How to Share PHP Sessions Across Multiple Memcached Servers

A practical guide to sharing PHP sessions across Memcached nodes, covering php-memcached versus memcache syntax, consistent hashing, locking, replicas, proxy compatibility, eviction, and failover testing.

Put every PHP worker on the same Memcached session pool, use the same session cookie and handler settings, and enable consistent hashing and session locking. A request can then reach any worker and retrieve the session by its key instead of depending on load-balancer stickiness.

The configuration below targets the php-memcached extension. The older memcache extension uses different directive names and a different session.save_path format, so identify the extension actually loaded by each PHP runtime before copying a setting.

How shared PHP sessions work

PHP does not share an in-process session automatically. Each request carries a session identifier in a cookie; the session handler uses that identifier as a key in its configured store. With several application servers, every worker must be able to resolve the same key to the same Memcached pool.

A typical flow is:

  1. The browser sends the session cookie to whichever application server receives the request.
  2. That worker’s PHP session handler hashes the session key across the configured Memcached servers.
  3. The worker reads, updates, and writes the session value in Memcached.
  4. A later request can arrive at another worker and repeat the lookup against the same pool.

If workers have different server lists, different handler names, or incompatible cookie settings, users will appear to log in and out unpredictably, lose cart state, or receive a fresh session when traffic moves between workers.

Choose the extension before configuring it

PHP has two commonly encountered extensions with similar names but materially different controls. Do not mix examples from one extension with the other.

Area php-memcached memcache
Session handler value session.save_handler = memcached session.save_handler = memcache
Server-list syntax Comma-separated hostname:port entries Comma-separated URLs such as tcp://host1:11211, tcp://host2:11211
Consistent hashing memcached.sess_consistent_hash; hash type can support ketama and ketama_weighted where available A consistent hash strategy is available to reduce remapping when servers change
Session locking memcached.sess_locking, enabled by default in the documented configuration The extension exposes different failover and redundancy controls; do not assume the php-memcached locking directives exist
Failover and redundancy controls memcached.sess_number_of_replicas, memcached.sess_remove_failed_servers, and related failure settings memcache.allow_failover, memcache.max_failover_attempts, and memcache.session_redundancy
Protocol setting memcached.sess_binary_protocol Uses the memcache extension’s own connection behavior

Check the loaded module and effective values in the PHP runtime that serves web requests, not only in a command-line PHP installation. A command-line configuration can differ from the web server’s PHP-FPM or Apache configuration.

Requirements every worker must satisfy

  • Load the same session extension and use the same session.save_handler value.
  • Use an equivalent, complete Memcached server list in session.save_path. Hostnames, ports, ordering conventions, and hash settings should be kept consistent across workers.
  • Use compatible session cookie settings. A cookie name, scope, security attributes, or lifetime mismatch can prevent a worker from receiving the identifier even when Memcached itself is healthy.
  • Allow every worker to reach every configured Memcached endpoint through firewalls, security groups, routing, and DNS.
  • Keep the PHP extension and its documented directive set at compatible versions across the fleet. Directive names and defaults can differ between versions.

Memcached is an in-memory cache, not a durable database. The shared pool removes dependence on a particular PHP worker, but it does not guarantee that a session survives eviction, a node loss, or a full cluster restart.

Configure a shared pool with php-memcached

1. Set one server list and handler on every worker

For the php-memcached extension, a representative configuration is:

session.save_handler = memcached
session.save_path = "sess-a:11211,sess-b:11211,sess-c:11211"
memcached.sess_consistent_hash = On
memcached.sess_locking = On

The value of session.save_path is a comma-separated pool of hostname:port entries. Apply the same pool to every PHP worker that may serve the application. The names above are examples of endpoint labels; replace them with the addresses resolvable from your own workers.

2. Keep application and cookie settings aligned

The session handler only sees a request if the browser sends the expected session cookie. Make the application-level session name and all cookie attributes identical across deployments. This includes the cookie’s scope and security behavior, not merely the Memcached settings. Deploying one worker with a different cookie name creates a second session namespace even when both workers point to the same servers.

3. Verify key reachability before sending traffic

From each PHP worker, confirm that every listed Memcached endpoint is reachable on its configured port and that name resolution returns the intended address. A pool is only as available as its least reachable path: if one worker can contact two nodes while another can contact only one, users can experience different behavior depending on routing.

Consistent hashing and what it can—and cannot—preserve

Enable memcached.sess_consistent_hash for session connections. The PHP documentation describes this as using consistent hashing (libketama) for session handling. Its purpose is to limit how many keys move when a node is added or removed.

Without consistent hashing, changing the server list can remap a large portion of session keys. Many users may then appear to have empty sessions even though the old nodes still contain data. Consistent hashing reduces that disruption by keeping most keys assigned to their previous nodes.

Hash type and weighting

Where the installed php-memcached version supports it, memcached.sess_consistent_hash_type can select ketama or ketama_weighted. Use a weighted strategy only when the capacity difference between nodes is intentional and documented. Confirm that the directive exists in the exact extension version before adding it; configuration files containing unsupported directives can be misleading if the runtime silently ignores them or reports a startup warning.

Node removal is not data replication

Consistent hashing does not copy a session to a replacement node. If a node is removed while it holds the only copy of a key, that session can still be lost. The feature limits remapping for keys whose original node remains available; it cannot recover an evicted or destroyed value.

Why session locking matters

Browsers and front ends commonly issue parallel requests: an AJAX call, a page navigation, and an API request can all use one session identifier at nearly the same time. If each request reads the same old value and then writes its own update without coordination, the last write can overwrite changes made by another request.

For ordinary PHP sessions, leave memcached.sess_locking = On. The documented default is On. Locking makes a request acquire coordination for the session key before modifying it, so concurrent requests do not freely perform conflicting read-modify-write cycles.

Tuning lock waits

php-memcached exposes memcached.sess_lock_wait_min, memcached.sess_lock_wait_max, memcached.sess_lock_retries, and memcached.sess_lock_expire. Do not change these simply to make a timeout disappear. First measure how long session-using requests run and how often the same session receives concurrent traffic.

  • If lock waits are too short, a legitimate request may give up while another request still owns the lock.
  • If waits and retries are excessive, a slow request can make a burst of parallel requests queue and increase latency.
  • If the lock expiry is shorter than the longest normal session operation, the lock can expire while the original request is still writing, defeating the protection.

Change one setting at a time, observe wait time and request errors, and keep the values consistent across workers.

Replicas, failed nodes, and recovery behavior

php-memcached can write additional copies by setting memcached.sess_number_of_replicas. The PHP documentation calls this “poor man’s HA”: replicas can reduce the chance that one node failure immediately removes every copy, but they do not turn Memcached into strongly consistent, durable storage.

What a replica protects against

A replica may let the handler find a session on another node when the primary node is unavailable, depending on the extension’s connection and failure behavior. This is useful for reducing the impact of a single cache-node failure, but it increases network and memory usage and still depends on the failure-detection path working correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Returning nodes can contain stale data

If a failed server returns, it may contain an old value or no value at all. A worker that resumes using it can therefore observe stale or missing session data. Treat node reintegration as a recovery event: decide whether to flush or rebuild the node, verify the effective server list, and watch for session anomalies while traffic is restored.

Removing failed servers

memcached.sess_remove_failed_servers and its failure-limit settings can keep a repeatedly failing endpoint out of rotation. Enable this only with a recovery plan. Otherwise a transient network fault can remove a healthy node from consideration without an operator knowing how or when it will return.

Binary protocol and proxy compatibility

Set memcached.sess_binary_protocol to match the protocol expected by the installed extension and any Memcached proxy. The PHP memcached reference states that libmemcached replicas work only when binary mode is enabled. At the same time, some proxies, including twemproxy, require binary protocol to be disabled.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That creates a deployment constraint:

  • Direct php-memcached connections using libmemcached replicas require binary mode.
  • A proxy that accepts only the text protocol requires binary mode to be off.
  • You cannot assume that a setting suitable for direct node connections is suitable when a proxy is inserted.

Check the proxy’s protocol support, set the directive accordingly, and verify the effective value with phpinfo() or equivalent configuration inspection. Test failover and ordinary reads after changing it; a connection that succeeds does not prove that replica operations are functioning.

Expiration, eviction, and capacity planning

Set session.gc_maxlifetime deliberately. The value expresses how long PHP considers an inactive session eligible for garbage collection, but the Memcached pool must also retain the item for that period. If the cache reaches capacity and evicts active session keys earlier, users can lose sessions before the PHP lifetime is reached.

Checks to make before rollout

  • Compare expected concurrent session volume and serialized session size with the memory available on every node.
  • Inspect eviction counters and item age during a realistic traffic window.
  • Allow headroom for non-session cache entries if the same Memcached pool serves other workloads.
  • Confirm that the configured expiration and the cache’s eviction behavior are compatible with the application’s tolerance for session loss.

Neither the PHP handler settings nor replicas promise persistence across a total Memcached restart. Applications that cannot tolerate losing authentication or workflow state should evaluate a durable shared session store or implement an application-level recovery path instead of treating Memcached as permanent storage.

Deploying without creating split-brain session behavior

  1. Inventory the runtime. Record the PHP version, loaded session extension, extension version, and effective values for the session and memcached directives on every worker class.
  2. Standardize the configuration. Distribute one handler choice, one complete server pool, one hashing policy, one locking policy, and matching cookie settings.
  3. Validate connectivity. From each worker network, test name resolution and TCP reachability to every endpoint in the pool.
  4. Warm a controlled session. Log in through a test route, record the session identifier, and send successive requests through different workers. Each request should observe the same session state.
  5. Exercise concurrency. Generate two overlapping requests that update different session fields. With locking enabled, verify that one update does not disappear because of an uncontrolled last write.
  6. Test node failure. Remove one node from service in a maintenance window and observe whether the chosen replica or failover policy behaves as intended. Record whether the test session survives; do not assume it will.
  7. Reintroduce the node deliberately. Decide how stale contents are handled before bringing a recovered node back into rotation.
  8. Monitor after release. Watch session-miss rates, authentication failures, lock wait time, Memcached evictions, connection errors, and node-removal events.

Troubleshooting common symptoms

Symptom Likely cause Focused check or correction
Users lose sessions only after load balancing is enabled Workers do not share the same handler, server pool, or cookie settings Compare effective PHP configuration and application cookie settings on the workers receiving the user’s requests.
Many sessions disappear after adding or removing a node Consistent hashing is disabled or configured differently Enable memcached.sess_consistent_hash everywhere and keep the hash type consistent; remember that keys on a removed node cannot be recovered.
Parallel requests overwrite one another Session locking is disabled, bypassed, or expiring too soon Keep memcached.sess_locking enabled and measure request duration before tuning lock waits and expiry.
Replica configuration has no effect Binary protocol is disabled, or a proxy does not support the required mode Check memcached.sess_binary_protocol, the extension version, and proxy protocol requirements.
A recovered node returns old login or cart data The node retained stale entries while it was out of service Follow the recovery plan: decide whether to clear or rebuild the node before returning it to the pool.
Sessions expire sooner than session.gc_maxlifetime Memcached eviction or insufficient capacity removed the key first Inspect memory pressure and eviction counters, then increase capacity or isolate sessions from competing cache data.
Only some workers fail to connect Network, DNS, firewall, or per-worker configuration differs Test every endpoint from each worker network and compare the runtime’s effective session.save_path.

When Memcached is the wrong session store

A multi-node Memcached pool is appropriate when sessions are small, recoverable, and allowed to disappear under cache pressure or infrastructure failure. Consistent hashing, locking, and replicas improve behavior within those limits; none supplies transactional durability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a durable shared session design when losing a session would create unacceptable consequences, such as an irreplaceable multi-step transaction or a compliance-sensitive workflow. The alternative might be a durable session database, a replicated key-value service designed for persistence, or an application-specific mechanism that can reconstruct state. The important decision is to make loss and recovery behavior explicit rather than assuming that multiple cache nodes equal permanent storage.

Configuration checklist

  • Every worker loads the intended extension and the same handler value.
  • session.save_path contains the same complete pool in the syntax required by that extension.
  • Session cookie settings are compatible across all application servers.
  • Consistent hashing is enabled and its hash type is supported by the installed version.
  • Session locking remains enabled unless the application has deliberately replaced PHP’s coordination model.
  • Lock wait and expiry values are based on measured request concurrency and duration.
  • Replica, failed-server removal, and failure-limit settings have a documented recovery procedure.
  • Binary protocol mode matches both the extension and any proxy in the path.
  • session.gc_maxlifetime, cache capacity, and eviction behavior have been considered together.
  • Monitoring can distinguish a normal session miss from node failure, eviction, or configuration drift.
