For trying newly released games on Xbox or PC, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass is the stronger starting point: both advertise day-one games. For browsing a large rotating PlayStation catalog, PlayStation Plus Extra is the better fit; for limited-time trials of selected PlayStation games, look at Premium. There is no universal winner—the right choice depends on your hardware, the specific games you want to play, and whether you mean full catalog access or a time-limited trial.
Which subscription fits your way of trying games?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Try day-one releases on PC | PC Game Pass | Microsoft advertises day-one games and a PC library. Check that each target game is included and compatible with your PC. Xbox Game Pass plans |
| Try new releases across Xbox and supported devices | Game Pass Ultimate | Xbox advertises day-one games on Ultimate. Title, platform, region, and cloud eligibility can vary. Xbox Game Pass plans |
| Browse a rotating PS4 and PS5 catalog | PlayStation Plus Extra | Extra includes a Game Catalog with hundreds of games, with titles added regularly. Games can leave the catalog. PlayStation Plus plans |
| Sample selected PlayStation games with a limited-time trial | PlayStation Plus Premium | Premium includes trials for selected titles, not every game in the catalog. PlayStation Plus plans |
| Play through the cloud | Compare device, region, eligible games, and time limits | Both services have restrictions. Xbox’s announced monthly cloud-hour limits begin in November 2026; PlayStation cloud streaming is limited by eligible titles and territories. Xbox cloud gaming update PlayStation Plus plans |
These are starting points, not guarantees that a particular game is available. Xbox says its titles, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Sony also notes that catalog games can have announced departure dates. Check the live catalog and your plan’s eligibility before subscribing.
Does Game Pass have new games on day one?
Xbox lists day-one games for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. That makes either plan a compelling choice if your goal is to try newly released games on supported Xbox or PC devices. It does not mean every new release—or every game you want—is included.
Xbox Premium includes select Xbox-published games within one year of launch, rather than day one. Essential does not include new release titles on day one. Ultimate also includes EA Play, which provides trials of select new EA games; that benefit should not be read as a trial of every Game Pass title. See Xbox’s current plan details

Does PlayStation Plus have game trials?
Yes, but trials are a Premium feature and apply only to selected games. They provide limited-time access to try a title; they are different from downloading a game through the broader catalog. Sony describes Premium as also including the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming. PlayStation Plus plan features
Extra is the more relevant PlayStation tier if you want a large library to browse rather than a timed trial of a particular game. Sony describes its Game Catalog as containing hundreds of games. Essential focuses on monthly games and online multiplayer for games that require it; it does not add the Extra Game Catalog or Premium trials.

How the tiers compare for trying games
| Service and tier | What it offers for trying games | Important qualification |

| Xbox Game Pass Premium | 200+ games, according to Xbox’s US plan page; selected Xbox-published titles within one year of launch; 10 monthly cloud hours beginning November 2026 | Not a day-one tier. Xbox plan details Cloud limits announcement |
| Xbox Game Pass Ultimate | 500+ games, according to Xbox’s US plan page; day-one games; EA Play; 15 monthly cloud hours beginning November 2026 | Cloud use and game availability vary by title, device, and region. Xbox plan details Cloud limits announcement |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games, according to Xbox’s US plan page; day-one games and EA Play | Cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass. Xbox plan details |
| PlayStation Plus Essential | Monthly games and online multiplayer for games that require it | Monthly games require an active membership. From January 2026, Sony says PS4 games will be added only intermittently. PlayStation Plus plan details |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | Game Catalog with hundreds of games | Catalog titles can leave; check announced end dates. PlayStation Plus plan details |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, selected trials, and cloud streaming | Trials are selective; cloud streaming depends on territory, eligible game, and connection. PlayStation Plus plan details |
Catalog counts are each service’s own plan-page claims, not independent measurements of library size. They do not establish whether a specific game is currently included.
Can you keep playing a game after it leaves the catalog?
Catalog access is temporary. Xbox says access ends when your subscription expires or a title leaves the service. Sony identifies announced end dates for some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games; monthly PlayStation Plus games also require an active membership. If you are partway through a game, check its removal date and decide whether you can finish it before access ends.

What to check before subscribing
- Confirm your hardware. Choose only plans that support the device you intend to use. PC Game Pass is for PC; cloud streaming is not the same as local console or PC access.
- Make a shortlist of three to five games. Check each title in the service’s live catalog, including the correct platform and plan. A broad catalog claim does not prove that your target game is included today.
- Decide what “try” means to you. If you want to sample a specific PlayStation game for a limited time, check whether it has a Premium trial. If you want to explore full games from a rotating library, compare the Game Catalog or Game Pass catalog instead.
- Compare the cost for the time you expect to play. Use your local checkout price and the intended subscription length. Include the possibility that a catalog game may leave before you finish it.
- Check cloud requirements if you will stream. For PlayStation Premium, Sony lists a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p, and streaming is limited to eligible games and territories. Xbox’s announced limits of 5 hours on Essential, 10 on Premium, and 15 on Ultimate begin in November 2026; it also announced an option from that month to buy cloud playtime and stream eligible owned games without Game Pass. PlayStation streaming details Xbox cloud changes
Bottom line: choose by the games you want to try
Choose PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate if day-one releases are your priority and your target games are included on your device. Choose PlayStation Plus Extra to browse a rotating PlayStation catalog, or Premium if you specifically want selected timed trials, classics, or cloud streaming. Before paying, verify the exact games, tier, and local price; no catalog-size claim can substitute for that check.
