To show the song currently playing, add a now-playing overlay to the video output that goes to YouTube. In OBS, that usually means adding a Browser Source overlay or an integration that updates native text and image sources. The YouTube live video’s title is broadcast-level metadata; it does not automatically change on screen for each track.
Why the YouTube title does not show each song
A YouTube live broadcast has metadata such as a title and description, but that describes the live video as a whole. Google for Developers explains that “a liveBroadcast resource corresponds to exactly one YouTube video resource.” Changing the broadcast title is therefore not the same as placing changing text over the video. Keep the YouTube title descriptive of the continuous stream; use an overlay for the current track.
YouTube’s “Music in this video” section is not a reliable substitute for live on-screen song text. YouTube Help says the section appears on some videos, and automatic additions are associated with particular cases such as Content ID claims or Audio Library music.
Choose an overlay that can read your music player
First identify where the stream’s audio is playing. Then select an overlay documented to read that specific player. Support varies by tool and setup; the options below are documented examples, not a guarantee that every player, operating system, or OBS version is compatible. Check each project’s current instructions before relying on it for a continuous stream.

Browser Source overlay
The OBS Forums resource Music on stream describes a web-based current-song overlay and lists YouTube and YouTube Music among supported services. Its listing describes theme and CSS customization and hiding the display when music is paused; it reports a last update of September 18, 2025. Verify its current installation steps and player support before use.
YTMDesktop2 documents a local-API-powered OBS browser overlay. Its workflow is to enable the local API, configure an overlay, copy the generated URL, and add an OBS Browser Source with that URL. Documented layouts include full, compact, and text-only. Follow the current YTMDesktop2 instructions for API and authentication settings: YTMDesktop2 documentation.

Native OBS text and image sources
A public GitHub project describes a Python bridge that reads current YouTube Music information and updates native OBS text and image sources, avoiding a Browser Source or plugin dependency. This is specific to that project; it does not establish that every YouTube playback setup exposes compatible metadata. Review its instructions, platform requirements, and maintenance status before adopting it: GitHub project.
Set up and verify the now-playing display in OBS
- Identify the music source. Note the actual player supplying the audio, such as YouTube Music. Do not assume an overlay that supports one service can read another.
- Choose a matching integration. Use a documented Browser Source overlay or a native text/image integration that supports your player. Complete any local API, authentication, or bridge setup required by that tool.
- Add it to the live scene. In OBS, add the overlay as a Browser Source using its generated URL, or add the native sources created by the integration. Place the overlay above the video or background in the scene’s source order.
- Make the text readable. Position it where it does not obscure important visuals. Preview long titles and artist names, and adjust width, wrapping, size, or styling where the overlay allows it.
- Check updates in the outgoing scene. In the OBS preview, confirm that the title and artist appear and change when the track changes. If the source offers pause behavior, check what viewers see when playback pauses.
- Keep broadcast metadata separate. Set a clear YouTube live title and description for the overall continuous stream; use the overlay, not broadcast metadata, for per-track display.
Troubleshoot missing or stale song information
- The overlay is blank: Confirm that the player is supported, the required local API or bridge is running, and the overlay URL or source configuration is current.
- The overlay appears in OBS but viewers cannot see it: Check that it is in the scene being streamed, positioned above the background/video, and not hidden or covered by another source.
- The song appears but does not update: Verify that the integration reads the player actually supplying the stream audio, then check its current documentation for API or authentication requirements.
- Long titles are cut off: Increase the available text area or adjust the overlay’s styling and layout. Preview the result rather than assuming every overlay handles long text the same way.
- The display remains during a pause: Check whether the selected overlay documents pause handling and configure it if available. The OBS Forums listing for Music on stream describes hiding the display when music is paused.
- Compatibility changes after an update: Check the overlay or bridge project’s current release notes and supported versions. Compatibility across all player, OS, and OBS combinations has not been established.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the 24/7 stream is built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo can keep that YouTube stream running without a computer or home connection staying on: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams uploaded video rather than a live camera feed.
