There is no evidence-based number of hours that works for every couple. Treat any schedule as a joint experiment, not a rule.
Agree on what “fair” means before setting turns
Talk when neither person is waiting to use the screen. Each partner should name what they want the shared setup for and whether any plans are genuinely time-sensitive, such as a live broadcast or scheduled online match. Then compare what fairness means to each of you:
- Equal time, even if the uses differ.
- Predictable access on particular days or at particular times.
- Priority for activities that cannot easily be moved.
- A balance of solo time and time spent watching or playing together.
These priorities can conflict. Naming them first makes it easier to negotiate a workable plan than to argue over who gets the next turn.
Try a schedule you can actually revise
Write down a few predictable blocks or alternating turns, including separate-use time for each partner. If both want it, set aside some time for a show or game together. Keep the first version short and adjustable rather than treating it as permanent.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises families to make a media plan for everyone in the household and revisit it as circumstances change. That guidance is aimed at families, not a tested schedule for adult partners, but the planning approach can be adapted: How to Make a Family Media Plan.
For example, you could alternate evening turns on agreed days and reserve one evening for shared viewing. That is only a starting point; choose blocks that fit your routines rather than copying a universal split.

Make handoffs clear before a turn starts
Agree on how long a turn lasts and what counts as its end. A precise clock time is easy to understand, but a game may not stop cleanly at that minute. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner recommends setting a timer and agreeing to finish at the end of a round or at the next save point in its family gaming guidance: Family games.
For TV, an episode or program boundary can serve as a practical handoff. If a turn is nearly over but the agreed stopping point has not arrived, follow the rule you both chose rather than negotiating from scratch each time. A phone or console timer can help; a separate timer is optional.

Set a fair rule for exceptions
Decide together how much notice is reasonable for a fixed-time event and what happens if it overlaps the other person’s turn. One option is to let the fixed event take priority only when it was flagged in advance, then offer the displaced partner a comparable opportunity later. Avoid treating every preference as an emergency or assuming that one type of activity always matters more.
Review the trial and adjust
After trying the plan, ask each other whether access felt predictable and whether the arrangement got in the way of sleep, work, other responsibilities or time together. Change the blocks, turn length or exception rule if needed. The AAP’s family-plan guidance and eSafety’s game-time advice support revisiting media arrangements; applying them as a couple’s schedule is practical advice, not an evaluated intervention.

Keep device settings separate from scheduling
Profiles, passcodes and console-sharing settings can solve access or privacy problems, but they do not decide who gets the living-room screen at a particular time.
- The US Federal Trade Commission’s family guidance discusses using separate accounts and passcodes to manage access and purchases on shared devices. That advice is framed around families with children; it may be relevant if you share accounts or want to prevent accidental purchases, but it does not allocate turns: How to protect your child online.
- On PS5, Console Sharing and Offline Play can make purchased games and media, plus some PlayStation Plus benefits, available to other users on the enabled console, subject to Sony’s conditions. It can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. It concerns digital access, not household scheduling: Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5.
Neither feature replaces an agreement about turns. Keep account and purchase protections in place where you need them, and settle screen time separately.
