For a 24/7 YouTube podcast stream at 1080p30 using H.264, set the video bitrate to YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps. If your upload connection cannot sustain it reliably, use 720p30 at the recommended 8 Mbps instead. India has no separate YouTube bitrate preset: choose for the connection at your streaming location, test it under realistic conditions, and monitor stream health.
Choose the bitrate for your resolution and codec
Bitrate is not a single setting independent of picture format. Match YouTube’s live-ingest recommendation to the resolution, frame rate, and codec your encoder actually sends. The values below are YouTube’s live encoder recommendations, not guidance for uploading a finished video. YouTube’s current help page was accessed on October 3, 2026. YouTube live encoder settings.
| Format | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
For a typical H.264 podcast setup, 1080p30 at 14 Mbps is the starting recommendation when the uplink is dependable. Choose 720p30 at 8 Mbps if the connection cannot consistently carry the higher target. Minimum values are not ideal operating targets for an always-on show; a stream that repeatedly struggles to hold its target is a reason to reduce output quality rather than rely on a minimum.
Configure the YouTube stream and encoder
- Enable live streaming and create a stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select an encoder stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Choose the output format. Use a landscape layout such as 16:9 if the podcast visuals are designed for standard viewing. Set the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate to match the bitrate-table row you selected, such as 1920×1080 at 30 fps or 1280×720 at 30 fps.
- Set video encoding. Select H.264 if that is your encoder’s format, then set the corresponding recommended bitrate. Use CBR (constant bitrate), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where available. YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS; if using one, select its table values rather than H.264’s.
- Set audio separately. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists stereo audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. A video bitrate setting does not include this audio configuration.
- Start a realistic test. Send the usual podcast audio and visuals from the same location and network expected for the long-running stream. Check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for stream-health warnings while the encoder runs.
- Adjust based on results. If YouTube reports a bitrate problem or the encoder cannot keep up, lower the output resolution and use the recommendation for that format. Also verify the codec, audio format, and keyframe interval.
YouTube’s stream setup guidance explains stream configuration and latency options; its live streaming troubleshooting guidance covers common stream errors.

Decide between 1080p and 720p
Use the highest option that remains stable on the actual uplink, not the speed printed on an internet plan. A speed test and a realistic encoder test help establish whether upload capacity remains dependable while the stream is sending. The test should reflect the usual location and network conditions.
- Choose 1080p30 when the connection reliably sustains the H.264 target of 14 Mbps and the show benefits from the extra detail.
- Choose 720p30 when 1080p produces warnings, dropped frames, or inconsistent delivery; its H.264 recommendation is 8 Mbps.
- Evaluate motion, not just resolution. A mostly static podcast shot may appear acceptable at a lower bitrate than fast-moving footage, but YouTube does not publish a podcast-specific low-motion discount. Treat any lower setting as a practical choice to verify in testing.
YouTube’s advice to target upload speed at 1.5–2 times the combined stream bitrate applies to sending to multiple destinations at once. YouTube does not state that multiplier as a required margin for a single YouTube stream; for one destination, test the connection and choose quality appropriate to its dependable capacity. See YouTube’s upload-speed guidance for multiple streams.

Plan for a continuous stream
YouTube’s documented encoder table applies to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; the reviewed guidance does not give a separate 24/7 bitrate profile, maximum continuous duration, or uninterrupted-uptime guarantee. A prolonged test and a recovery procedure for lost connectivity or encoder restarts are sensible operational precautions, but YouTube does not prescribe a test duration.
For a podcast without live audience interaction, lower latency is less important according to YouTube. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, so normal latency is a reasonable default unless interaction or another format requirement makes reduced delay worthwhile.

YouTube currently documents limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Those are concurrency limits, not continuous-duration limits. A channel must also be verified and have live streaming enabled; first-time enablement can take at least 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live streaming access and availability requirements before scheduling a launch.
Troubleshoot bitrate and stream-health problems
- Bitrate warnings or dropped frames: The uplink may not be sustaining the target. Test under stream conditions, then move from 1080p30 to 720p30 and apply the matching bitrate recommendation.
- Encoder reports a format or stream error: Confirm the selected codec is supported for RTMP/RTMPS, the output resolution and frame rate match the intended table row, and the stream URL and key are correct.
- Keyframes or audio are rejected or flagged: Set a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds) and check for stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
- Stream cannot start: Verify live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the key has not been mistyped or exposed. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enablement may take at least 24 hours.
- Long-running stream stops: The documented bitrate table does not guarantee uninterrupted operation. Check the encoder and network, then use the recovery procedure prepared for connectivity loss or an encoder restart.
