The purchase stays tied to the account that bought it; other users can play eligible content on the activated console. PlayStation Plus benefits follow separate sharing rules, and Plus is not required to share a game bought outright.
Share a digital purchase on PS5
PlayStation’s US support guidance, accessed October 7, 2026, says Console Sharing and Offline Play is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in with the account. To enable sharing on a different PS5:

- Sign in on that PS5 with the account that purchased the game.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable. If sharing is active on another PS5, disable it there first.
- Download the purchased game while signed in with the purchasing account. Other users of the enabled console can then play eligible purchased and downloaded games and media, including offline.
Only one PS5 at a time can have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled for an account. Sony says this setting does not change the account’s other console activation limits. PlayStation Support: Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5.
Share a digital purchase on PS4
On the account that bought the game, go to Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4, then select Activate. The first PS4 used with the account may already be activated automatically. Players using its primary PS4 can access applications purchased from PlayStation Store.

An account can have one primary PS4. It can also have one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled at the same time, so a household with both generations can activate each as described. PlayStation Support: Activate a primary PS4 console.
Who owns the game, and what other users can access
The Store purchase remains associated with the PlayStation account that paid for it; activating a console does not transfer ownership to a family member’s account. Instead, the activated console lets its other users access eligible content from the purchaser’s library. The purchaser should download the game using their account and keep the relevant sharing or primary-console setting active.

For an outright digital game purchase, PlayStation Plus is not a prerequisite for this console-sharing arrangement. Online multiplayer may have its own subscription requirement, and access to a Plus game is governed by the subscription rules rather than the rules for a permanent Store purchase.
What PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared
Sony’s sharing guidance lists selected Plus benefits for one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled and one primary PS4. Sharing a console does not share every benefit or let another account claim the purchaser’s entitlements as its own.

Catalog access depends on the plan and on whether a game remains in the catalog; a subscription title can leave. Check PlayStation Support’s current PlayStation Plus sharing guidance for current benefit and catalog details before relying on a particular game.
Child accounts and family controls
Sony says a family manager can share some main Plus benefits across one PS5 and one PS4. Child accounts remain limited by age ratings and the parental controls set by the parent; console sharing does not bypass those restrictions. Basic sharing of a purchased game is based on the console’s activation setting, not on a requirement to create a formal family group.

If a shared game is locked or missing
- Check the owner account: Confirm that the account whose library is being shared actually purchased the game, and that the game was downloaded on the console.
- Check activation: Verify Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the intended PS5, or that the PS4 is activated as the account’s primary console.
- Check subscription access: If the title came through PlayStation Plus, confirm the subscription is active and the game is still available under the plan.
- Check service and software: Sony identifies PlayStation service status, system software, and license or network problems as possible causes. Follow the platform’s license-restoration and troubleshooting guidance, then restart the console or router where applicable. Restore licenses on PlayStation.
If you no longer have the old console
Sony allows remote deactivation of all devices through Account Management, but the remote action can be used only once every six months. Because it affects all devices, use it only when you cannot deactivate the former console directly; you may need to activate the intended console again afterward. Console sharing is not Share Play
Console sharing is a local household-access setting. Share Play is a separate remote session where a visitor can watch or participate in the host’s gameplay. Sony’s PS5 instructions require the host to have PlayStation Plus; both players need Plus for the play-together mode, and the session ends automatically one hour after the visitor joins. It is not a way to give a family member permanent access to the purchased game on their own console. PlayStation Support: Share Play on PS5.
