommends Rec. 709. For HDR, its cited guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in that guidance.

Set resolution automatically or manually in YouTube Studio

YouTube normally detects stream resolution and frame rate automatically. Keep automatic detection unless you need manual control. To choose manually, create a custom stream key in YouTube Studio and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution, following YouTube’s stream settings instructions. The output sent by Wirecast still needs to match the format you intend to stream.

How to test Wirecast settings before going live

  1. Check upload capacity. Run a speed test and compare the available upload bitrate with the target you plan to send. YouTube advises testing the connection and selecting a quality that it can reliably sustain.
  2. Run a representative preflight. Start a test with audio, movement, and production load similar to the planned broadcast. A static screen or idle scene may not reveal issues that appear during gameplay or other motion.
  3. Check YouTube Studio. Watch the stream health indicator and messages before and during the broadcast. Resolve warnings before treating the configuration as ready.
  4. Change one demanding setting at a time. If the test is unstable, lower the output resolution or frame rate, save the preset, and test again. This helps distinguish a settings or encoding load issue from a network problem.

YouTube Help specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Follow its encoder setup guidance and live stream health troubleshooting when interpreting Studio messages.

How do I stop dropped frames on Wirecast?

Dropped frames can result from network capacity, encoding load, or settings that are too demanding for the setup; a resolution change is a troubleshooting step, not proof that resolution caused the problem.

  • The computer appears overloaded or Wirecast struggles to encode: reduce resolution or frame rate and retest. Telestream’s support guidance suggests trying a lower-resolution encoding preset such as 1280×720 as a CPU troubleshooting step.
  • YouTube reports an encoder or format issue: confirm the selected codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and destination settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Use a codec supported by the Wirecast encoder you selected.
  • The stream does not appear at the expected resolution: check the dimensions in the selected Wirecast preset and whether YouTube Studio is set to automatic detection or manual resolution. If manual control is required, use a custom stream key and enable Stream Resolution settings.
  • The test looks fine but the live event fails: repeat the preflight with the actual scene changes, audio, and workload. Keep the stream key private and verify the event destination before starting.

Copyright and YouTube Live rules to check

Bitrate and resolution settings do not grant permission to stream the content. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights or necessary permission for gameplay footage, music, overlays, and other material in the stream. YouTube may apply its copyright policies to live broadcasts; check the current YouTube copyright guidance and live streaming eligibility and restrictions. Reused-content monetization rules are separate from encoder settings and from copyright permission; review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies if monetization is relevant.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping Wirecast and a computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
