If you mean watching a YouTube playlist, use its player controls where available; if you control an embedded player, YouTube’s IFrame Player API provides a documented shuffle method. If you mean broadcasting a shuffled sequence of videos as a YouTube Live stream, playlist shuffle alone does not configure the live broadcast.
First, decide what you mean by a “YouTube Live playlist”
The phrase can refer to two different things:
- Watching a playlist that includes live-stream videos: shuffle affects the playback order of videos in the playlist.
- Broadcasting a sequence of videos as a live stream: shuffle would have to be handled by the player or streaming workflow producing the broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings control the outgoing stream’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and latency—not the order of playlist items.
Use shuffle to randomize order. Use loop to repeat a playlist; looping and shuffling are distinct. YouTube Help documents playlist looping on desktop, mobile, TV, and gaming consoles, but the current shuffle-control location is not established across every device.
How do I shuffle videos in a YouTube playlist?
Use the YouTube player interface
Open the playlist and look for a shuffle control in the player or playlist controls on your device. YouTube’s current playlist Help guidance covers creating, saving, and reordering playlists, but does not give a cross-device walkthrough for the shuffle button. Its location and availability can therefore vary by interface; avoid relying on a single set of clicks for desktop, mobile, TV, or console.
Manage the playlist order separately
On desktop, YouTube Help describes saving videos to a playlist and dragging playlist items to reorder them. Reordering sets a deliberate sequence; it is not the same as shuffle, which randomizes playback order.

Control shuffle in an embedded player
If you are building an embedded YouTube player, the IFrame Player API documents setShuffle(true). If shuffle is enabled after playback has begun, the current video continues and the next selection comes from the reordered playlist. The setting does not persist when a different playlist is loaded, so enable it again after changing playlists.
Can I shuffle a YouTube Live playlist?
If you are a viewer watching a playlist containing live-stream videos, playlist shuffle concerns which playlist item plays next; it does not change a live stream’s encoding. If you are broadcasting prerecorded videos as a single YouTube Live stream, the encoder sends one continuous stream. The order in which clips appear in that broadcast must be arranged by the playback or streaming system feeding the encoder; YouTube’s 4K and frame-rate settings do not randomize those clips.

For a scheduled or ongoing live broadcast, plan the sequence before going live and verify the outgoing program in the live control room. Do not assume that shuffling a YouTube playlist viewed in a browser will automatically shuffle the content being sent as a separate live broadcast.
Set up 4K at 60fps separately
4K/2160p means 3840 × 2160 pixels. YouTube’s current English Live encoder guidance recommends 35 Mbps for H.264 at 4K/2160p 60fps. For AV1 or H.265, it lists 10 Mbps minimum and 40 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or encoder will sustain the stream.

- Set the encoder output to 3840 × 2160 at 60 frames per second if the source, encoder, and upload connection can support it.
- Choose the matching codec and bitrate guidance above; leave enough headroom in upload capacity for a stable broadcast.
- Configure the stream key in the encoder or streaming service, and keep it private. The key connects the encoder output to your YouTube broadcast; it does not control playlist order.
- Check the preview and stream health before sharing the live link. A successful shuffle setting does not confirm that the broadcast is arriving at 4K60.
YouTube says 4K/2160 streams use normal latency; low latency is unavailable at that resolution. YouTube’s feature table also distinguishes horizontal and vertical live formats: its 4K bitrate streaming feature is listed for horizontal live streams and is unavailable for vertical live feeds on the YouTube app. These broadcast-format limits do not affect playlist shuffle.
Will YouTube archive a 4K 60fps live stream?
YouTube says 1440p and 2160p streams are automatically archived, and streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, keep a local backup rather than depending on the archive.

Troubleshooting
- The current video does not change when I turn on shuffle: that is expected when shuffle is enabled mid-playback through the IFrame Player API. The current item continues; the next selection uses the reordered playlist.
- Shuffle stops after I load another playlist: API shuffle does not persist across a different playlist load. Enable it again for the new playlist.
- I cannot find a shuffle button: the available YouTube Help playlist instructions do not document one universal location across devices. Check the controls for your current player or use an embedded player with the IFrame Player API.
- The broadcast is not 4K60: check encoder output resolution and frame rate, codec, bitrate, and YouTube stream health. Shuffle changes playback order, not stream quality.
- The live broadcast is vertical: YouTube lists 4K bitrate streaming as unavailable for vertical live feeds on the YouTube app. Use a supported horizontal format if 4K streaming is required.
- The stream ended but no complete archive appeared: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording for long broadcasts.
