Why Does OBS Stop Streaming to YouTube After a Few Hours?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS has no fixed multi-hour runtime limit established here. A stream that ends after hours is more often a connection failure, a YouTube broadcast-state issue, or a local encoder/application problem. Check OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room at the failure time before changing settings or buying equipment.

First, identify what actually stopped

At the next interruption, record the exact time and check both OBS and YouTube. A viewer-facing end screen alone does not tell you whether OBS disconnected, YouTube stopped receiving data, or the broadcast itself ended.

  • In OBS, note whether the stream still appears active and whether the dropped-frame counter increased.
  • In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check stream health and any displayed error message.
  • Note the stream duration and whether the YouTube broadcast ended or merely stopped receiving input.
  • Save the OBS log covering the failure. The log and timestamp help distinguish network, encoder, and application clues.

YouTube documents stream-health status and specific errors in Live Control Room, and its metrics interface shows stream duration during an event: YouTube Help: Monitor your live stream. Compare those messages with the OBS log rather than guessing from what viewers saw.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects

Dropped frames are a network clue. OBS explains that dropped frames mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. OBS says it is extremely unlikely that OBS Studio itself causes dropped frames. That does not identify which part of the network path is at fault, but it makes connection diagnostics the right first branch. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide was dated September 30, 2024.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Lower the bitrate as a test. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that as a troubleshooting estimate, not a guarantee: a speed test may not reflect stable capacity to YouTube’s ingest server over the whole stream. Change bitrate, then watch whether dropped frames recur.
  2. Try another available server or ingest point. OBS recommends testing a different server. If the symptoms change, that is useful evidence about the route, though it does not by itself prove the cause.
  3. Test without a VPN, then check security and network utilities. Temporarily disable a VPN for a controlled test. Check whether firewall or antivirus software, or network “optimizer” software, is interfering. If the test identifies security software as the cause, turn it back on and configure an OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
  4. Test a wired connection. Use Ethernet if practical and inspect the cable, router or modem, network adapter, and other network devices. A known-good cable is a useful test if you suspect the existing one; buying a cable will not fix VPN interference, ISP routing congestion, broadcast settings, or encoder faults. OBS recommends contacting your ISP before replacing network equipment if you are unsure.
  5. Contact your ISP if local tests do not resolve it. Provide failure timestamps and the pattern you observed. Congestion or routing changes may be outside your control; OBS notes that some connection problems cannot be fixed on the user’s side.
  6. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but this lowers stream quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.

For these steps and additional connection checks, see OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.

Check YouTube’s ingest health and encoder settings

YouTube’s stream-health message helps establish whether it is receiving an adequate input. If Live Control Room says input is missing or insufficient, compare that message with OBS’s output status, dropped-frame count, and log at the same time. Do not assume an encoder fault—or replace hardware—without matching evidence.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, the current guidance gives H.264 at 12 Mbps for 1080p60 and 6 Mbps for 720p60; these are table recommendations, not universal targets. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table and choose settings your connection can reliably sustain. The page’s publication date is not shown; these figures reflect the guidance accessed in 2026.

YouTube also recommends testing before an event using representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health during the event. A static test may not expose problems that appear with a more demanding game scene or audio mix. Review YouTube’s encoder guidance before changing codec or bitrate.

Check the scheduled broadcast’s stop behavior

A scheduled YouTube broadcast can behave differently from the incoming OBS feed. A community-authored OBS forum guide describes an Auto-stop option that ends a scheduled broadcast after streaming stops and prevents reconnecting to that same broadcast later without scheduling another one. The guide also says broadcasts eventually end after multiple hours with no incoming stream data even when Auto-stop is off. That control behavior does not prove that a multi-hour limit caused your incident, and turning Auto-stop off cannot repair a network or encoder failure.

Because this guidance is community-authored and YouTube’s interface can change, verify the current setting and wording in your account before relying on it: OBS forum guide to YouTube broadcast Auto-stop.

Use a controlled test to narrow the cause

Change one variable at a time and keep the failure timestamp. For example, first test a lower bitrate on the same network; then, if needed, test Ethernet or a different ingest point. If several settings and devices change together, it becomes harder to tell which one mattered.

  • OBS dropped frames rise and YouTube reports inadequate or missing input: investigate upload stability, route, VPN/security interference, and bitrate.
  • YouTube reports an ingest problem but OBS shows no obvious drop: compare the exact timestamps and OBS log with Live Control Room’s message before changing encoder settings.
  • OBS remains active but the YouTube broadcast ends: inspect the scheduled broadcast’s settings and state, including Auto-stop, and check whether YouTube stopped receiving data.
  • The connection appears stable but OBS stops outputting: review the OBS log around the event for local encoder or application errors; the available evidence does not establish a universal cause without that log.
  • The issue changes on Ethernet or another ingest point: keep testing the network path before replacing equipment. If it persists, share timestamps and test results with your ISP.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos while your gaming PC is off, StreamNeo is a different approach from diagnosing an OBS session: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, not from a camera.
