To share live PS5 gameplay, put the intended viewers in a party, open the party voice chat card, select the Share Screen icon, and choose Start Share Screen. Friends in that party can then open the Share Screen notification or the party’s ON AIR indicator to watch your game in real time. You can also start from the Create menu or a friend’s profile. Share Screen is for watching; if you want a friend to take control or play with you, use Share Play instead.
What PS5 Share Screen does
PlayStation describes Share Screen as a way for players in a party to watch your gameplay in real time, “as if you’re all in the same room.” The feature sends the game display and game audio to other players in the party. It does not show other PS5 screens or non-game applications, and a game can make particular scenes unavailable to viewers. The official instructions are available in PlayStation’s PS5 Share Screen support guide.

Share Screen is therefore the right tool when friends should observe what you are playing without taking over your controller. It is separate from Share Play, which is designed for shared control or playing together and has its own membership, time and account restrictions.
Recommended Free Tools
Think of Share Screen as a live party viewing window rather than a general broadcast. Your selected party members receive access to the current game view and sound. The feature is useful for showing a level, watching a friend attempt a difficult section, or letting several party members follow the same match without joining the game themselves.

Before you start: put everyone in the right party
Share Screen is party-based. Start or join the party that contains the friends who should watch. You can begin from the party voice chat card, the Create menu, or an individual friend’s profile. The party route is the most direct when several people will watch at once.
- Several viewers: create or join the party voice chat that includes everyone you want to invite.
- One friend: you can still use a party, or open that friend’s profile and start sharing from there.
- Already in a party voice chat: the Share Screen controls are available on its voice chat card.
PlayStation’s instructions do not identify a capture card, special controller or headset as a requirement for Share Screen. The feature is a PS5 system function; the essential setup is the console party and the friends who will receive the invitation. A headset can still be useful for talking, but it is not listed as a prerequisite for sending the game screen.
Before pressing Start Share Screen, check that the intended viewers are in the correct party. Starting from a different party can notify the wrong people, while a friend who is not in that party may not see the expected party notification. If the group changes later, use the party controls to manage who is present rather than assuming every friend on your friends list can see the session.
How to start Share Screen from a party
- Join an existing party or create a new party with the friends who should watch.
- Open the party voice chat card.
- Select the Share Screen icon.
- Select Start Share Screen.
When sharing begins, a notification tells you and the party members that Share Screen has started. The party is now the place where those members can open the stream and watch your game. Tell friends which party you used if you belong to more than one, since the notification and ON AIR marker are tied to that party.
Other ways to start sharing
Use the Create button
- Press the PS5 controller’s Create button.
- Choose Share Screen.
- If you are already in party voice chat, choose Start Share Screen.
- If you are not in a suitable party, create or configure one, then start sharing.
This route is useful when you are already in a game and do not want to navigate to the party card first. The destination is the same live Share Screen session; only the starting point changes. If the Create menu leads you to party setup first, finish choosing the intended party before starting the share.
Start from a friend’s profile
- Open the friend’s profile.
- Select the Share Screen icon.
- Start sharing to invite that friend.
Use this profile route when the person you want to watch is easier to reach from your friends list than from a party conversation. It is especially straightforward for a one-person viewing session; for a group, the party voice chat card makes the audience easier to confirm.
How a friend watches on PS5
A party member receives a notification when someone starts Share Screen. The viewer has several ways to open it:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Press the PS button.
- Open Notifications.
- Select the Share Screen notification.
A Share Screen card also appears in the Control Center. In a joinable party, look for the ON AIR icon: it identifies a party in which someone is sharing. Joining that party lets the viewer watch the shared gameplay.
The notification and Control Center card are useful when the viewer is already signed in but has not opened the party. The ON AIR marker is useful when the viewer is choosing a joinable party from the console interface. If a friend says there is no stream, first have them check the party they joined, then Notifications and Control Center; those checks distinguish a missed notification from being in the wrong party.
The viewer is watching the host’s live game screen, not opening a separate copy of the game. They do not need to start the title themselves to view the host’s session. What appears is limited to what the game allows Share Screen to show.
How a viewer requests your screen
The viewer does not always have to wait for a host-initiated invitation. From the party voice chat card, a viewer can select the player whose screen they want and choose Request Share Screen. This sends a request to that friend to share gameplay.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The request is different from starting a stream yourself: the friend whose screen is requested remains the person who starts sharing. If several players are in the party, select the specific player before choosing the request command. A request therefore helps when a group is already talking and one person wants to ask another to begin, but it does not turn the requester into the host or grant control of the game.

Watching through the PlayStation App
The PlayStation App can request and display a friend’s PS5 Share Screen. The official app instructions are at PlayStation App support.
- Open the app and select Friends.
- Select the friend’s online ID.
- Choose Request Share Screen.
When the friend invites you, you can watch in the voice chat room. Depending on how the invitation arrives, playback can start automatically in that room or from its notification while the app is running in the background.
The app includes video-resolution and autoplay settings. If you want playback to behave differently when invitations arrive, adjust those settings in the app rather than changing the PS5 party procedure. The app is a viewer/request path; the PS5 remains the console that shares its game screen.

For an app viewer, the sequence is still request, invitation and playback. Selecting a friend’s online ID identifies whose screen you want; it does not automatically make that friend share. The friend must start or accept the Share Screen session on the PS5 side. If playback does not begin immediately, check the voice chat room and the app notification, then review the app’s autoplay and resolution choices.
What viewers can and cannot see
Included in the stream
- The current game screen.
- Game audio.
- Optional viewer interaction overlays, if the host enables them.
Not included or not guaranteed
- Other PS5 system screens.
- Non-game applications.
- Any game scene that the title makes unavailable to viewers.
That separation matters if you switch away from the game: friends should not be expected to see non-game apps through Share Screen. It also explains why a viewer may encounter a blocked or unavailable scene even though the Share Screen session is still active. Scene availability is controlled by the game, so the host cannot promise that every menu, cutscene or gameplay section will be visible.
Share Screen is not described as a recording or permanent upload feature. Its purpose is real-time party viewing. Friends watch what is currently being shared, subject to the game’s scene restrictions, rather than receiving a separate saved video.
Enable and manage Viewer Interactions
The host can let viewers interact with the shared image in real time. Open the party voice chat card’s Share Screen controls before sharing starts or while sharing is in progress, then enable Viewer Interactions.
With the option enabled, viewers can:
- Move a pointer over the shared screen.
- Send a ping.
- Draw on the screen.
- Send reactions.
These actions appear in real time to the host and viewers. The host can adjust where reactions appear or turn Viewer Interactions off from the same Share Screen controls. Turning the option off removes these interactive annotations while leaving the ordinary game-screen-and-audio purpose of Share Screen separate.
Interactions are optional, so you can use Share Screen as a clean watch-only view or enable them when feedback is useful. For example, a friend can point toward an objective or mark part of the image without taking over the controller. If the pointers, drawings or reactions become distracting, disable the option rather than ending the underlying viewing session.
Share Screen versus Share Play
The names are similar, but the two features answer different questions. Use Share Screen when friends should watch. Use Share Play when the session involves handing over control or playing together.
| Question | Share Screen | Share Play |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Let party members watch your gameplay in real time. | Let a visitor take control or play together with the host. |
| What is shown or done | Game screen and audio are streamed to viewers; optional pointer, ping, drawing and reaction tools can be enabled. | Interaction is built around shared play or control rather than passive viewing. |
| Typical PS5 viewer route | Join the party, open the Share Screen notification or Control Center card, or enter a party marked ON AIR. | Start a Share Play session from the PS5 Share Play controls. |
| PS4 friend watching a PS5 screen | PlayStation directs this case to Share Play rather than ordinary PS5 party Share Screen. | Use Share Play for the documented PS4-to-PS5 viewing case. |
| PlayStation Plus | The Share Screen guide does not state a separate PlayStation Plus requirement. | PlayStation says starting Share Play requires PlayStation Plus; which modes require membership from both players depends on the mode. |
| Session and other limits | The Share Screen guide identifies scene availability limits but does not state a fixed session duration. | Share Play sessions are limited to one hour and can also be affected by age, region, parental-control and scene restrictions. |
For the full Share Play conditions and modes, see PlayStation’s PS5 Share Play support guide. Do not choose Share Play merely because a friend wants to watch from another PS5: ordinary watching among PS5 party members is what Share Screen is built to provide.
The practical decision is simple: if the friend only needs to see and hear the game, start Share Screen. If the friend needs to control your game, play alongside you, or is using the documented PS4 viewing route, start Share Play and check its conditions first. The two features are not interchangeable shortcuts for the same session.

Which method should you use?
You are already talking in a party
Use the party voice chat card. It keeps the viewers and the sharing command in one place: open the card, select the Share Screen icon and choose Start Share Screen.
You are in a game and want the quickest console shortcut
Press Create, choose Share Screen, then start the share if the party is ready. If there is no appropriate party, configure one from that flow before starting.
You want to invite one particular friend
Open the friend’s profile, select the Share Screen icon and start sharing. The profile route is aimed at that friend rather than a broad party setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Your friend wants to ask you to share
Have the viewer select your player on the party voice chat card and choose Request Share Screen. On the app, the viewer can make the same kind of request from Friends, your online ID and Request Share Screen.
The friend is using a PS4
Use Share Play for the documented PS4 viewer scenario. PlayStation’s Share Screen guidance specifically points to Share Play for sharing a PS5 screen with a friend using PS4.
You want several people to follow the same game
Start with the party voice chat card rather than a single profile. Confirm that each intended viewer is in that party, then have them use the notification, Control Center card or ON AIR marker. This keeps one live session associated with the group instead of sending separate invitations one friend at a time.
Troubleshooting the common points of confusion
The friend cannot find the stream
Confirm that both people are in the intended party. On PS5, the viewer should press PS, open Notifications and select the Share Screen notification, or check the Share Screen card in Control Center. If the party is joinable, the ON AIR icon identifies the party where sharing is active.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe viewer is looking for another app or system menu
Share Screen only shares the game screen and audio. Other screens and non-game applications are not visible through this feature, so the absence of those elements is expected rather than a failed stream.
A particular game scene is hidden
Some scenes may be unavailable depending on the game. A blocked scene does not change Share Screen’s basic scope; the title can limit what viewers see even while the session continues.
The viewer wants to control the game
Share Screen is a viewing feature. Switch to Share Play when the goal is for a visitor to take control or play together, and check the Share Play membership and restriction rules before starting.
Viewer annotations are distracting
Open the party voice chat card’s Share Screen controls and turn Viewer Interactions off. The host can also adjust reaction placement instead of disabling the entire sharing session.
The app does not start playback as expected
In the PlayStation App, invitations can open the stream in the voice chat room or from the notification while the app is in the background. Check the app’s video-resolution and autoplay settings if the playback behavior does not match the viewer’s preference.

The request went to the wrong player
In a busy party, the viewer must select the specific player before choosing Request Share Screen. Reopen the party voice chat card, choose the intended player and send the request again. A request identifies the host whose screen is wanted; it does not start sharing from whichever player is currently highlighted elsewhere in the interface.
The group is using the wrong feature
If everyone can watch but nobody can take control, that is normal for Share Screen. If shared control or play together is the goal, leave the viewing flow and use Share Play. If a PS4 friend is involved, use the Share Play route PlayStation documents for that cross-console case.

- Put every intended viewer in the correct party.
- Start Share Screen from the party voice chat card, Create menu or friend’s profile.
- Tell viewers to use their PS5 notification, Control Center Share Screen card or the party’s ON AIR icon.
- If a viewer wants to initiate the request, have them select your player and choose Request Share Screen.
- Decide whether Viewer Interactions should be enabled before or during the session.
- Remember that only the game screen and audio are shared; non-game apps are not.
- If shared control or a PS4 viewer is involved, use Share Play and account for its separate requirements and limits.
- If someone is watching through the PlayStation App, have them check the voice chat room, app notification, video-resolution and autoplay settings.
- If a scene is unavailable, treat it as a game-specific visibility restriction rather than assuming the party share failed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I share PS5 gameplay without a capture card?
