Use FFmpeg’s drawtext video filter to put a title directly into the stream’s picture. For a title that changes as playback advances, have FFmpeg read a UTF-8 text file and reload it periodically while a separate helper updates that file. The overlay and the helper are separate: FFmpeg draws the text, but your playback source or script must determine what title is current.
This is different from setting a YouTube broadcast title or FFmpeg output metadata. Those change metadata fields; they do not, by themselves, draw text over the video.
Choose the title viewers should see
| Method | What it changes | What viewers see |
|---|---|---|
drawtext overlay |
Composites text into the video frames FFmpeg encodes. | Text visible inside the stream image, including on players that do not display the YouTube title field. |
| YouTube broadcast title | Changes the broadcast/video resource’s title metadata. The YouTube API distinguishes a liveStream, which carries transmitted content, from a liveBroadcast, which represents the event or video; the broadcast has a snippet.title field. See YouTube LiveBroadcasts resource. |
The platform’s title field, not text composited into frames. |
FFmpeg -metadata title=... |
Writes a title value as output metadata. See FFmpeg command-line documentation. | It does not itself render visible text in the video. |
Use drawtext when the name needs to appear over the video. You can set YouTube’s broadcast title separately if you also want to change the platform metadata, but changing that field does not alter pixels already being sent. The API documentation describes broadcast and stream resources separately; it does not establish a universal procedure for changing a title in every live-broadcast state. See YouTube LiveStreams update documentation.
Check that your FFmpeg build supports drawtext
Before building the command, check the FFmpeg installed on the machine that will stream:

Set up the dynamic overlay
The reliable general pattern has two processes: FFmpeg reads and renders a text file, while a separate player, playlist tool, or script supplies the current title. There is no universal title detector for every audio or video input; connect the updater to the metadata source available in your setup.

Create a UTF-8 text file containing the initial title, for example
Now playing: Example Track. Keep the file somewhere the FFmpeg process can read. -
Add a
drawtextfilter to the video filter graph. Its essential shape isdrawtext=fontfile=/path/to/font.ttf:textfile=/path/to/current-title.txt:reload=30. Replace both paths with real paths for your system. This is a filter shape, not a complete tested streaming command: integrate it into the filter graph and input/output options you already use, and verify the syntax against your installed FFmpeg version and build. -
Choose presentation options in the filter for legibility, such as text position, font size, font color, and an optional background box. The right size and placement depend on your video dimensions and what is already on screen; keep the title within the visible frame and avoid covering important game or video content.
-
Set
reloadto the frame interval at which FFmpeg should reread the file. For example,reload=30checks it every 30 frames. At 30 frames per second, that corresponds to about one second between checks; at other frame rates, the delay differs. A shorter interval can reduce title-change latency but checks more often. The title will not change until both the helper writes a new value and FFmpeg reaches a reload check.PerformancePC Slower Than It Used to Be?DriversOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You DownPerformanceWindows Errors? Run the helper that obtains the current title from your actual playback source and writes it to the text file. Test with a known title change before relying on it in a live stream.
FFmpeg documents the textfile and reload options, and recommends updating the file atomically to avoid partial reads or failures. See the drawtext filter reference.
Update the file atomically
Do not overwrite the active title file in place while FFmpeg may be reading it. Instead, have the updater write the complete new UTF-8 title to a temporary file in the same directory, then replace or rename that temporary file over the active file. The replacement should be atomic on the filesystem you use. This way FFmpeg is more likely to read either the previous complete title or the new complete title, rather than an incomplete intermediate value.
Handle special characters safely
Reading from textfile avoids much of the escaping complexity involved in embedding changing text directly in a filtergraph. Still, use UTF-8 and test the characters in your titles—particularly punctuation, backslashes, apostrophes, colons, and non-Latin text—with the font and FFmpeg build you will actually stream with. Quoting rules apply to both the shell command and FFmpeg’s filter syntax. Consult the filter documentation for escaping details rather than assuming that one quoting style works in every shell.

Connect the title source to the updater
The overlay filter only displays the string it reads; it does not discover the current song or video title. Your updater must get that string from the part of your setup that knows what is playing.
-
Local playlist: use the playlist player or scheduler’s current-item information, if it exposes it, and pass that title to the updater.
-
Media player: use a metadata interface provided by that specific player, if available. Confirm that it reports the active item rather than the next queued item or the filename alone.
-
External feed or custom scheduler: make the feed or scheduler the source of truth and update the file when its active item changes.

How to read the current item is specific to the player, playlist, or feed; the FFmpeg filter documentation does not define a common detector. Test transitions, missing metadata, and titles containing unusual characters. Decide what the updater should display when a title is unavailable, such as a fixed channel label, rather than leaving a misleading previous title on screen.
Test before going live
-
Run the FFmpeg command against a short local input or test stream and confirm the title is visible in the resulting picture.
-
Change the text file using the same updater method you will use during streaming. Confirm the overlay changes after the configured reload interval.
-
Test a long title, a blank or missing title, and representative punctuation or non-Latin characters. Adjust the font size, position, and box styling if the text clips or becomes hard to read.

Check the actual outgoing video, not just YouTube’s title field. The broadcast title and the in-frame overlay are independent.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
drawtext is reported as an unknown filter |
The installed FFmpeg build does not include the filter. | Check ffmpeg -filters; install or build an FFmpeg version with drawtext support, including the required FreeType dependency. |
| The title does not appear | The filter may not be attached to the video path, or a font or text-file path may be wrong or unreadable. | Check the filter graph, exact paths, file permissions, and FFmpeg’s error output. Test with a simple title before adding the updater. |
| The title appears but never changes | The helper may not be updating the file, FFmpeg may not be reloading it, or the helper may be reading stale metadata. | Check the file contents while streaming, confirm the configured reload interval, and verify that the title source reports the current item. |
| The title is garbled, truncated, or intermittently incomplete | Encoding, escaping, font coverage, or in-place writes may be at fault. | Use UTF-8, test the characters with the selected font, prefer textfile over embedding changing text, and replace the file atomically. |
| The YouTube title changes but the picture does not | You changed broadcast metadata, not the frames being encoded. | Use the drawtext overlay for visible in-frame text; treat the YouTube title as a separate metadata field. |
