Yes—the WD_BLACK D30 Game Drive for Xbox has been opened and its internal SSD removed, but shucking is a destructive, unofficial modification. A June 2022 AnandTech forum teardown found an unlabeled WD Blue SN550E in one unit. That does not establish the hardware inside every capacity, production run, regional SKU, or edition. Opening the case can damage the SSD or USB bridge and void the retail warranty. Keep the D30 intact if your priority is Xbox storage; shuck it only when the possible value of a bare NVMe drive outweighs those risks.
What shucking the D30 means
Shucking means opening the external enclosure, removing the SSD and USB interface, and reusing the extracted drive in a compatible PC, NAS, test system, or NVMe enclosure. It is not an official WD service procedure.
There are two different goals:
- Recover the SSD: You accept that the shell, USB bridge, or part of the internal PCB may be sacrificed.
- Preserve the enclosure: You try to remove the SSD without damaging the D30’s housing or electronics. Sticky adhesive makes this considerably harder.
The Xbox model is part of a broader D30 family. SanDisk lists 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB Xbox versions, but internal components can vary. The procedure below is based on one documented teardown, so inspect your own unit before applying force.
The complete product uses USB-C and SuperSpeed USB 10 Gb/s, with an advertised maximum of 900 MB/s under the manufacturer’s test conditions. It is designed for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S storage. (SanDisk product specifications)

Before opening: backup, test and accept the trade-off
Back up everything
Copy important files or games elsewhere before opening the drive. WD places responsibility for backups on the user, and a failed disassembly can make the data inaccessible. (WD warranty policy)
Verify that the D30 works
- Connect it to the Xbox or a computer with the original cable.
- Confirm that the expected capacity appears and that files can be read.
- Run any read/write test only after the backup is complete.
- Photograph the label, serial number, capacity, screw locations and cable.
Do not initialize or format the disk during later testing until you have confirmed that no required data remains.
Understand the warranty consequence
WD support documentation says removing a drive from its casing voids the warranty, and its warranty terms exclude certain alterations to external covers. The D30 retail listing specifies a three-year limited warranty, but opening the enclosure can eliminate that protection. (WD support article)
Tools and workspace
- Torx driver set (the teardown used Torx screws on the outer shell)
- Phillips driver
- Nylon spudger or plastic opening pick
- Small container for screws
- Bright lighting; magnification is useful
- ESD-safe mat or wrist strap, recommended
- Fine-tip tweezers, optional
Do not use a kitchen knife or metal screwdriver as the primary prying tool. A slip can gouge the case, short exposed electronics, or hit the SSD, connector or surface-mount components.

1. Remove the four outer Torx screws
On the side carrying the product printing, remove the four Torx screws. Keep them separate from the internal screws; photograph their locations if necessary.

2. Release the black cover
Find the notch where the white plastic base meets the black outer cover. Insert a nylon spudger at that notch and work around the seam to release the cover’s clips. Use slow pressure rather than twisting the tool deeply into the enclosure.
3. Remove the three internal Phillips screws
With the cover off, remove the three Phillips screws exposed inside. Store them separately so they are not confused with the Torx fasteners.
4. Lift the internal assembly by the green PCB
Support the assembly near the green circuit board and lift it from the housing. Avoid pulling on the USB-C connector, cable socket or any small components.

5. Separate the SSD from the PCB interface
The documented unit used very sticky adhesive between the SSD and PCB. Support the SSD close to the bonded area and apply slow, even pressure. Do not lever against NAND packages, the controller, the M.2 edge connector or tiny components. Stop immediately if the module begins to flex.
6. Treat PCB breakage as a last-resort destructive option
The original forum poster reported breaking off a long, narrow PCB section to improve access. That is not a required step and should not be your default method: flexing the board can destroy the USB bridge, connector or SSD. If the adhesive will not release without dangerous force, sacrificing the enclosure is safer than bending the drive.
Once separated, retain the shell, stand, screws, cable and PCB. They may help with troubleshooting, identification or a future return attempt, although warranty coverage may already be lost.

Identify the extracted SSD
One June 2022 teardown identified its module as an unlabeled WD Blue SN550E. Treat that as a sample-specific observation, not a guaranteed D30 specification. Do not assume your drive is a retail WD Blue SN550, SN550E, SN570, SN750 or any other named model until the hardware reports it.

- Capacity reported by the operating system
- Exact model string and firmware revision
- Serial number, if exposed
- M.2 length, keying and connector type
- Whether components are present on the reverse side
- Whether it is recognized in a standard PCIe NVMe slot or USB enclosure
Physical length, clearance, keying, controller behavior and firmware determine enclosure compatibility. An extracted board is not guaranteed to fit or operate in every M.2 enclosure.
Test the drive after removal
Windows graphical checks
- Install the SSD in a compatible PCIe NVMe M.2 slot or NVMe USB enclosure.
- Open Disk Management and check whether the drive appears.
- Use a health-monitoring utility to inspect model, temperature, power-on hours and available SMART/NVMe health data.
- Initialize and format it only after verifying that no needed data remains.
Some OEM firmware exposes incomplete SMART information, especially through USB bridges.

Linux checks
lsblk
sudo nvme list
sudo smartctl -a /dev/nvme0The device path may differ. The smartctl command requires the smartmontools package, and OEM drives may return only partial health data.
If the extracted SSD is not detected
- Power down and reseat the module.
- Confirm that the M.2 socket supports PCIe NVMe, not SATA-only M.2 devices.
- Try another compatible slot or enclosure.
- Check BIOS/UEFI, Device Manager, Disk Management or
nvme list. - Inspect the edge connector and board for adhesive residue, lifted components or cracks.
- If it works through the original D30 PCB but not directly in an M.2 slot, suspect physical, electrical, OEM-firmware or interface compatibility.
- Do not repeatedly power-cycle a visibly damaged board.
- If the data is important, stop testing and use a professional recovery service.
WD says it does not repair drives or recommend board replacement, and repair work can void warranty coverage. (WD repair guidance)
Xbox use after shucking
Keeping the D30 intact
As a complete USB drive, the D30 can play and store Xbox One games and archive Xbox Series X|S games. Series X|S games archived on external USB storage must be moved back to the console before they can be played. (Xbox product page; D30 data sheet)
Using the bare module
Removing the SSD does not turn it into an Xbox Series X|S expansion card. A bare NVMe drive generally cannot be inserted into the console’s expansion slot and expected to authenticate as an official expansion product. Shuck for PC, NAS or compatible-enclosure reuse—not as a guaranteed Xbox internal-storage upgrade.
Speed and thermal expectations
The complete D30 is rated at up to 900 MB/s over USB 10 Gb/s. That is an optimized, internally tested maximum, not a guaranteed result for every host, workload or capacity. A bare drive may behave differently because USB overhead is removed, PCIe generation changes, cooling differs, and OEM firmware may impose power or temperature limits. Do not assume a specific benchmark improvement.

Does shucking save money?
The only documented price comparison is historical: the 2022 teardown reported a $50 purchase and estimated about $90 retail value for a comparable WD Blue drive at that time. Those figures are not a 2026 valuation. Calculate the current deal using live prices at publication:
Effective bare-drive cost = D30 purchase price + job-specific tools + replacement enclosure + shipping and tax.

There is no dependable current street-price comparison established here, so check the D30, equivalent bare SSD and enclosure prices before buying.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every D30 contains an SN550E or the same NAND and controller.
- Breaking the narrow PCB before trying a supported, careful adhesive release.
- Skipping the backup and pre-disassembly functional test.
- Formatting the disk before confirming that all required data is safe.
- Assuming any M.2 enclosure supports the extracted board.
- Expecting the bare drive to function as an Xbox Series expansion card.
- Updating firmware or attempting board repair after damage; WD’s support material warns against firmware updates for portable/external drives and says casing removal voids warranty support. (WD support information)
Verdict
The WD_BLACK D30 Xbox drive is reported to be shuckable, but the evidence is one documented teardown rather than a universal service design. Proceed only with a complete backup, proper plastic tools and acceptance that the enclosure, USB bridge, SSD or warranty may be lost. For Xbox storage, portability or resale, leave the D30 intact. For a heavily discounted drive destined for a compatible PC or enclosure, shucking can make sense—but identify and test your specific module instead of buying on the assumption that it contains a particular WD model.
