To show the current song on a 24/7 YouTube music stream, add a track-information overlay to the video you send to YouTube. The overlay needs a source for the current track’s metadata—such as a player’s local API or a VLC-aware script—and a visual layer in OBS. Changing the YouTube broadcast title or description does not create a changing label inside the video.
What you need for a live now-playing label
A visible track label has two parts: current-track information supplied by the playback source, and an overlay included in the outgoing video. OBS can display that information as text, artwork, or another layout. The right method depends on where the music is playing; the integrations below are not universal bridges for every player.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a live broadcast as an event and provides fields such as title and description for the broadcast’s video metadata. Those fields are separate from graphics in the transmitted picture. For the visible, changing track label, use an overlay. Google’s Live Streaming API reference states: “A liveBroadcast resource represents an event that will be streamed, via live video, on YouTube.”
Choose a method based on your playback source
| Playback source | Suitable route | Key limitation or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Local music playing through a VLC Video Source in OBS | OBS script that reads VLC media tags and exports the current song to a text file | The documented resource lists Linux, OBS 27.0 or later with Python scripting enabled, and Python 3. Mutagen is optional and recommended for better metadata reading. |
| Music playing in YTMDesktop2 | YTMDesktop2 local API connected to an OBS Browser Source | Applies when playback is actually running through YTMDesktop2; it is not documented as reading arbitrary players. |
| Another player or a YouTube browser tab | Identify the exact player and find a compatible metadata integration before building the overlay | The documented routes do not establish a universal metadata bridge for other players or browser playback. |
Set up a VLC now-playing text overlay
This route fits a stream where music is playing from a VLC Video Source in OBS. The script reads the media’s tags, can format fields such as title and artist, and can write the current song to a text file that OBS displays.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm the requirements. The OBS resource lists Linux, OBS 27.0 or higher with Python scripting enabled, and Python 3. Mutagen is optional; the resource recommends it for better metadata reading. Check the script’s current resource page for its installation and setup instructions: OBS VLC Now Playing resource.
- Check the track metadata. Make sure the files’ title, artist, and, where useful, album tags are populated. The script can fall back to a filename when tags are missing, but a filename may not produce a clean or accurate label.
- Configure the script for the VLC Video Source. Follow the resource’s current instructions to select the source and choose the output text file and format. A documented example format is
{title} - {artist}. - Add the text file to the OBS scene. Add or configure a Text source to read the file the script exports. Place and size it over the video, then check that contrast and font size remain readable over the visuals.
- Test transitions and restarts. Play tracks with complete tags, missing tags, and long titles. Check that the displayed text changes at a track transition and after restarting the player or OBS. This is a practical verification checklist, not a guarantee of long-duration timing or reliability.
Connect YTMDesktop2 to an OBS Browser Source
If playback runs through YTMDesktop2, its documented integration uses the app’s local API to provide an overlay page for OBS. The documentation offers a full card, compact card, title-and-artist text, badge, fullscreen artwork, vertical stack, and ticker layouts. Artwork, title, artist, and progress can be toggled.
- Enable the local API in YTMDesktop2 using the app’s instructions.
- Open the app’s OBS settings and copy the OBS URL for the layout you want. Consult the current YTMDesktop2 documentation for the precise controls and URL.
- Add the overlay in OBS. In the scene, add a Browser Source and use the copied OBS URL. Set its size and position to fit your stream layout.
- Choose a layout and test it. Use compact text or a ticker when screen space is limited; check artwork, long titles, and missing artist information before leaving the stream unattended.
The YTMDesktop2 documentation describes a default local URL and says a paired client token must be included in the URL when authentication is enabled. If your URL contains a private token, do not post or share it; treat it like a credential.

Other metadata and overlay software
The OBS “What’s Now Playing” resource history describes MusicBrainz support and fallback, templates, artwork features, and handling for some metadata edge cases. It may be worth investigating if you need metadata enrichment or another overlay workflow, but an update-history page is not a complete current setup manual. Check the resource’s current compatibility and setup instructions before relying on it.
Make the label readable and verify the 24/7 setup
- Show at least the track title and artist when those fields are available. Choose a compact text layout or ticker if the video already contains important visuals.
- Test unusually long titles and tracks with incomplete tags. Confirm the displayed fallback is useful rather than a misleading filename or blank field.
- Check behavior at track changes and after restarting the player or OBS. The documented tools provide detection and display capabilities, but they do not establish long-duration uptime, timing, recovery, or reliability.
- Confirm that the exact playback application is the one the integration supports. A working overlay for VLC or YTMDesktop2 does not imply it can read another player.
Or let it run in the cloud
The overlay methods above require a playback and streaming setup that supplies track metadata. StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream; it does not go live from a camera and does not provide a now-playing metadata overlay. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
