GStreamer’s documented multifilesrc loop=true repeats a sequence of numbered files; it is not documented as a general single-video loop switch. For one video, use a playback application or element with a verified end-of-stream loop, then connect playback to a compatible encoder, muxer, and RTMP sink.
How the pipeline fits together
A live pipeline has three responsibilities:
- Playback: read the recording and repeat it when it ends. A repeat may need application-level end-of-stream handling rather than a source property.
- Encoding and muxing: produce media YouTube accepts and package it for the selected ingest protocol. For RTMP, GStreamer’s documented output shape uses encoded media,
flvmux, andrtmpsink. - Delivery: send the result to the stream-specific endpoint and stream name/key provided by YouTube Live Control Room or its API configuration.
These stages have different failure modes. A video that plays locally is not necessarily configured for YouTube ingest, and a connected RTMP sink does not itself make playback repeat.
Choose a playback method for the source
One prerecorded video
For a single file, arrange for playback to seek back to the start when it reaches end-of-stream. The reviewed GStreamer references do not establish a universal one-line gst-launch-1.0 command or a generic source property that loops any single video file. Use an application built around GStreamer, or a playback element/plugin whose single-file repeat behavior you have verified in your installed version.
When building application-level looping, handle end-of-stream by seeking to the beginning and resuming playback while keeping the outgoing live timestamps continuous. If the playback or muxing design does not handle the boundary correctly, the repeat can produce a timestamp discontinuity, a brief glitch, or a visible pause. Do not assume the loop will be seamless without testing the selected implementation.

A sequence of numbered files or image frames
multifilesrc is intended for sequentially named files. Its documented loop property starts the sequence over after all files have been read; the GStreamer example uses numbered PNG images. That is useful for frame sequences, but it does not establish a recipe for repeating one ordinary video file. See the GStreamer multifilesrc documentation.
Build the decode, encode, and RTMP output
The GStreamer rtmpsink documentation demonstrates the output end with a test pattern, an FLV encoder, flvmux, and an RTMP sink. Its example points to a localhost server; it is not a ready-to-run YouTube command, and the legacy ffenc_flv element shown there may not be installed in a current GStreamer build. See the rtmpsink documentation.

For a real recording, use the following as a pipeline design, not a universal copy-and-run command. Substitute a playback source that implements your verified loop, and select encoders and plugins available on your system that meet YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
- Decode the file. GStreamer’s
uridecodebinordecodebincan construct source, demux, and decoder paths automatically. The tutorial examples use separate decoded audio and video branches; your application or pipeline must connect each branch to the appropriate processing chain. - Normalize media as needed. Use
videoconvert, videoscale, andvideoratefor video format, size, or rate negotiation; useaudioconvertandaudioresamplefor audio negotiation. These adapters do not choose YouTube-compatible encoding settings for you. - Encode both branches. Choose an installed video encoder and audio encoder compatible with the selected YouTube ingest protocol and your source. Confirm the negotiated caps and inspect local plugin availability; encoder names and support vary by operating system, distribution, and installation.
- Mux for RTMP. For the documented RTMP output pattern, feed compatible encoded streams to
flvmux, then tortmpsink. The GStreamer tools tutorial’s H.264/AAC-to-MP4 example demonstrates transcoding concepts, but MP4 output is not itself a YouTube RTMP pipeline. See the handy-elements tutorial and GStreamer tools tutorial. - Set the sink location from YouTube’s configuration. Obtain the current ingestion URL and stream name/key for the stream you configured. Depending on the encoder interface, the URL and stream name may be separate or combined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Do not copy a stale endpoint from a tutorial or expose a real key in a script, public repository, or terminal recording.
The GStreamer documentation examples are reference material, not a tested end-to-end YouTube command. Verify that the required source, decoder, encoder, muxer, and sink elements exist in your installation, then check the negotiated media caps and the actual output before relying on a long unattended stream.

Configure YouTube ingest: RTMP or HLS
YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists RTMP (including RTMPS), HLS, and DASH ingest types and provides primary and backup ingestion addresses. Use the address supplied for the stream being configured. The generic rtmpsink pattern above is for RTMP-style output; do not assume it can generate a valid HLS stream.
| Choice | What to account for |
|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | Continuous delivery through an RTMP-capable sink such as GStreamer’s rtmpsink. Use the stream-specific endpoint and stream name/key supplied by YouTube. |
| HLS | YouTube documents segmented delivery and higher latency than continuous RTMP. Its HLS guidance specifies 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte range, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube Help also lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio for HLS. These are HLS-specific requirements, not settings to apply automatically to RTMP. |
If you deliberately configure HLS, select an HLS protocol/key in Live Control Room and use the HTTPS stream URL and required segment/playlist behavior described in YouTube Help’s HLS setup guidance. For RTMP, follow the endpoint and key details for your own stream in the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Test the loop and stream before leaving it unattended
- Confirm the file decodes locally and that both expected audio and video branches are present.
- Run the repeat behavior through at least one end-of-stream boundary. Look and listen for a pause, duplicated frames, missing audio, or an abrupt timestamp jump.
- Confirm that the installed GStreamer build has the source, decoder, converters, encoder, muxer, and transport elements your design uses.
- Start the YouTube broadcast with the current stream-specific endpoint and private key, then inspect the stream’s ingest status in Live Control Room or via the API.
- Watch the output through a repeat boundary and check that the stream remains active and the media remains synchronized before relying on it for a longer broadcast.
Troubleshoot by separating local and YouTube-side failures
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The pipeline fails to start with an unknown element or missing plugin. | Local GStreamer installation | Check the installed plugin set and choose available source, encoder, muxer, and sink elements. Documentation examples may use elements absent from your build. |
| Video or audio branches fail negotiation. | Decode and media caps | Inspect negotiated caps and add the relevant conversion or rate/size adapter, such as videoconvert, videoscale, videorate, audioconvert, or audioresample. |
| Playback ends instead of repeating, or there is a glitch at the boundary. | Loop control and timestamps | Check whether the implementation actually handles single-file end-of-stream. Verify seeking, resume behavior, and continuous outgoing timestamps; multifilesrc loop=true is documented for a sequential file set, not as a general one-file loop. |
| YouTube shows that no data is arriving. | Connection, sink location, or credentials | Check the current stream-specific ingestion address and stream name/key, network access, sink errors, and the selected protocol. Keep the key private. |
| YouTube receives data but reports an error or poor stream health. | Ingested media or encoder configuration | Check local pipeline errors, encoder compatibility, negotiated caps, and the protocol-specific requirements. Distinguish the API’s stream status from health: status values include active, inactive, and error; health states include good and ok. |
The YouTube Live Streaming API’s stream status can help locate the problem: active means data is being received, inactive means it is not, and error indicates an error state. Use that signal alongside local GStreamer logs rather than treating every failure as a playback-loop problem.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for prerecorded broadcasts
Only stream recordings and other material you have the rights to broadcast on YouTube. A file that plays successfully in GStreamer can still trigger a copyright claim or other YouTube enforcement. Also consider whether a repeated prerecorded broadcast offers original value to viewers: technical ability to loop a file does not establish that a channel or video meets YouTube’s monetization or reused-content requirements. Review the current rules that apply to your channel and content before scheduling a continuous stream.
