To shake a mature tree in Stardew Valley, interact with it; you do not need an axe or another tool. A seed is not guaranteed: a mature tree has a 5% chance each day to generate a loose seed that can fall when shaken, and shaking for seeds unlocks at Foraging Level 1.
How to shake a tree
- Find a mature tree and stand next to it.
- Use your normal interact action on the tree. Shaking is an interaction, not a tool action.
- Check the ground for a seed or other seasonal result; pick it up if one appears.
The tree does not produce a seed on every shake. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Trees reference describes a 5% daily chance for each mature tree to generate a loose seed that can drop when shaken. That is a chance for the tree to generate a seed, not a guarantee that interacting with it will yield one. The reference does not establish that repeated shaking forces a drop.

When shaking can produce seeds
Seeds from shaking become available when you reach Foraging Level 1. This differs from seed drops from chopping: the Trees reference says chopping drops become available after you sleep and see the level-up screen.
What different trees can drop
Common trees
Mature common trees can be shaken for a loose seed when one is available. The Trees reference lists shakeable common trees in Cindersap Forest, The Mountain, Railroad, Quarry, Bus Stop, Backwoods, and Town east of the river. Town trees west of the river cannot be chopped or tapped, but they can still be shaken for seeds.

Maple Trees in late Fall
A Maple Tree can normally yield a Maple Seed. From Fall 14 through Fall 28, however, shaking it produces a Hazelnut instead, according to the Maple Tree reference.
Green Rain trees
All three Green Rain tree types may drop a Mossy Seed when shaken. These tree types were introduced in version 1.6; see the Green Rain Trees reference.

A Tapper blocks ordinary direct shaking. To remove it, hit the Tapper once with an axe or pickaxe; it remains intact for reuse. There is a documented exception: if the tapped tree is covered in moss, removing the moss with a scythe or weapon also shakes the tree. Details are in the Tapper reference.
