There is no single correct bitrate for every 24/7 FFmpeg stream. Choose YouTube’s live-ingest recommendation for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you will send, then test that rate on the actual upload connection. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Pair the bitrate with constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a representative test before relying on the stream.
Choose the bitrate for your codec and video mode
YouTube’s live-ingest guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Select a row and codec column matching the signal FFmpeg will actually send; do not use YouTube’s separate prerecorded-video upload recommendations as a substitute. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations; the page did not show a publication or update year and was accessed in 2026. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full table.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p30 | not stated here; consult the full YouTube table | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p60 | not stated here; consult the full YouTube table | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p30 | not stated here; consult the full YouTube table | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p60 | not stated here; consult the full YouTube table | 12 Mbps |
The listed H.264 minimums are not the recommended targets. Likewise, do not apply an H.264 number to AV1 or H.265: use the column for the codec you are sending. The exact operating bitrate still depends on your chosen output mode and tested connection.
Match the encoder settings to the selected row
- Bitrate mode: Set constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends for live encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds between keyframes.
- Resolution and frame rate: Ensure the output matches the dimensions and frames per second used to choose the bitrate. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Codec: YouTube’s live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Confirm that your FFmpeg build and chosen encoder support the codec you intend to send.
- Transport: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
YouTube Live Control Room uses automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. A custom stream key can be configured for manual settings. Obtain the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube’s live stream setup and enter them in your encoder configuration; keep the key private. See Manage live stream settings.

Configure and test the FFmpeg stream
FFmpeg supports RTMP output. Its documentation’s file-streaming example uses -re to read input in real time and FLV output to an RTMP destination. Treat this as a pattern, not a ready-to-run 24/7 command: input paths, codecs, encoding options, destination URL, and installed FFmpeg capabilities vary. Consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation and FFmpeg all-options and muxer documentation, and adapt the command for your source and build.
- Decide the outgoing format. Choose codec, resolution, and frame rate, then select the matching YouTube live bitrate recommendation.
- Set encoding behavior. Configure CBR, the chosen bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; keep the interval at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Use the correct YouTube destination. Retrieve the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup, select RTMPS where appropriate, and configure the encoder without exposing the key.
- Run a representative test. YouTube advises testing before the event with audio and movement like the intended stream. Test the actual upload connection at the chosen settings rather than assuming a speed-test result guarantees a steady stream.
- Check ingestion and health. Confirm the live preview or health status after startup and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. YouTube does not establish one universal upload-headroom multiplier, so avoid treating an invented buffer percentage as an official rule.
Plan recovery and monitoring for 24/7 operation
A bitrate setting does not make a stream continuous by itself. FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer recovery example that can continue processing after a temporary network failure and attempt recovery at one-second intervals. FIFO is one resilience mechanism, not a guarantee of uninterrupted viewer playback, a YouTube-side reconnect guarantee, or a universal command that works unchanged in every setup.

For an always-on deployment, define how the process is observed and brought back after failure. At minimum:
- Check encoder logs and YouTube stream health, not just whether the FFmpeg process exists.
- Alert on process exit or a sustained interruption in output.
- Document how the process restarts and how an operator verifies that YouTube is ingesting again.
- Test temporary network failures deliberately so you know how your specific command and environment behave.
The cited documentation supports testing, monitoring, and FFmpeg recovery options; it does not require a particular supervisor, hosting provider, machine class, or restart policy, nor does it establish an uptime level.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and ingest problems
YouTube reports poor stream health
Check that the sent codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate correspond to the selected YouTube table entry. Then test whether the actual upload connection sustains the chosen rate and inspect encoder logs for interruptions. YouTube advises monitoring its stream-health messages; a speed test alone is not proof of stable live ingest.
The stream will not ingest
Verify that FFmpeg is using the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup, that the destination protocol is configured correctly, and that the installed build supports the selected encoder and output path. Keep the stream key private; if it has been exposed, manage the stream settings in YouTube rather than continuing to publish the exposed value.

The stream drops and does not return cleanly
Inspect the FFmpeg log and the YouTube health status to distinguish an encoder exit from an ingest or network interruption. A FIFO recovery configuration may help with temporary network errors, but test the recovery behavior and define an operator check for resumed ingestion; the feature alone does not guarantee continuous playback.
The video mode and bitrate do not agree
Confirm the output’s actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. A change from 30 to 60 fps or from H.264 to AV1/HEVC changes which YouTube recommendation applies. In Live Control Room, automatic resolution/frame-rate detection is the default; use a custom stream key if you need manual settings.
