The quickest supported way to copy a user-accessible file from BlueStacks 5 to Windows 10 or 11 is System apps → Media Manager → select the file → Export to Windows. To move a file in the opposite direction, use Import From Windows or drag it into BlueStacks. These tools handle photos, videos, recordings, music, downloads and many documents; they are not a universal way to extract protected app data or an entire game installation.
This guide applies to BlueStacks 5 on Windows. BlueStacks 4 has separate legacy instructions, and BlueStacks Air is a Mac product.
Export a file from BlueStacks to Windows
- Start the BlueStacks 5 instance that contains the file.
- On the home screen, open System apps, then Media Manager.
- Choose Gallery for images and videos, App Media for media associated with an app, or Explore for broader file browsing.
- Press and hold the file (or left-click it) to select it.
- Choose Export to Windows.
- In the Windows folder picker, select a destination and choose Select Folder (or the equivalent confirmation button).
- Open that Windows folder and verify the filename and extension.
BlueStacks exports a copy; the original remains in the emulator until you delete it separately. The destination is the folder you selected, not necessarily the BlueStacks installation directory. The control names can vary slightly by build or language. See BlueStacks’ current instructions at Media Manager on BlueStacks 5.
Import files from Windows into BlueStacks
Use Import From Windows
- Open System apps → Media Manager.
- Select Import From Windows.
- Browse to the file on the PC, select it and click Open.
- Look in Imported Files or the relevant Media Manager view.
Documents, PDFs and ZIP files may be easier to find in Explore than in Gallery.

Drag and drop
- Open the Windows folder containing the file.
- Open Media Manager (or an app that accepts dropped files).
- Drag the file from Windows into the BlueStacks window and wait for the import notification.
- For the documented media workflow, open Media Manager → Gallery → SharedFolder.
Dragging a file into an app can make it available for that app’s immediate operation, but it does not guarantee placement in the directory another app expects. BlueStacks describes this workflow in its drag-and-drop media guide.
Finding the Windows shared folder
For a default installation, the user-data area is commonly C:ProgramDataBlueStacks_nxt, with a shared folder commonly at:

A custom installation may use a different root, for example D:BlueStacks_nxtEngineUserDataSharedFolder. These are installation-dependent examples, not guaranteed paths. In File Explorer:
- Paste the default path into the address bar.
- If it is missing, check the custom BlueStacks location or the location chosen when the existing installation was moved.
- Use the folder for copying files; do not rename, move or delete unrelated engine files.
BlueStacks documents custom locations at its custom-installation guide and explains moved-installation paths at its existing-installation guide. Media Manager is safer than guessing internal paths.
When an Android app cannot see the file
An imported file can remain in Imported Files or SharedFolder while the target app scans a different location. Work through this sequence:

- Open System apps → Media Manager and locate the file in Imported Files, Gallery, SharedFolder or Explore.
- Use Media Manager’s copy or move command if the build offers one.
- If necessary, install a reputable Android file manager inside the same BlueStacks instance and copy the file to a user-accessible directory such as
Download,PicturesorMovies, or to the app’s documented import folder. - Reopen the target app and use its own Import, Open or Upload control.
- Check the extension, format support and Android storage permission. Restarting the app can refresh media indexing.
Modern Android storage rules can block Android/data, Android/obb and app-private directories. A third-party file manager is only a possible workaround, not a guaranteed bypass; user reports describe protected folders that remain inaccessible (example report).
What can and cannot be transferred
| Item | Practical approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Photos, videos, screenshots and recordings | Media Manager, then Export to Windows | Gallery or App Media is the easiest view. |
| Music, PDFs and downloads | Explore, Import From Windows or a file manager | They may not appear in Gallery. |
| ZIP or archive | Import/export as a file; extract on Windows | The receiving app must support the archive. |
| APK | Copy the APK if you can locate it | An APK does not include logins, saves, settings or downloaded assets. |
| Game saves and app data | Use account sync or the app’s backup; consider an instance backup | Private folders may be inaccessible and saves can be account-bound. |
Android/data, Android/obb and protected data |
Only attempt with an app-supported method | Access depends on Android version, permissions and the BlueStacks build. |
Large batches and folders
Media Manager is clearly documented for individual files. Some builds allow multi-select, but whole-folder export is not a dependable universal feature. For a large collection, transfer smaller batches or create a ZIP inside BlueStacks when practical, export the archive, and extract it in Windows. Reports describe slow transfers and crashes with very large batches (user report), so keep free space available and avoid closing BlueStacks during an active operation.

To preserve a whole BlueStacks instance, use Settings → User data → Create a backup → Start, documented for BlueStacks 5.10 and newer. BlueStacks notes version caveats when restoring older backups, so treat this as an instance backup rather than a substitute for exporting a photo or document.
Troubleshooting checklist
“Export to Windows” is missing
- Select an individual file, not a folder, and try Explore or the file’s three-dot/context menu.
- Confirm you are using BlueStacks 5 on Windows rather than BlueStacks Air or a legacy BlueStacks 4 page.
- If the item is not treated as media, use an Android file manager to copy it to a user-accessible location first.
The exported file is not on the PC
- Check the destination chosen in the Windows picker and search Windows for the filename.
- Turn on file-name extensions in File Explorer to confirm the expected extension.
- Check that you exported from the intended BlueStacks instance.
The shared-folder path does not exist
- BlueStacks may have been installed or moved to a custom location.
- The folder may not have been populated yet; import a test file and use Media Manager to locate it.
- Do not infer the path from another Android instance.
The transfer is slow or stops
- Use smaller batches or an archive.
- Ensure adequate free disk space on Windows and in the emulator.
- Avoid running several heavy apps during transfer and do not close BlueStacks mid-export.
Windows and BlueStacks prerequisites
The Hyper-V configuration requirements cover Windows 10 version 1903 or later and Windows 11, an Intel or AMD processor, at least 4 GB RAM, 5 GB free storage, administrator access and current graphics drivers; Hyper-V and the Hyper-V Administrators group may also be required. These are requirements for running BlueStacks, not special file-transfer requirements. BlueStacks 5.20 and newer can run with Hyper-V enabled or disabled when configured appropriately. Do not disable Hyper-V merely because an export failed; check Media Manager, paths, permissions and the target app first. See BlueStacks’ Hyper-V requirements.
Multiple Android instances (including Nougat 64-bit, Android 11 and Android 13 where offered) do not necessarily share identical storage. Always open Media Manager in the instance where the file was imported. Available versions depend on the current installer; see BlueStacks’ installation documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy files directly from Windows File Explorer?
You can use the documented shared-folder location for local copying, but the path changes with custom installations. Media Manager is the supported way to identify and export files, and internal virtual-disk files should not be edited manually.
Can I transfer a complete folder?
Folder handling varies by build and is less reliable than file export. Transfer smaller batches or use a ZIP archive, then extract it on Windows.
Does exporting an APK back up my game?
No. The APK is only the installer. Progress, settings, downloaded assets and account state require cloud sync, an app-specific backup or an appropriate BlueStacks instance backup.
Will this work without Google Drive?
Yes. Media Manager’s Import From Windows, Export to Windows and drag-and-drop workflows transfer files locally without a cloud-storage service.

Is BlueStacks 4 the same?
No. BlueStacks 4 has separate legacy instructions. Use the BlueStacks 5 Media Manager workflow for current Windows 10 and 11 installations.
