Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use three layers: a playlist controller to choose and advance through videos, GStreamer to play each media URI, and Docker to restart the application if its process exits. Docker’s restart policy alone does not recover a GStreamer pipeline that errors while the application stays running. For a durable setup, build a small application around GStreamer’s API; use gst-launch-1.0 to prototype, not as the playlist manager.
How the playlist, player, and restart fit together
A YouTube playlist stream in this setup is not a single Docker or GStreamer feature. Each layer has a separate job:
- Playlist controller: obtains the playlist entries, orders them, and decides what to do when an entry ends or fails. yt-dlp can extract playlist entries, but traversal and playback still need orchestration.
- GStreamer: plays a resolvable media URI. Its
playbinelement supports URI playback, network buffering, and playback events. - Docker: restarts the container after its process exits according to the configured restart policy. It does not restart a pipeline inside a process that remains alive.
This separation matters: a playlist ending normally, a video failing to load, a GStreamer error, and an application crash are different events. Decide which layer handles each one before relying on an automatic restart.
Build a playlist controller around GStreamer
Enumerate and order playlist entries
Use yt-dlp or application code to enumerate the playlist and define the order. yt-dlp documents full playlist extraction as its default; --flat-playlist avoids extracting entry details, which may bypass downloading. Choose based on the metadata and media access your controller needs, and verify behavior against the yt-dlp version you deploy because extraction compatibility and available formats can change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not assume that piping a playlist directly into a player will provide sequential playlist playback. yt-dlp documents sending one selected video’s media to standard output with -o - and gives a VLC pipe example. That establishes a general player-pipe pattern, not a ready-made GStreamer playlist command. Your controller must explicitly resolve or obtain each playable URI and decide when to request the next entry.
Play each URI and watch the GStreamer bus
Pass an absolute media URI to playbin. Build the controller to observe GStreamer bus messages, including errors, end-of-stream, tags, and state changes. On end-of-stream, it can advance to the next entry. On an error, it should apply a deliberate policy rather than assuming Docker will notice.

For an application intended to run unattended, use a small program built with the GStreamer API. The gst-launch-1.0 reference describes that tool as primarily for debugging and says, “You should not build applications on top of it.” A launch command can help test whether a pipeline is viable, but it does not by itself supply playlist state, transition logic, or an error policy.
Choose what happens to a failed entry
Define the behavior in the controller, and log the event so an operator can tell whether playback advanced, retried, or stopped. For example, decide whether a transient error gets a retry, whether repeated failure skips to the next item, and whether an unrecoverable error exits the process so Docker can restart it. These are application decisions; Docker cannot make them for an individual pipeline that remains inside a live process.

Configure Docker to restart after process exit
Docker’s documentation describes a restart policy as controlling whether the daemon restarts a container after exit. Set the policy on the container or in its Compose service, and choose it according to how intentional stops should behave.
| Policy | When it fits | Behavior to account for |
|---|---|---|
on-failure[:max-retries] |
Restart after a non-zero application exit, optionally limiting retries. | It does not restart just because the Docker daemon restarts. |
always |
Restart after exit when the container should generally resume running. | It has special handling after a manual stop. |
unless-stopped |
Restart after exit while preserving an intentional stop. | A manual stop remains in effect across daemon restarts. |
no |
Do not restart automatically. | This is Docker’s default. |
For a stream intended to resume after an application crash or host daemon restart, select a policy whose behavior matches that goal. If an operator’s deliberate stop must remain in effect after a daemon restart, account for that distinction when choosing between always and unless-stopped. Pair the policy with application logging and health monitoring: an exit-based policy cannot detect a stuck or failed pipeline if the process never exits.

Test recovery by failure type
Validate the controller and container separately before treating the stream as unattended. The useful question is not only “does it restart?” but “which component sees this failure, and what does it do?”
- Playlist item reaches end-of-stream: the controller should move to the next entry, or apply the configured end-of-playlist behavior.
- GStreamer reports an error but the process remains alive: the controller should retry, skip, or exit according to its policy. Docker will not restart merely because the pipeline reported an error.
- Application exits non-zero: an
on-failurepolicy can restart it;alwaysandunless-stoppedalso restart after exit subject to their stop behavior. - Docker daemon restarts:
on-failuredoes not restart solely for this reason; choose and test the intended policy behavior. - Manual stop: check whether the chosen policy preserves that stop after a daemon restart, especially when choosing between
alwaysandunless-stopped.
Common failure causes and fixes
The container restarts, but the same playlist item fails again
A Docker restart begins the process again; it does not repair an unavailable or incompatible source URI. Log the failing entry and error, then decide whether the controller should retry after a delay, skip the item, or terminate. Avoid a tight crash loop by making retries and exit behavior intentional.

The container stays up, but playback has stopped
The application may still be alive after a GStreamer error or stalled pipeline. Docker’s restart policy reacts to process exit, not every playback problem. Have the application inspect bus events and take an explicit recovery action; add separate monitoring if you need to detect a process that is alive but no longer making progress.
The playlist does not advance
playbin plays a URI; it is not a managed playlist service. Ensure the controller handles end-of-stream events and selects the next entry. A pipe example for one selected video should not be mistaken for playlist sequencing.
Playlist extraction or media availability changes
yt-dlp extraction compatibility and available formats can change. Check the deployed version and its current format-selection and update options when a source stops resolving. Keep source-service terms and rights in view: technical extraction behavior does not grant permission to rebroadcast the material.
Run a YouTube playlist stream without maintaining the Docker stack
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than to develop and operate your own GStreamer application, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
